Alumni Game / Midnight Madness

Once again, your prejudices and pre judgments blind you from the fact that I’m actually Puerto Rican. But as usual with many, facts get in the way.

I truly have no desire to lock this topic as I would much rather read the meaningful debate on midnight madness , the recruits in attendance , who looked good , any improvement spotted , any lack of improvement , any coaches sitting on tables, Jordan Brown, the great job panther2 did in organizing the Alumni Game , the entertainment, student energy , etc. However, I truly have no interest in reading about Donald Trump, who started the political mess the country is in, and the personal insults that have taken over this thread. I ask that you please stop.
Thank you for your cooperation

Expanding upon what The Honorable “Redmannorth” said you should expect that your post will be deleted if you make childish insults or post racist innuendo in this or other threads.

This site was created by “pmessell” to discuss basketball related topics and not to discuss politics or to hurl childish insults. When you were given the privilege to post on this site you promised to abide by certain Rules which prohibit many of the posts contained in this thread.

Capiche?

Kudos to the moderators This thread had you guys working overtime. Unfortunately it took my posting the lyrics to one of Dave's most popular songs to get things back to the basketball aspect of the festivities.
Bottom line is St. John's has devolved in recruiting from impressing recruits with their tradition of hard nosed basketball to using rap music artists to impress African American teens into gaining an interest in the program (and school).
The music doesn't faze me. It didn't faze me when I cheered the lyrics of "Up against the wall redneck mother" or when I first saw David Peel perform "Up against the wall Muthafckr" at CBGB in the late 60's. Like Dave East, and rappers in general, David Peel and The Lower East Side Band freely used lyrics about marijuana and "bad cops" with the "F" word and appealed mostly to hip kids and disenfranchised white kids. Hip hop artists do the same shtick but the audience and the music has changed.
The point? St. John's would not have invited David Peel in 1969 to impress its many white targets from the city CHSAA to impress them and their parents because we didn't have to. We had a real basketball tradition to be proud of.
The latest trend which Mullin seems to support, while entertaining for the students, will not close the deal with recruits and only upset older fans.
Maybe if he and his team play competitive basketball in the future our midnight madness will look more like Duke's or Kentucky rather than North Carolina A&T.

  why am I not surprised somebody from the class of 72 can’t tell you how Kentucky uses drake ( who talks about smashing and leaving women) and Future ( the creator of dirty sprite legendary 2) for their midnight madness.

Let me guess, Georgetown using Meek Mill is classier to right?

Side note: North Carolina A&T rarely does a midnight madness anymore. But again class of 72

I would like to express my appreciation to Nick Vidakis, Mary Pat Bierne, Paul Scalafani, Justin Talavera, Ron Guzas, and Tyrone Grant for helping make this year's Alumni Reception and Game a successful event. Everyone had a nice time and Coach Carnesecca was able to interact with the players at the Pre Game reception. Most important, none of the old folks got hurt.

Looking forward to making next years Alumni event bigger and better.

I think your instincts about locking the thread was correct. It would have avoided the political commentary on your part.

I don't care what your political views are, or that they differ from miine. But as a moderator we must adhere to Pauls's "no politics allowed." And you sneaked one in.

Anyway, all good. Over and out.

We are...

I think some on here are confused as to what the Players do during Midnight Madness. For the players and fans, the purpose is entertainment only. They are out there to put on a show, enjoy themselves, and that is all. This is not just St. Johns, I have attended Midnight Madness at a few schools, and it is all about entertainment and having fun.

The players have been working out all summer and since the school year began with very little break. Midnight Madness is not meant to be a practice, but a time to introduce this year's team to the fans.

If you really want to see what is going on and how practice is run, send an email to the Athletic Director or the coaching staff, suggesting that they have an open practice for the fans,

Since the last midnight madness I attended was Felipe and Zendon's freshman year, I admit to being one of those who are "confused" about what to expect. So what I did was I googled the Kentucky Wildcat Midnight Madness, ya know, just as a basis of comparison. What I found was that there is no comparison. See for yourself:

While the Kentucky kids most certainly had a good time during their scrimmage, as well as entertained the crowd, the didn't act like a bunch of clowns. Our kids OTOH looked like an inept version of the Harlem Globetrotters. Better yet, an inepter version of the Washington Generals. If this program and team wants to be taken seriously, they need to start acting seriously. Considering where this program has been and where it currently stands, I would not have expected anything less than a serious approach from the moment we first stepped foot on the court this year. Its called "setting the tone".
