Around College Basketball 2019/20 Season
Iowa's Luka Garza will withdraw from the 2020 NBA Draft and return to school next season
The B10 is going to be stacked. Again assuming we have a season they will be the deepest conference in the country.

Iowa Coach Fran McCaffrey:

"I am certain there will be a college basketball season and an NCAA tournament"

I'm not certain of that but certainly hope he's right!!

As Curly would say, "Why soitenly!".

High school, but per Samad Hines;

Huntington Prep (WV), a powerhouse program who has produced multiple elite prospects, will NOT be playing this high school season due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the safety of their players. They should be back for the 2020-2021 high school season @HuntingtonPrep.

They are not playing in 20-21, will resume next year 21-22. This is a power program which plays a national schedule with lots of travel, so difficult and risky to pull that off. Will be interesting to see what LuHi does as their program is similar.

I would imagine that LuHi is surrounded more by good competition than Huntington Prep is, though. LuHi can just fill schedule with tri-state schools and cut down on travel beyond that.

Won't be because of me. I do however suspect a few posters of refusing to wear masks and socially distance, so I'm blaming them.

I agree completely with you and Moose and a totally irresponsible comment by McAffrey. You all saw the stance football players in the PAC 12 are taking today. Would not shock me to see the same in bball. Like it or not the virus is rising everywhere throughout North America with schools currently shut down. I am afraid to think what will occur in a month when schools open up and as we have seen everywhere teenagers and young adults are the age group that is currently spreading the virus the most as they refuse to wear masks and social distance.

From the article:

"A tournament without a basketball-centric power from outside the football oligarch — no Gonzaga, no Butler, no Connecticut, no Memphis?"

Here's the type of stuff that pisses me off and the article loses credibility. How do you mention those schools including two Big East Schools in that sentence without mentioning Villanova who has won two national titles since 2016?

Yes there are some big decisions coming up and I suspect eventually the Big 5 will break away from the NCAA (maybe sooner than I thought)

SJU 85, do you think the Power 5 will walk away from this?

NCAA extends tournament deal with CBS, Turner through 2032 for $8.8 billion. The men's NCAA basketball tournament will remain on CBS and Turner through 2032 thanks to an eight-year, $8.8 billion extension announced Tuesday.

I think they break away for football only.

It would render us mid major if they break off in hoops too. On one hand I can't see them leaving us out including UConn, Nova, G'Town, etc. But on the other, their greed is way more important than tradition to them. If this happens for hoops too SJU will cease to exist.

have no idea how it could work, but perhaps there could be room for some type of "independents"

Good news for many of the Big East schools is that they are top BB schools and/or in major metropolitan areas

I've predicted for years that the Power 5 would try to get to 16 teams per conference, each with two 8-team divisions. That's 80 schools that would account for perhaps 90% of the revenue in college sports. And that at that point they would leave the NCAA and its onerous rules in order to make up their own rules and keep 100% of the money.

I've been pleasantly surprised that it has not occurred yet. There seems to be enough of a tie to the club of academia to prevent them from taking what would seem to be a logical (if somewhat ruthless) business step. And perhaps they assess that there is enough value in letting non-Power-5 schools participate to maintain a profile that permeates everywhere and creates a patina of inclusiveness.

But if it happens I would think it happens in football first, that's where the lion's share of the money is. If it happens there, then basketball probably won't be far behind.

Problems for another day, though

The only thing I will put out there is, the magic of March Madness doesn't quite exist without the mid majors being included. So if the Power 5 were to break away from the NCAA in basketball, whatever tournament they decide to have at the end would really be lacking compared to the current structure. Not sure how that would all work out.
