Adonis De La Rosa,

I cannot believe that this entire board is so excited about recruiting a kid who is no even a top 100 recruit! This is so pathetic!

I'm not sure you are reading the same Adonis thread as the rest of us. This one has people either calling him fat or expressing relief that we found a big man who may eventually be serviceable when he loses weight.

I'm leaning toward him being serviceable sooner rather than later because he will be getting a bunch of minutes next season that he's really not prepared for. I'm hoping volume of minutes alone will speed up the process. he's got soft hands, so I think he will be able to score right away if we get him the ball inside. Hopefully his body will create space because his vertical certainly won't.

While he does have a nice touch and decent footwork and hands, he is not particularly assertive around the hoop. He's also going to have a tough time down low against the much more athletic big men he will be going up against. I would not expect much scoring from him initially. Hopefully over time he gets in better shape and becomes more assertive, then we'll likely see his offensive output increase.

Critical to get Adonis into off season conditioning program. Good point on assertiveness & potential for better offensive production. As many have said, in time, with hard work, he could become a functional big man. Just be patient in year one.

Additionally, by all accounts Adonis is a good kid, likeable and coachable. Qualities that shouldn't be overlooked.

Team first type player as well, a refreshing change from selfish play exhibited by some at SJU this year.

Very happy to Land Adonis. I think if we can now land a guy like Kevin Thomas with his attitude and aggressiveness it will help Adonis progress quicker and learn to play with aggressiveness as well. If Adonis is playing next to a player who gets after it the way people are saying Kevin Thomas does hopefully it rubs off on Adonis and Christian Jones. I'd like to get Thomas also.

If we can have the Delarosa brothers at Center next season with Thomas and Jones at the PF spot, that not terrible. Our 4 guards are going to really good. As long as those four guys at the 4 and the 5 can rebound, play defense, score garbage baskets and make foul shots we can be a good team with the way I expect our Guards to perform. If we can nab Thomas, We just need someone to plug into that small forward slot.

Like I said, I'm happy we're getting Adonis, but I think those of you that believe we just need capable rebounders/defenders at the 4 and 5 are way off.
Our guards are good, but they're not capable of carrying the team.
This year we got a lot of scoring from Sampson and Sanchez ..and even with them we still weren't a very good offensive team.

Look, this is better than nothing. But it's not what we needed.
What we needed, to take a step forward, was a difference maker at the 3/4 who could shoot and rebound. But guys like that are named Moe Harkless or Deandre Daniels and they aren't the leftover recruits signed in April or found on JUCO rosters.

Adonis and Thomas can help stem the exodus and at least give us names to pencil in at the 4/5 (in addition to C Jones). But if the team was going to improve, we needed Obekpa to return and continue to develop, and to sign an impressive combo forward to replace Sanchez/Sampson.

Totally agree.

The damage was done when Lavin put all his 2014 eggs in the I.Whitehead basket. Not signing two forwards in 2014 (even if Obekpa and Sampson stayed) is just unforgivable.

Lets not forget that he also has a couple of teammates at CTK that we wouldn't mind having at STJ down the road.

Welcome aboard Adonis.

Did I miss an announcement? Everyone is posting as if ADR has committed.

I was kind of thinking the same thing........we of all people should know that nothing is for sure until it's officially announced.

I don't think anyone is expecting that Adonis and Thomas, if they commit, to be the answers to all that ails us. In a perfect world, they would be solid roll players on a very good team. But that's not the case here. In any event, we're better as a team with one or both then we are without them.

This is where Pointer stepping up and playing to his #25 ranking would be helpful. Not sure if that ship has already sailed though. Would be nice to think it hasn't.

You are incorrect. It is not pathetic for the board is excited about a kid who despite the crap that is going on around here, is still keeping SJU at the top of his list. No need to get on a recruit or posters for that. While Dela Rosa may not be listed in the top 100 highschool players, he ranks higher than you as a poster with any sensitivity.

I don't care if you step on Lavin, he has earned that. But would you be happier if Dela Rosa picked another school like Pitt or South Carolina instead?

Agreed, and some on here act as if we're asking him to replace Olajuwan. If he averages 4 points and 5 rebounds, shoots better than 41% from the free throw line and isn't out of position on defense (whether he blocks 3 shots per game or not), then he likely is an upgrade for us as a team. Those numbers don't seem all that outrageous.

And if he's willing to go into a game when asked to...he's an upgrade.

People are disappointed because Adonis is our highest ranked recruit and replacing much higher ranked guys. If he was the 3rd or 4th highest ranked guy in a class I'm sure people would be more excited.

I'm happy to have him on board. People finally get a local player that they have been begging for. Welcome Adonis!

He really didn't put all his eggs in the I. Whitehead basket because we stopped recruiting him same as we did for Carrington out of Loughlin. Remember it was Whitehead who asked for the meeting with St. John's before he announced his decision. Quite frankly, he kept all of his eggs for next year until now when he has to scramble. One exception, was De La Rosa, who he has been watching for awhile but even then I don't think the full court press occurred until the last couple of months.

From the way you guys describe him, I was picturing Adonis looking like this:
