Around College Basketball 2019/20 Season

Of all the athletes in nba, mlb, soccer etc that are testing positive, are any of them actually sick? All I hear are reports of guys testing positive, but I never hear an update on how any of these guys are doing. Are they all in the hospital on a ventilator? are they having minor flu like symptoms? are they not sick at all?

To me this is important. If 90% of these guys are testing positive but have 0 symptoms, or they have flu like
symptoms for a week or so, then play the season as is. If guys are dying or are seriously ill and being hospitalized, then cancel the season.
It's not just the players, it is who they interact with, coaches, trainers, parents and others. Similarly with kids going back to school. Can't believe we have to repeat this again, again and again.
Ok, so throw in the trainers and coaches as well. Are they very sick, mildly sick, not sick at all etc?

If the majority of people are not getting very sick, then play the season and of course take precaution with any high risk people you are interacting w/ outside of basketball like all of us are doing now.

But if these players, trainers, coaches are consistantly being hospitalized or dying, shut it down.

But still I would like to hear if anyone knows how sick these positive tested players are getting. Lets use the Marlins. they have like 20 players test positive. how sick are these players? are they sick at all?
I guess you missed the “spread” class

Sounds like a plan. Let's wait until some of the legendary coaches in their 70's who are high risk die from the disease before shutting it down.

You just don’t get it and it doesn’t seem like you will

There is always Zoom coaching. It may be that there will be a mass migration of sports fans to twitch and then Amazon will take over yet another industry.

I feel like you are one of those people throwing tantrums in Wal-Mart or peeing on the floor in Verizon stores when asked to wear a mask.

Why did i think anyone here could discuss this maturely? Thats absolutely my fault.

It is painfully obvious that you are not capable of having an informed discussion on the subject. But maybe the peeing on the floor comment was a bit much. The mask one was probably right on target.

And the clock seems to be ticking on the power 5 confferences doing the same:

Not cancelling-postponing until spring if possible was the announcement.

E-Sports will take over

Yeah that is the hope. But that is a Hail Mary. That assumes we have a vaccine or a huge reduction in cases. Plus you are going to run college football simultaneously alongside CBB? Logistically that will be tough. Think of TV on the weekends. I just don't see it. They are just kicking the can down the road.

So much money at stake that they need to explore all options before they say no.

I may be sipping the syrup, but CBB may be the exception in major college sports for the '20 - '21 season since it seems plausible that a 'bubble atmosphere' and near-by housing facilities 'might' gain approval among at least some major conferences.
Particularly in those parts of the country--like the NY Metro Area--where the virus 'seems' finally under control.
I'm not addressing 'quality-of-life' issues for the student-athletes--which are additional parameters conferences will have to wrestle with, but that imo the sport is conducive to space-sized resolutions.

I believe that sports should be canceled until there is a vaccine that allows for the safety of all involved. No one has any idea what the effect of trying to play college sports will be. It is not worth risking the health and well being of your youth for entertainment purposes.

It may mean no sports for a year, but I would rather that than to see college athletes get sick from this virus. Let them have a year to just focus on Academics while a solution to this problem is found.

Let's be realistic, does anyone actually think that college athletes will not be emotionally affected by playing during this time. Will they really be able to concentrate on playing and give their best effort?

There are just too many unknown factors to justify having college sports at this time.

Fwiw, I feel the same way about public schools reopening in September. As the parent of two daughters who are middle schools teachers and grandfather of four wonderful youngsters who will be attending kindergarten, third grade and sixth grade next month, I am very concerned about their health and safety. While I agree that there is no substitute for learning in person as well as the strong need for children to have social interaction with their peers, their health and safety are far more important to me. I lost a very close friend (for almost 50 years) to complications from COVID last week. That puts things into perspective for me. Safety first!!!

I agree Panther. Just wondering if CBB was 'different' and could function safely in a 'bubble' environment.

I feel the same way. Our granddaughter, who lives with us, starts high school in September. I am worried about how safe in person learning will be and am also worried about how she would adjust to a new environment with only virtual learning.

The next few months are going to be very challenging for parents and children. I have already decided that I will drop her off and pick her up from school so that she will not have to take Public transportation. I am hoping tht her school makes wearing masks mandatory.

We are supposed to get an email tomorrow stating what the school procedures will be.

Possibly, but you have to remember that the NBA does not have all of its teams in the bubble. With college basketball, each conference would need its own bubble. Not sure how feasible that would be. Power 5 and the Big East may have the finances to do it, but what about the smaller conferences.

Finding bubbles for every conference would be a logistical nightmare. What happens to a team like Gonzaga, they are a Pre season top 10, but the rest of their conference is not that highly rated.
