Around College Basketball

Darrell Griffith. Thank you. Reggie Carter was a very good defensive player but Griffith was so talented. There was a lot of talent on the floor that day. That Louisville team may have been the best visiting team to ever play at CA.
If I recall correctly, the very next week we lost a game to Syracuse at Alumni Hall on botched block / charge call. It was a block called against Reggie Carter on basket by Louis Orr. Louie C was screaming for the charge call. I believe Packer, Enberg and McGuire did that game also.

There is actually a not too nice story about him and the SJU/Duke game at Cameron in February 2000 the one where SJU won 83-82. Which was for a long time the last non conference loss for Duke at Cameron.

Perhaps someone else heard it but he berated an arena official who wouldn't allow him in because he did not have his credentials. Evidently it was a bit ugly. I remember there were a number of reports about it.

Since you brought it up:

A pair of Duke students reported the perpetually grumpy CBS broadcaster made sexist remarks to them when he checked into Cameron Indoor Stadium to work a Duke-St. John’s game in February 2000. When Packer was asked to show his press pass at the band and media entrance, he reportedly responded, “You need to get a life. Since when do we let women control who gets into a men's basketball game? Why don't you go find a women's game to let people into?" The commentator ultimately apologized to the students in a brief email: "I am sorry you were offended by my comments as I entered Cameron on Feb. 26,” Packer wrote. "It was never my intention to disparage Duke University or its students.

Darrell Griffith along with e McCray brothers (from Mt. Vernon), Wiley Brown (1 hand) and other great players
Wiley Brown was missing a thumb. If I recall correctly he had a big game.

Regional game, I believe it was Marv and Bucky Waters.

That's it. I knew I did not remember it exactly right

Dr. Dunkenstein was his nickname. That guy could fly. That game was a spectacle at Alumni

I was at the game when Kansas with Walt Wesley beat us at Alumni. Don't remember if Jojo White was on that team.

Yes Jono was. I got to chat with Wesley some time ago in Fort Myers Fl where he ran a kids rec program, really nice guy.

our old friend Porter Moser got a good win today to raise his teams record to 11/9. Scary to think that we went hard for this guy. Gives me little confidence in the next coaching search whenever it may be.

Actually at least 4 of their losses are to ranked teams by 4 points or less and they play in the best conference in the country. They just beat the second ranked team in the country by like 30 points. I’d take Moser over CMA any day. Record now 12-9 with a legit schedule not like our cupcake city schedule.

RMN,
I was a proponent of hiring Moser who I continue to think is an excellent coach. As bamafan says, he went from Loyola of Chicago to the best conference in the country and is doing ok. Hindsight is always 20/20 but no doubt in my mind we would have been better off if he'd taken the job.

Just listened to hour long interview of Fran Frashilla on Twitter posted by Dave. Fran called Moser a great coach and stated he knows that he himself was not a great coach but he has the ability to recognize a great coach and he doesn’t often give out that accolade. Talked about CMA too said thought it would work out but doesn’t have an answer for St John’s.

Believe Brown may have been missing a finger or two but don't remember him having only one hand.
The night before I believe the 1979 Championship game, he took off the fake thumb during dinner and it wound up getting thrown in the trash. They had to rummage through several cans before finding it.

My dad used to freak when I did that with my retainer at school. Can't imagine the hell I would have caught if I lost a thumb.

It's unreal to me to see that long time powerhouse Louisville is 2-19. They have to be in the running for worst record ever for a power conference team.
