Not sure what the expectation could be in just 1 year.  First off there is zero chance he gets let go after 1 year.  But also there is a reason Roy stepped aside after last year, take a look at the last 2 years he coached at UNC.  Not much going on.  And recruiting was not off the charts.  It is clear his energy and commitment were waning.

Maybe Hubert Davis flames out after a few years but the idea that he was going to come in and be a top 5 team just because it is North Carolina when the roster and recent talent level clearly indicated otherwise is not fair.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2019%E2%80%9320_NCAA_Division_I_men%27s_basketball_season]2019–20https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2019%E2%80%9320_North_Carolina_Tar_Heels_men%27s_basketball_team]North Carolina14–196–14T–13thTournament canceled due to COVID-19https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2020%E2%80%9321_NCAA_Division_I_men%27s_basketball_season]2020–21https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2020%E2%80%9321_North_Carolina_Tar_Heels_men%27s_basketball_team]North Carolina18–1110–6T–5thhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2021_NCAA_Division_I_Men%27s_Basketball_Tournament]NCAA Division I Round of 64

Does Hubert Davis get a second year at UNC?

You're probably right, but if he does it's only because the ACC is truly awful and he has enough games against bad teams to survive.  But he is not exactly lighting it up, and it isnt because he has no players.

I agree - but IMO he has enough talent on that roster to be in second place in the ACC, and instead he's getting blown out by the likes of Wake Forest.  Not awesome for Hubert.  And I don't think UNC is going to have a ton of patience if he winds up .500 in a terrible conference this year and doesn't get a lot better next year.

Maybe they'll make a late run, though.

I get your point, but re Wake, Steve Forbes is an extremely good recruiter and fine HC. He also was very successful in Junior College play. I suspect he will make Wake highly competitive in short order. His record;

Also a lot of teams are losing to Wake that at the beginning of the season no one saw coming.

I don't think you can judge a coach in his first year on a handful of losses that you did not see coming initially but in the context of the current season is not so strange.

My son goes to Wake - Forbes was an excellent hire and he is way ahead of schedule there, no doubt about it.

UNC still shouldn't be losing by 20 to Wake with the roster they have.

I just don't see UNC having a quick trigger on Hubert Davis. He has a long and storied history there and was heavily recommended by Williams.  I could be wrong, but see him getting at least 3 years and likely 4 to show he can recruit and win consistently. He does have 2 top 50 kids in the 2022 class and the #10 ranked kid in the 2023 class.

I get it so you are going to fire a coach because he lost a game by a margin that doesn't fit the overall talent level on the floor that night?

If you did that a lot of coaches would lose their job.

Rutgers with a potential NCAA bid hanging in the balance last year went to Lincoln Nebraska and lost to Nebraska by 21, a Nebraska team on its way to a 7-20 season.  A game at one point they trailed by more than 30.

That same Rutgers team beat a Tom Izzo coached Michigan St team by THIRTY, 67-37, earlier that year.  Should Tom Izzo ever lose a game by 30 let alone to Rutgers?

And Wake is GOOD this year as opposed to Nebraska or even a mediocre Mich St team from last year.

North Carolina is 13-6 and 5-3 and 11-0 at home this year.  That's not awful.  I am just not sure what more you can expect other than maybe losing a game by a larger margin then maybe they normally would.  But you wouldn't fire a first year coach because of that...

Here is Rob Dauster, Goodie and Gottlieb talking about UNC and Syracuse.

Start at the 26 minute mark and they discuss the issues with UNC and whether Jimmy should quit.

Our old friend Bobby Hurley soon to be 6 / 12 on the season.
barring a miraculous turnaround I don’t see him there after this season. Boy did we dodge a bad expensive bullet and really came out ahead.

Gonzaga at San Diego tonight, espn 2, 9:00 eastern time. Chance to check out Marcellus Earlington. San Diego has a nice 5,000 capacity campus arena.

Great 3 OT game between Arizona State and UCLA, and great win for Hurley and the Wildcats against one of the top teams in the country.

We should never put the words “great win” and “Hurley” in the same sentence.

Also, since I am not a snake charmer, I will invariably never trust a Hurley who coaches college basketball.

North Carolina is now 0-7 in Quad 1 games and has been outscored by 130 points in this games (h/t Braziller, I didn't check that myself).

OTOH Wake now has an NET of 38 so they may prevent what should otherwise happen which is #OneBidACC

I admit I despise the ACC for obvious reasons.  Meanwhile my kid at Wake has retained his SJU hoops loyalty which gets him points for loyalty but not so much for wise sports decision-making skills.
