Around College Basketball

We recruited Elijah Gertrude out of high school. Top 50 recruit from NJ. Out of the year with a ACL injury and would medical redshirt.

Don't see how they could enroll for the first semester but I imagine they would be eligible once the semester ends to play over the holidays and in the 2nd semester.
I believe it. Which would still be a first.

Still he had already dealt with the portal for this year. Seems awful odd to retire now (meaning right before the season starts). I hope it isn't a health issue. Maybe he's trying to preserve this redshirt?
Maybe his heart isn’t in it anymore. Some folks know when to say when. Possible had been thinking about it in the back of his mind but thought he could go on. It could be as the grind went on this fall he might of just woke up and said “I don’t want to do this anymore” and retired. If your heart isn’t in it anymore, it will reflect in the job you do and people will pick up on it. So instead of doing a disservice to his team and himself he thought it would be best if he left now.

Of course I could be dead wrong on one or both the reasoning for and the timing of the move. As stated by others I hope it is not health related and me personally, I also hope he wasn’t forced out due to some unknown potential scandal.

BTW-UVA beat Louisville in 2016. Pitino's press conference was great. He praised Bennett and UVA for their defensive brilliance.

But notice how he criticized his team. He literally goes thru the entire roster and says that his team is not a good defensive team because of "lack of experience and physical weakness..." Notice something similar. "Physical weakness..." And nobody said boo. Two days later they beat number 1 UNC.

Go to 3:30 and then watch...

This series of quotes from the UVA president say it all (from Athletic)
When people like Tony Bennett exit men’s basketball, exit our industry for something that has nothing to do with coaching or teaching or being a role model, then shame on all of us,” Williams said about the position college sports finds itself in.

“I remain hopeful that we will have congressional intervention. I remain hopeful that we will find a way to preserve college athletics, which there’s nothing else like it in the world. And it has earned the right to continue. There will have to be change and we are a part of that change. But as it stands at the moment, there are no real rules or guidelines that create structure and so the people that follow the rules are the ones that are hurt the most.”

BS move to retire with 3 weeks until season.
Unfair to players
Unfair to fans and boosters

I understand the game has changed but now there are literally no rules. For schools, for players and now coaches.
That is obviously a super fair point. I think Bennett just realized he was FAR from all in for the season and bailed; personally agree with you that he should have manned up and coached the year out.
