Around College Basketball

Obviously this season's record is not helping his cause but the Dino Gaudio extortion case and his failure to disclose the situation to Louisville leading to his suspension combined with how last year ended and how this year is going certainly has put the final nail in his coffin.  If he was 15-5 this year maybe he survives the "scandal."

Did I miss Mack doing something gross, or they just aren't happy with his record?

Apparently Pearl really wants the Louisville job, which I guess says a lot because he has Auburn at No. 1 in most of the rankings I've seen.

This Louisville team completely quit on Mack over the past couple months. They've lost 5 of their last 6 and haven't been competitive in any of those games. His postgame comments didn't inspire confidence either. Still think that's quite the quick hook on an established coach in year 4 with a $12M buyout.

Of course Pearl's camp is leaking that he "wants" the job. He wants to squeeze as much $ out of Auburn as possible while his stock has never been higher.

Willard is not sexy enough for Louisville.

Willard a strong possibility for "Ville ??

Was an assistant there during Rick Pitino's tenure

Mack to Maryland or Georgetown (if they make a move) ????

I was thinking all the Power 5+BE openings that could occur after this year:

Maryland, Louisville, Georgia, South Carolina, Missouri, Kansas St, Arizona St, Washington, Butler, Georgetown  Does Jim Boeheim step aside after this year thus creating an opening at Cuse?  I don't necessarily expect all those programs to dismiss their coaches,

And of course the inevitable carousel in which coaches leave their current jobs for another job (maybe Willard or Pearl) thus creating an opening.

Man Syracuse lost to Pitt tonight 64-53.  I mean Jimmy is not getting fired but man how much longer especially with his two boys presumably leaving after this year?

Denny Crum was the epitome of sexy!

Getting off the coaching carousel discussion for a moment, I was struck by how few fouls were called in the Clemson v. Duke game; netiher team was close to being in the bonus at the end of a tight game.  Much different philosphy I guess in the ACC than in the BE

Man you think it gets bad around here when SJU loses.

Check Syracuse twitter and other social media.  Jimmy is a legend by all accounts, that entire program is basically his sweat and blood and they want him OUT.  Like NOW.  Like urging people to boycott the game at the Dome on Saturday.

That job is interesting since Mike Hopkins who would have been the likely successor might not make it past this year at UW.

There is also the NCAA’s amended violation charges against Louisville which now includes actions under Mack’s regime and mentions him by name.  Add all of that together with losing the team and the Guardio situation and you have the perfect storm.

But but...some on this board swear up and down that we have by far the worst fanbase in college sports. What to believe... /media/kunena/emoticons/unsure.png

I bet on Cuse tonight. I think Boeheim should have been fired about midway through the 2nd half.

Boeheim made Syracuse seem like a great job, but is it really? I'm interested in seeing who goes there once he finally hangs it up.

Don't know if it will be Hopkins given the weak results at Washington but all the previous rumors were that Syracuse would keep things in the family whether it be Hopkins, Adrian Autry or a few others.

Will be interesting...45 years or so is a long run

Louisville apparently tolerates tolerates but losing.

If I were at UW and my seat weren't hot, there's no way in hell I leave for Syracuse. I liked it up there, and this is from a guy who hates Seattle.

I'd give Autry first public crack at it to be honest . . . but I'd first secretly call Pitino or Marshall. It's not like they've never had an embarrassing scandal up there.

Losing to Pitt sure gets internet trolls riled up, doesn't it?

Some UCONN trolls were calling for Danny'sDanny'a few weeks ago and they didn't even lose to Pitt.

Re Chris Mack: immoral of story: don't fire an assistant when you run a dirty program.

Good friend of mine huge Cuse fan texted me if I thought Pitino would take the SU job for a few years to get the program straight again.  Maybe groom someone on the bench.  Says Jim has to go.

It's interesting as a SJU fan when I discuss college BB with my best friend, who is a SU grad and diehard BB fan. He still thinks of the SU program as a surefire top dog - the idea is at some point JB will move on and then they will rocket back to the Top Ten. I think it's more complicated than the coach. As with Pitt and BC I don't see how being in the ACC benefits the BB program other than monetarily. Not that the money doesn't drive the boat - it does - just that there is a cost on the court to it.

I'm sure they are still big in NY from Binghamton and further north but here in the Metro area they are now totally forgotten. And my son lives in Raleigh now - nobody in ACC country cares about the games against Syracuse. And the geography they picked effects recruiting. After the Seton Hall game Saturday coaches from both schools went straight to a Hudson Catholic game. Not so easy to do that if you played at Clemson or Wake that day.

When you look at the SU roster it is striking, as it is mostly three-star kids. Maybe it's all because of a 77-year-old coach, but I don't think it's that simple. When JB finally goes we will find out.
