Around College Basketball

Not gonna go over big with the "a win is a win" crowd. Second in nation in free throw attempts for a team without great talent translates to great coaching.

I watched much of last night’s Iona/ Manhattan game on TV.

it is interesting that with all of the talk of CMA’s uptempo “40 minutes of hell” it sure seems that Pitino’s team plays a more uptempo pressing style on defense..

Iona is a well coached team with limited talent.  If Iona played StJohn’s at this point in the season IMO Iona would likely win despite its more limited talent.

Iona plays with a more controlled style and confidence of play on both offense and defense than StJohn’s.   Iona will play in the NCAAs again this season.  No surprise.

Say what you want about Slick Rick, but his attention to detail and pushing his teams to constantly improve is something;

Per Jaden Daly

Rick Pitino: “I’m not happy with the team, not pleased at all…but my expectations are very high. You look at the record and you see, what are we, 13-3? I look at how you’re playing. I’ll take 10-5 if we’re playing great, executing. I don’t think we’re playing great.”

Rick Pitino: “I’m 69, I could literally shoot blindfolded better than them. I go to camps, I could shoot seven out of ten closing my eyes. It’s not difficult, it really isn’t, so I’m bothered by it. I really am.”

Pitino has coached this way forever. When he arrived at Providence, he pressed and pushed the ball and took it hard to the basket. Part of the strategy was to get into opponent's 2nd five, where the talent level evened out. It took them all the way to the final 4.

When the 3 point shot was implemented, he went to the court, measured off 19'9", and drained shot after shot. Afterwards exclaimed, "This is too easy. We're going to shoot a ton of 3's".

Like Bonds, was an all time great without having to cheat. It's sad in a way.

In a game today Dayton was called for a total of only 6 fouls and Duquesne for a total of only 8 fouls.  Those are totals for the entire game.

With the passing of Joe B Hall, former coach at Kentucky, his last game was in the NCAA’s in Denver at the West Regionals vs St John’s, 86-70. As soon as the game was over, he walked to mid court and announced his retirement in front of a throng of reporters. Even the NY reporters there were tipped off right before and hardly interviewed Louie and the team as it was huge and shocking news.

Joe B. Hall suffered the way Lavin did at UCLA.  Anything less than a national championship there and fans weren't satisfied.  Even after winning one, their fans thought he should have won more.

It's really difficult to gauge someone's success when they win more than most coaches but at a very high profile school that dominated college basketball at points in their history prior to his arrival.

I see SJU’s favorite ref James Breeding is doing the Baylor-WVA game tonight…good at least he can’t mess up any Big East games tonight.

Miami Hurricanes are a heck of a basketball team this year.  Our old friend Charlie Moore is there.  They will be a popular sleeper pick to make a nice tourney run in march.

“A recommendation from the oversight committee to allow teams to use redshirts for 4 games this season has been denied by the Division 1 Council, source told @Stadium.

Completely baffling decision since COVID still affecting teams in terms of health and availability”.

Jeff Goodman

I'm kind of amazed that last year's ACC champ, Georgia Tech, and Pac10 champ and elite 8, Oregon state, are strglling and below .500 this year.  Shows how hard it is stay relevant year in and year out.

Watching the Rutgers and Iowa and it is some ugly basketball.  Competitive but man ugly 44-43 Rutgers with 3 minutes left.

Man I just saw maybe the worst call this year.  46-46 in the Iowa/Rutgers game and Ron Harper Jr was 30 feet from the basket dribbling with 2 seconds left and they called basically a small hand check on Iowa.  Giving Harper 2 free throws.

And I mean if you look at the replay there was nothing.  Robbie Hummel B10 Network was like, "I just don't see how you blow the whistle there." I mean I can't believe Fran McCaffery didn't lose it after that.
