Around College Basketball

Disclaimer: This post is, in no way, insinuating St. John's should hire Richard Pitino (JR).

I watched tonight's game between San Jose State and New Mexico. This was an all-access game and I am quickly learning that these broadcasts can make or break public perception of the participating coaches.

My observation was that Pitino filled every minute of every timeout with strategic planning and detailed feedback for his players. It was no "rah-rah", just all basketball instruction. Tim Miles (formerly of Nebraska), on the other hand, did not do so well for himself tonight. It has nothing to do with the outcome of the game, he just had very little to offer his team during play or in timeouts. I was surprised to see a veteran coach speechless and seemingly flustered.

I've had the impression for a while now that most coaches are more like Miles with regard to huddle/in-game coaching and adjustments.

I remember being really bitter at the time when I read that Rick Majerus had more than 200 plays just for inbounding the ball.

Was watching game tonight where team had one second on shot clock inbounding the ball-wound up with a lay up. Don't think I've seen a St. John's coach in the 50 years of following the program that could accomplish that result.

It’s not the Coach , it’s the time keeper . Who is always a home team designee.

I could be misremembering but didn’t Greg Williams make a layup for us on a inbound pass to send a game into overtime a couple of years back? It might have been against Georgetown and I remember being ecstatic that we were going to overtime and that someone was actually able to draw that play up.

He may have but it had to have been by "accident" ;) :) :ROFLMAO:

This is how I am guessing it will play out for St Johns:

1. SJU finishes the year on a hot streak and we enter the bubble conversation
2. Mike A gets off the hot seat OR.... maybe prevents himself from being on the hot seat at all
3. SJU loses a close game in the BET and misses the tournament
4. Georgetown has Ewing step down, hires Pitino
5. As Pitino brings GTown back to relevance, we are left with one of the biggest what ifs in our program history

Thanks for reminding me that Coach Lapchick's last game was more than 55 years ago.

For all of you wanting to play Iona and to a lesser extent Fordham, the first two sentences says it all and explains why that match up rarely occurs now.
Sounds like someone who is giving a very politically savvy response just in case one of the coaching jobs from the schools in the quote opens up.

Hint: It isn’t Manhattan College and Pitino already has a job in the other one.
