Around College Basketball

If every team gets in, what's the point in watching the regular season?

Who cares if we get a #12 seed (#50 overall) vs a #17 seed (#70 overall) when the seeds go up to #87 (~348 teams)? Typically that'd be the difference of being on the NCAA bubble vs the NIT bubble. but with this proposal the season is greatly diminished. Also, who wants to fill out brackets with that many teams?

The conference tournaments ARE this because every team (besides a few who don't qualify) has a chance for a bid the week before Selection Sunday. Who would want to watch Nova vs Mississippi Valley St round 1 when we could get a proper Big East Tournament instead followed by a proper NCAA Tournament?

Your comment reminds me of a funny story. A few winters ago, I went to a golf clinic in South Florida, run by LPGA Hall of Famers Meg Mallon and Beth Daniel. During a Q & A, someone asked Beth where she played college golf. She went to Furman University, a religious school in South Carolina. Their nickname was the Christian Knights, so when she went to the football games, the student body would chant "F.U.C.K'. The administration promptly changed the nickname to the Paladins.
One of my favorite basketball memories is of the late Bobby Williams (who led the NYC basketball HoF for decades) in 1963 when NYU played the Paladins in the old MSG . There was a rebound between two Furman players (one may have been all Southern Conference Gerry Glur) and from between them up came this unstoppable force called Bobby Williams to take it away. I think the ball then moved from Williams to Kramer to Hairston for a dunk.
. I will ask for forgiveness before my post because I dislike having a good post ruined by facts . Furman University here in SC mascot name is the Paladins . It was the Christian Knights until 1963 when it was changed for the reasons mentioned . But , Meg Mallon , a great Women’s Golfer would not have been at Furman until the 8o’s or so . Thus , never having to hear F.U. C.K at a football game or otherwise . Another one about Mascots here in SCarolina is the Univ of SCarolina Gamecocks There is a lot of School Merchandise , Hats , Shirts , Etc with just this : Go Cocks embroidered . Just saying . Everyone smiles though .
Toured U of SC with my daughter when she was in high school, Definitely funny to see the word "Cocks" displayed so prominently all over the place.

I had a poster in my room during my latter college years and a few years after of a U of SC cheerleader with "'Go Cocks" on the back of her shorts.

Source: The ACC will propose that ever single team in Division 1 will make the 2021 NCAA Tournament.

Seems a reach considering the times and imo devalues the Dance
I also think in Covid times it might be impossible to stage, BUT I think it would be fun to have an "open" tournament, a True National Tournament. It could create a truly interesting Cinderella Story. This is the way they have an annual soccer tournament in the UK called the FA Cup and every now and then Cinderella wins it. 2013 was incredible as Wigan came on the beat Man City in the FA finals. They could set up the tournament being played among schools in one (or a few states) at 32 locations with a final 32 going to a single location for the final games

I have to agree. Just leave it asd is.

Dan Gavitt to @TheAndyKatz: “At this time we are not working on any contingency plan that involves expanding the tournament field.” ACC’s proposal not happening.

Something is definitely wrong here. How can you be the PAC 12 Commissioner, making a good salary, and take a 1.9 million dollar interest free loan. On top of that, you get a 2.5 million dollar bonus, while furloughing and laying people off. You can't make this shit up.

How can anyone blame young athletes for saying they deserve a piece of the pie. Without the kids there are no sports and exorbitant salaries. This shows that those on top don't care about the athletes, no way in hell can you justify taking this type of bonus while putting people out of work.

The reality is collegiate sports is a big business built on the backs of young men and women who don't receive any monetary compensation.

Before e get into they are getting a free education, I would like to point something out. When I first went to college in 1965, student athletes went home for the summer, got jobs, got internships, and enjoyed summer vacation the same as the rest of the student body. This is no longer the case, college football and basketball are 12 months a year. They are no longer student/athletes, they are athletes who go to class in order to maintain their eligibility. They are not being prepared to deal with life after they stop playing.

If you want to call them student/athletes, then give them the summer off to work or do internships which will prepare them for the real world once their playing days are over.

I have long favored giving the so called student athletes walking around money (a/k/ a "W.A.M") equal to the amount that they would make if they worked 20 hours in a part time job which their practice/ training obligations prevent them from having. So for example if a student could work part time at the nearby McDonal;d's restaurant at $14 per hour then pay him/ her $280 per week as a stipend.

The fact is that many of the so called student athletes come from poor families and lack WAM and have no ability to pick up money to purchase a slice of pizza, yet everyone from the grey haired AAU coaches, conference personnel. school administrators, coaches, and other on up are getting greased in one form or another.

As expected, Pac-12 announced resumption of football, basketball & winter sports seasons

The NCAA has released testing guidelines for college basketball.

“The guidelines suggest testing three times per week on non-consecutive days throughout the season, including for officials.”
