Around College Basketball

He's on my list, but not sure we have the patience to give him the time he needs.
What’s wrong with giving someone who is a strong besketball coach a chance and surrounding him with good recruiters. It seems we already have the good recruiters in place.

Good job by Jose Alvarado to take his opportunity in the NBA, and run with it. He will likely never been more than a role player, but he's two years in and played 100 games so far. Remember when we thought he might transfer to St. John's?

In any case, if Alvarado can make it, it just makes it even that much more frustrating that Ponds hasn't made it. I'm not going to list them out, but we all know the issues with Ponds. It just would have been nice to see one of our recent stars make it.

Another team we beat during our bad out of conference schedule that was not supposed to be much, Temple, Just took down number one Houston 56 to 55. Crazy year in NCAA basketball. Tons of crazy upsets.

Temple appears to be the ultimate "play to the caliber of our opponent" type team.

I, for one , don’t know the issues you refer to regarding Ponds . And , if they are personal ones , they shouldn’t be disclosed . But , if it has to do with his playing skills and not playing in the NBA, then it’s fair game . Many , many very good BE players never get drafted by the NBA because the league has certain criteria for every position . I recall that while Shamorie was listed at 6’2” that he was really 5’10 or 11. Plus , he had a slight frame to go with it . Not the prototypical NBA PG or SG . I agree it would be nice to see more of our Players in the NBA but, even Champ wasn’t drafted last year . And , without those guaranteed contracts that 1st and 2nd rounders get , the others are relegated to those 10 day deals . Which make it difficult to secure a long term Roster spot . Note to NC Johnnie, sorry but , as you know , I’m a unabashed Ponds fan., Nothing wrong with that .

Saying its frustrating that Ponds hasn't made it because Alvarado did doesn't make sense. Shamorie was a small guard who played no defense what so ever. Jose Alvardo not only can score, but was and IS an ELITE defender. "He will likely never be more than a role play" is already working out for him quite well

"Alvarado, who was previously on a two-way deal, signed a four-year contract worth $6.5 million on Monday. He will reportedly have $3.4 million guaranteed over the next two years after emerging as a key player for the Pelicans recently."

Shamorie Ponds was told by NBA scouts and execs what to work on and never improved enough on those things. He made the decision to persue the professional ranks and I'll never tell a kid "they should go back to school" - if they feel like they have a chance go get your dream. He got his cup of coffee in the league because he could score and shoot it well, but his scoring couldn't/doesn't make up for his glaring deficiencies.

His path could very well be an incredibly lucrative overseas career, nothing wrong with that. Surprised he hasn't gone that route yet (I know he's had some injuries)

I did a web search trying to find where Shamorie is playing this year. I know Clark & Simon are playing overseas and Heron & Figgy are currently playing in the G League. Ponds played for Delaware in the G League all of last year (same team Julian is with) but is not listed as a G League player this year nor can I find any reference to him signing to play overseas. Does anyone know where he is playing or perhaps he is injured and sitting out?

He is not currently playing. He was let go from the Delaware Bluecoats a while back after suffering an injury

That's why it's in the Around College Basketball thread. Doesn't pertain to SJU. PS what would his ranking be if his name was James Bowman? Even with the added cache he's ranked outside the top 30 in the 247 consensus rankings. Not saying he's not good, just that he can trade on his name as well. I bet he goes to USC to stay in Hollywood, he doesn't need Penny's money.

Ok. Maybe I should have been more clear in my post. Ponds never seemed interested or committed to conditioning or working on his areas that needed improvement. Alvarado is the opposite. And to me that's frustrating, because we can't enjoy the success of our guy in the league.
