As much Tariq helped us the past two years, he and his dad pulled the plug on loyalty when they asked for his release - do what is best for the team at this point.

Have heard return to St Johns went from being ruled out to now being considered #sjubb

As intriguing as grad transfer options may be, if I'm St. John's, I would prefer to keep Tariq Owens. Continuity is important, and he keys their defense. Just my two cents. #sjubb

Sense where this is going?

Yes. The Owens boys are having a hard time finding a landing spot.
Shortsighted by Zach in that Keita is not a 40 minute center and Owens clearly can't play the position. We would have zero depth at the five position again and hoping for Kofi and likely ending up with tea leaves.

There is also no guarantee we get a solid big fifth year transfer if Owens were to leave. I would take Owens back in a heart beat. While I agree that Owens coming back would diminish our chances of getting an impact big fifth year transfer, I’m not sure why the staff would not continue to pursue this. I thought they planned on targeting a grad transfer big even before Owens sought his release.

I thought the plan was to target a grad transfer big even if Owens was returning. There is no reason there can't be enough minutes for 3 guys at the 4/5 with Clark filling in there on occasion.

Here is the thing for me. Femi definitely I'd rather have as he seems more well rounded. Trey I didnt even think we had shot at but maybe we do. What happens if you dont land either and lose Tariq vs lets say Tariq coming back ASAP. So what do you do ? Take a chance and get no Grad Bigs ( we saw how that worked out last year when supposedly Matt had one virtually locked up )

Tariq was good kid. Personally if he was the sure thing first I'd take him back

But I still want a warm body big man even if Juco to help up front

Very sensible

I do hope Tariq returns. That said, even before he requested his release, I felt we needed another body in the paint.

Is it me or do the teams we play all seem to have at least three big guys shuffling in and out of the game? I guess not being able to add a big in addition to Tariq is a by product of going the grad transfer route. Grads know they have one shot left and want to be sure they get minutes.

I sense Owens never wanted to leave so the father and the AAU coach apparently started this venture. To me, Tariq is not perfect, but always hustles and helps defensively. Lastly, better optics,if he returns, for the program imo. Hope he returns, but respect opinions to contrary, tricky situation.

I agree even with his return there is still a need for some strength up front. Maybe Matt will surprise us, but not confident about that.

Ah, the hell with Grad Big dreams. Tariq was a Johnny. If the prodigal son wants to return, he’s welcome back. I think—judging by reading tea leaves of knowledgeable posters here(Paultz, et al)—that will be very tough in this piranha-like college recruiting reality, and likely means Juco.
Tariq...welcome back.

Owens got his release. I think the staff has to weigh its options and do what’s best for SJU. Take the player who will help us the most. That said, recruiting is a tough game. Don’t want to tell Owens to take a hike and them get burned by a grad transfer.

[quote="RedStormNC" post=280090]How does Tariq Owens fit into Texas Tech’s system?

It is quite possible that Owens made up his mind while landing in Lubbock. Flat dusty plains with no city skyline compared to departing NYC. All this to possibly play 20 minutes a game? No matter how you spin it TT is a football school and Mr. Owens senior doesn't appear to be a Buddy Holly fan.
I don't picture Tariq as a high plains drifter but those Texan cowgirls are experts in the cowgirl position.

Recent intel points toward highly unlikely TO returns. May be best for both parties.

Well I for one certainly hope he returns to SJU and would welcome him with open arms. He has been a great representative and teammate alll 3 years at SJU. Is his game perfect , no it is not and he has been very inconsistent. However, he has contributed well to the team and his transfer to SJU has been a simbiotic relationship for both parties. I look forward to watching him play here next season.
While we are not perfect the grass is far from always greener.

I would be happy if he returns, but also would be happy if we got a competent grad transfer big. Like I said, I’m for getting the player who would help us the most next year.

I don't think it should be that hard to bring Owens and a grad transfer. We just need to be delicate.

We don't have to worry about Keita transferring for two more seasons. So as I believe I've said before, I'm all for the staff being vague about his role right up until he's coming off the bench in the first game. Owens and a grad transfer with Clark up front, Ponds and Simon in backcourt, Dixon and Keita major minutes off bench. Roberts, Williams, Earlington eased in slowly.

And you have to figure that if we have a good enough season, Keita would be happy -- and a starter in 2019-20 -- and hopefully all would be forgiven.
