Alumni Game / Midnight Madness

I was hoping to read about how the players looked in the scrimmage rather than a discussion about the lyrics of the entertainer , who is responsible for scheduling these people ? What kind of conversations take place regarding the demeanor of entertainors at an event such as this ?

It's disappointing to hear that last night's entertainer was vulgar and offensive to "the old guard," of which I am one. But the ears of most college-age kids aren't offended by this type of performance. Disappointing, but .......

I remember when I was a student at SJU in the early '70s, there was an appearance by Don Imus with Geraldo (Jerry) Rivera. He was doing some of his shtick in a crowded assembly room, when someone told him that his comments were being broadcast throughout the building. He replied that his routine may be "causing the nuns to be jumping out the f'....g windows." Not a BB related store, but just a comment on what is or isn't acceptable in a college setting.

I do wish there was a place to escape to, to avoid the political squabbling that is everywhere.

Let's go Johnnies!

I thought what occurred last night was inappropriate, disappointing and embarrassing for the university.

That said, as I have mentioned several times on this board, the irony of Trump supporters crying about inappropriateness is beyond laughable.

So you cant understand the concept of supporting the President but not condoning some of his words and actions? They are not mutually exclusive.

we all know that thug is just another way to Call someone a "N----R".

So when Donald Trump said "“Racism is evil, and those who cause violence in its name are criminals and thugs, including the KKK, neo-Nazis, white supremacists and other hate groups” he was calling the Grand High Exalted Mystic Ruler of the Ku Klux Klan a "N----R"?

And Atlantic Magazine in this article was calling Hiilary Clinton a sensitive "N----R"?

the-sensitive-thug/5422/

This race relations relations stuff is pretty complicated, no wonder we can't all just get along.

I will always respect the office of the President of the United States, which is why I have a problem with last night's event. I realize this may be exactly your point.

Overall, I do find it funny (ironic) when people who voted for Trump weigh in on appropriateness.

Vulgar behavior is inappropriate--whether directed at Trump, or by Trump and/or his 'base' or by whomever. And, to me, a sad commentary of our time.

I just want to know if we got any commitments last night. And I don't mean from Ted Nugent or Kid Rock--I mean from recruits!
Kidding.

I didn't ask you about whether you respect the office of the president, although I'm glad to hear that you do. I asked if you can see how someone can support the president but not condone some of his words and actions. I don't like a lot of the stuff Trump says. I didn't like what East said(and did) last night. Not comparing the two. Trump is Pres and East is some rapper that I never knew existed before last night. However voting for Trump doesn't preclude me from finding what he(Trump) or anyone else says inappropriate. Notwithstanding the fact that you find it funny.

Was there any National Anthem controversy last night?

I agree that is disgusting and inappropriate behavior. But are we surprised? Our society and culture has been descending into the vulgar for generations, becoming more coarse, more strident, and more shallow.
Right or Left. Believer or atheist. White or black. 'Educated' or ignorant. Rich or poor. See it for what it is.
Our country is living through a slippery slope of what is right and appropriate and classy versus what is wrong, disgusting, and vulgar since the 1960s--when the youth culture forgot what constituted civil and constitutional protest and morphed into storefront hippie themes comfortably held mantras that were hollow and shallow and collapsed.
The late / great Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan captured this phenomena with his 'defining deviancy down' concept.
We continue to live through it.
I will say a few things: 1) It was wrong to do that vulgar display--counter with ideas, not social dystopia; 2) But also totally unsurprising--and even expected--given what the country has become and where it is we find ourselves. 3) I must say Donald Trump is the poster boy for bad taste on numerous fronts and the master of dystopic behavior--but there is the right way to protest and the wrong way--and giving the finger and howling is wrong and gross. 4) How many of us would have reacted with this umbrage and outrage if the students had been holding the Middle Finger up and howling at Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama?
I pray as many who today are spewing vitriol in disgust--rightfully so--at the students' behavior last night.

Valid points CD, but people need to stop using Trump as an excuse for abhorrent behavior. If my kids acted inappropriately and tried to use anyone else(even the President) as an excuse for doing so, they'd get a good whack upside their head. I don't think it would have been to much for the administration to make it part of the their contract with the performers that there be no vulgarity, no political statements, etc. Aside from all else, we are still a Catholic School and there were also children in attendance. What ever happened to "good clean fun"??????

Catholic University? You are a disgrace. Common sense tells me that you don't invite rappers to this event. Did the brainless administration expect to hear classical music? And what about the morons who supported his bad manners. Just wondering how our recruits enjoyed themselves.

Students responded to East by displaying the vulgar symbol, at which point East says "keep them up there."

BREAKING: Rapper Dave East tells students at St. John's Tip Off to "put up the middle finger for Donald Trump," students emphatically cheer.

I'm all for this, but as soon as Fox News gets wind of it they will go into attack mode and three different shows will lead with it.

Well, at least we will know it's not fake news.

when we are down 20 at MSG the 114 guys usually turn into thugs. Especially that guy Ralph :)

I voted for Trump and so did many others on the board. You think it’s funny if we give our opinion on appropriateness or is that only reserved for Democrats. But, I get your point, the Clintons are the epitimy of appropriateness.. I guess you found my post on pg. 11 funny ( ironic).

People can say what they will about the Clintons, but neither one ever stooped so low as to believing it was appropriate -- no, make that funny -- to mimic a disabled reporter.

Twitter Comments:

Well done students. Trump could care less about the plight of all of you.

I wonder if #SJUBB will issue apology? or risk losing season ticket holders? We will see.

We will. Pretty sure most will forget, not care; some may drop, others will add if the team is good. - NR

it's kids... No one will care at the end of the day.

All these conservatives mad that a school full of non-white students would join a small protest against a figure who openly hates them

Couldn't keep politics out of midnight madness? Come on

Good

Firstly, who is Dave East?
Secondly, why would those comments be part of a basketball pep rally?
Thirdly, why would the students accept this

Not my school anymore.

What an incredibly heroic and novel thing to say. I wonder if he thought that up all on his own.

Should stop asking for money, small time operation throughout

Who the #### is dave east?!?!? What a joke

Disgraceful!

Even though I voted for Trump. I’ve always said his mouth is too big and he tweets too much. Plenty of his behavior was inappropriate, such as your example. Unfortunately we didn’t have saints running for president. Hence, the title of the thread, the lesser of 2 evils. IMO, both candidates had plenty of inappropriate behavior. That said, I hate getting too political and this thread is taking a bad direction.

There's actually more to this dialogue of Twitter responses. It perhaps wasn't the right stage or time for East's "protest." But for the fans who want to move on or depart allegiances with the school (who wasn't responsible for East's protest or views).... F 'em! Bye!

. People don’t have to go crazy over this. It doesn’t warrant giving up season tickets. If one as offended, don’t buy his records.
