Around College Basketball

Our season has been so disappointing that I haven't been following Top 25 too closely beyond Big East. Was shocked to see Florida Atlantic at #21 with a 20-1 record.

Billy Packer was instrumental in beating one of SJU greatest teams ever in the 1961 ncaas. SJU had a roster that included Tony Jackson, Leroy Ellis and Kevin Loughery but fell to a Wake Forest team at MSG.

Grew up listening to Billy Packer first with Brent then with Nantz

RIP...
I'm about to date myself as I can recall Packer with Dick Enberg and Al Mcguire on NBC before Packer headed over to CBS. He initially started out with Gary Bender on CBS.

I can also remember Packer was an analyst with Jim Thacker on local/regional (Jefferson Pilot) ACC basketball telecasts in the late 70's and early 80's.

RIP

There is actually a not too nice story about him and the SJU/Duke game at Cameron in February 2000 the one where SJU won 83-82. Which was for a long time the last non conference loss for Duke at Cameron.

Perhaps someone else heard it but he berated an arena official who wouldn't allow him in because he did not have his credentials. Evidently it was a bit ugly. I remember there were a number of reports about it.

Back in the day I had great seats in Section 3 row 1st row (1 leg on one side of half court, the 2nd leg on the other)…routinely spoke to the announcers…we had the Doctors of Dunk at Alumni Hall and were down 17 in 1st half.. . Billy Packer turned around to us and kiddingly said “you guys are kind of quiet now”. Fast forward, David Russel had big 2nd half and got us back in game - but fell short. One of many high profile, nationally televised games at Alumni Hall - when we were a “conteda”.

That Louisville game was a great show. SJU had a very good team but Louisville had a great team. Reggie Carter went head to head against their guard whose name I can’t recall.
He could jump thru the roof and could also shoot from outside. One of the five best visiting players to play at CA although I can’t remember his name. A tremendous college ball player.

Darrell Griffith along with e McCray brothers (from Mt. Vernon), Wiley Brown (1 hand) and other great players

Darrell Griffith. Was at that game, big sign welcomed the audience to Loooieville.

Darrell Griffith. Thank you. Reggie Carter was a very good defensive player but Griffith was so talented. There was a lot of talent on the floor that day. That Louisville team may have been the best visiting team to ever play at CA.
