Around College Basketball 2019/20 Season

I can't see any bubble for college, but If they did bubble, wouldn't they need to do it for all sports?

I believe that sports should be canceled until there is a vaccine that allows for the safety of all involved. No one has any idea what the effect of trying to play college sports will be. It is not worth risking the health and well being of your youth for entertainment purposes.

It may mean no sports for a year, but I would rather that than to see college athletes get sick from this virus. Let them have a year to just focus on Academics while a solution to this problem is found.

Let's be realistic, does anyone actually think that college athletes will not be emotionally affected by playing during this time. Will they really be able to concentrate on playing and give their best effort?

There are just too many unknown factors to justify having college sports at this time.
I agree Panther. Just wondering if CBB was 'different' and could function safely in a 'bubble' environment.
How would the bubble work? Say games are every Friday, Saturday & Sunday's. Say if it's held in NYC. You got schools from Nebraska, Chicago, Indiana and Wisconsin that would have to travel a good distance while other school would have to travel very short to msg. I doubt schools would stay in the bubble during the week and take online courses.
I could see 2 options: One would be do like the nhl and have a east and west bubble, and maybe have the teams travel 3 times a year to play the other teams.
Only other option that I could see is having one bubble midway between the east coast and Nebraska.

I’m sure there are hotels that would be more than willing to negotiate big group rate longer stay discount

If teams are traveling that ain't no bubble. LOL Would all have to stay close and take courses virtually.

Sources: Big Ten presidents and chancellors scheduled to speak tonight to discuss the future of the season. Sentiment from the call yesterday indicated there was momentum at the presidential level to cancel fall sports. Unclear when a decision will come.

Fwiw, I feel the same way about public schools reopening in September. As the parent of two daughters who are middle schools teachers and grandfather of four wonderful youngsters who will be attending kindergarten, third grade and sixth grade next month, I am very concerned about their health and safety. While I agree that there is no substitute for learning in person as well as the strong need for children to have social interaction with their peers, their health and safety are far more important to me. I lost a very close friend (for almost 50 years) to complications from COVID last week. That puts things into perspective for me. Safety first!!!
I feel the same way. Our granddaughter, who lives with us, starts high school in September. I am worried about how safe in person learning will be and am also worried about how she would adjust to a new environment with only virtual learning.

The next few months are going to be very challenging for parents and children. I have already decided that I will drop her off and pick her up from school so that she will not have to take Public transportation. I am hoping tht her school makes wearing masks mandatory.

We are supposed to get an email tomorrow stating what the school procedures will be.
From what I've been hearing, most high schools are going with some version of a hybrid model, a combination of in school and at home learning. Some schools are doing alternate days in school, some have a Monday & Tuesday or Thursday & Friday in school with schools closed on Wednesday for deep cleaning. I've also heard of a high school where the kids are split in half and students will go to school for an entire week and then do an entire week online.

Most school districts are surveying parents to determine how many kids will need bus transportation. That's a big headache for school administrators. Obviously, they are hoping that lots of parents will opt to drive their kids to and from school.

Well, the Big East would not go it alone and be the only conference playing hoops. So, it'll be key to see what the Big Ten decides.
If 'any' season can proceed 'safe', I was noodling about an east / west bubble format OR one Bubble for ALL teams in say, Cleveland or 'somewhere' in Ohio.
Again whatever is better and safer for the kids and coaches, but this may prove moot.
We shall see.

Wow! Hard to believe all the sju fans on this board are against playing basketball....I really feel bad for the kids and students and what they will be missing if things dont go back to some sort of normalcy...very sad and I believe selfish...sorry but that's what I think....I love this board for all the info and I love sju basketball...very sad...

I don't think anybody is against playing basketball. I've been a diehard St John's basketball fan for 55 years. Nobody wants to see St John's play this season more than I do. But, we look at things realistically, see the handwriting on the wall and believe that it probably won't happen. Today, there's a strong rumor on ESPN.com that the Power 5 commissioners are on the verge of deciding that college football will not be played this fall. If that's the case, it certainly puts a damper on the prospects for college basketball this season.

I, too, feel badly for the players, the student body and the fans. But the health and safety of everyone is more important than anything else. Take it from someone who just lost one of his best friends for almost 50 years to COVID last week.

I think this is a huge over reaction and they most def should play. I think they will iron it out over the next few days and will end up playing college football this year. College hoops is a def go. I dont think that is even being debated.

They said similiar things about baseball and its going on just fine.

I don't see how indoor, smaller arena basketball gets played if outdoor, massive stadium football is getting postponed. Not unless a whole lot of people change their attitudes regarding the pandemic in the next two months. Unfortunately, millions are people are way too stupid to do that.

I am proud of SJU and Big East for planning on playing. I think this is what is right for our society...and I think this is best for the health and safety of our society...Go SJU!

It would be near impossible for 1 college football/basketball player to die from COVID even if they get it. It's dangerous to the elderly and weak. Major D1 athletes are in the prime of their lives. Let the kids play. We can't hide in caves frightened because of what if. I suspect we look back at this year in 20 years in shock over the extreme measures that were taken. If you fall in one of the truly at-risk categories, stay home hunker down, let your family help you get things so you don't need to go out in public, and everyone should social distance and wear a mask if indoors without being able to distance. It's silly IMO to wear a mask while in your car alone or on a ferry on the top level with the wind howling. That's just the pure fear from the media without any scientific basis.

Hope you're right but I have serious doubts that we will see college football and hoops

Sports are important, but In the big picture sacrificing sports for a semester or even a season is not going to have a huge impact on these kids lives. Kids get hurt, have academic issues, etc all the time and are forced to sit out a season, and do just fine afterwards. With youth comes resilience. Besides, this is less for the young then it is for the elderly they come in contact with. With a vaccine seemingly on the horizon, why not wait till the end of the calendar year and reevaluate then? It could save many lives. As Panther said, let them focus on their studies. There's plenty of time for sports down the road.

Hey,then let coach and staff put all their efforts now into more save recruiting and bring in some great recruits

"Words of Wisdom" , Monte. Let's deal with the Virus first, then everything else will fall into place. Looking forward to having lunch or dinner with you when it is safe.

Here's Dan's open to @dpshow: Here’s the information I got almost an hour ago. The Big 10 and the PAC-12 will cancel their football seasons tomorrow, the ACC and the Big 12 are on the fence, the SEC is trying to get a delay to have teams join them.

Do you know what would be really impressive if there were no sports this year. Imagine if Alumni who were in the position to do so, offered Virtual Internships to the student athletes at their schools. This would allow many athletes a remarkable experience.

College basketball and football are essentially year round sports. When you are not playing, your are training and working out. This leaves very little time for these student athletes to get acquainted with the world of work. Only a small percentage go on to play professions sports.

Are colleges really preparing the young men and women for life after the games are over?
