I agree that is disgusting and inappropriate behavior. But are we surprised? Our society and culture has been descending into the vulgar for generations, becoming more coarse, more strident, and more shallow.
Right or Left. Believer or atheist. White or black. 'Educated' or ignorant. Rich or poor. See it for what it is.
Our country is living through a slippery slope of what is right and appropriate and classy versus what is wrong, disgusting, and vulgar since the 1960s--when the youth culture forgot what constituted civil and constitutional protest and morphed into storefront hippie themes comfortably held mantras that were hollow and shallow and collapsed.
The late / great Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan captured this phenomena with his 'defining deviancy down' concept.
We continue to live through it.
I will say a few things: 1) It was wrong to do that vulgar display--counter with ideas, not social dystopia; 2) But also totally unsurprising--and even expected--given what the country has become and where it is we find ourselves. 3) I must say Donald Trump is the poster boy for bad taste on numerous fronts and the master of dystopic behavior--but there is the right way to protest and the wrong way--and giving the finger and howling is wrong and gross. 4) How many of us would have reacted with this umbrage and outrage if the students had been holding the Middle Finger up and howling at Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama?
I pray as many who today are spewing vitriol in disgust--rightfully so--at the students' behavior last night.
