Perhaps dad should just move on, make his choice & not engage the masses at this point.
Agreed. We can't let parents/handlers take us hostage. If he was good enough to be the focal point, he would've been. To counter Mr. Owens, here's another quote: "Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar"...Tariq's numbers are what they are because that's what he is. Good luck to him, but surprised if he turns into focal point of Maryland or wherever.

Kid was not perfect but was a good role player and played hard. Good luck to him.
Here is the thing, there is enough things to rip Mullin for. This isn't one of them.

It's Dad's time in the spotlight.
Very dim one though
IF he could post up he'd easily get 10 looks per game. He can't, so he won't
Great point!

The Loyola center btw looks like a beer league guy, but can post up, make crafty moves to basket & find cutters or open perimeter guys. TO lacks those weapons and really does not have great perimeter skills & handle. I do appreciate his hustle, decent jumper and shot blocking but he really is a hybrid role guy. We can’t replace him easily, but dad is just too subjective imo.

He's the only big we have, so it's our best option right now. However, I cannot remember him ever playing with his back to the basket the way a big should play. He actually plays like a 3, minus ballhandling, moves to the hoop, and man on man defense.

He’s not that good of a shooter. Would love him to stay, but he’s 6 11 w long arms. We need a big, not a 3. Can’t see many high major programs allowing him to take a lot of shots from the perimeter. But at this point they can promise him to be their starting SF and make him a backup anyway. That’s why posters are upset, because his fathers comments are not in sync w his skills and in all probability he will not be moving into a better situation.
With Tarig's father going public with his demands the players on whatever team he ends up can be sure that their coach has agreed to make Kareem, rather Tarig the focal point of the team's offense and all current players, especially the bigs are going to have to sacrifice to accomadate Tarig.
Perhaps some of them might want to get on the transferring carousel.
I don’t think the bigs have to worry. I’d hate to be a 2 or 3 on Tariq’s new team. Their shots are going to have to decrease to accommodate Tariq’s father LOL.

How does Mr. Owens know for sure what school will field an NCAA tourney team? Sima is playing in the NIT. Darien Williams was dismissed by an excellent coach at Nevada. Malik Ellison has had to sit a year on what turned out to be the worst team in the ACC and whose coaching staff was fired. And, if he goes to a blue blood that is "likely" to make a post season appearance, then he sure as shit won't be a focal point of their offense.
The bottom line is that this is purely a demand for more touches by his father and fewer touches by Ponds, Simon and Clark and anyone else the staff can bring in even if it means forcing Mullin to change his offensive sets for the sake of one player's stats. That is insane! The father must think he can pull this off against a novice coach like Mullin but no coach who is established with a winning program would fall for such demands.
For Christ sake, the ball boy on Kentucky was likely a McDonald’s All American. Mullin and Matt need to stay away from soccer mom dads!

St. John’s grad transfer Tariq Owens will take a visit to Maryland on the 27th & 28th, per a source. Owens averaged 8.4 PPG & 5.9 RPG last season.
St. John’s transfer Tariq Owen is down to Maryland, Oklahoma State, Ohio State, Ole Miss, Texas Tech, Western Kentucky, ODU & VCU.

Per Evan Daniels

Wouldn’t Ok State be funny
So besides an overly involved Dad , irrational confidence, lack of low post game and erratic jump shot, Owens biggest problem is his amazing inability to gain weight. So based off his choices lets break down where he should go.
7. Ohio State-I googled Ohio famous for what food and basically nothing comes up. Scratch them off his list.
6. VCU / ODU-Ham and Peanuts. Not a big Virginia Ham fan and peanuts are useless. Scratch them off the list.
5. Ole Miss-Fried Chicken per google. Now we are talking but there are still better options.
4. OK state-BBQ-LIke me some BBQ but not there yet.
3 .Maryland-Crab Cakes. I like Crab Cakes!
2. Kentucky- Fried Chicken Duh and BBQ. Should win except for....
1. Texas Tech-BBQ and Tex Mex. I like me some Tex Mex
He should go to Texas Tech!

What mystifies me is why Mr. Owens Sr. Is talking like a Father exploring the School he wants his son to play at . like Tariq is 18 Years Old again . He isn’t . But, a Father wanting what is best for his Son, player or not , is commendable . It’s just a bit misplaced in this Case . Tariq’s game is what it is and it will be the same wherever he plays . It would be interesting to know , what Owens Sr and Jr are looking for , that isn’t available under Mullin and Richmond , the 2 Coached counted on to Bring our the best in the Player . I think our Cosches have done that with Tariq .

Not my point. What I am saying is that once you sit out a year and attend classes, the better students can graudate in 4 years with one year of eligibility left, then pick what they feel is the best situation for them once again (3rd time) without having to sit out. I don't think it enhances their NBA chances at 23, but it gives them one more free chances to choose a school without sitting out.

These kind of posts are counter-productive to the program in so many ways. Just my opinion.

Any of us that plays sports had sports dads in some way or another, Some were insane in overestimating their ability some were the complete opposite underestimating in order to push them harder ( ok jesus that was some shrink dr shit I just let out ) and some others were the mild mannered people who just sit in the stands and watch

We are looking for grad transfers now so while yes I think Tariq's dad is unrealistic at the same time we are trying to convince someone else dad who might be just as unrealistic at their current school so we really shouldn't cast stones in glass houses
Gee, I thought the Mullin offense was basically, if you are open and have a good shot take it.
Good luck elsewhere, Tariq.
Glad you said it as Mr. Owens had the common courtesy not to. It is what it is, a pro style no offense offense. Occasional pick and roll. The next time they feed the bigs will be the first, and that's what his problem is. The only way Owens could get the ball besides Simon's pick and roll alley oops was to head out to the 3 pt line where the ball was stuck like dogs to fire hydrants in January. It might have been the best way to win almost half their games but they obviously feel it wasn't a style that Tariq felt like playing any more if he didn't have to. Kid attended STJ for three years and is welcome to do what he wants IMHO.

Maybe if he banged the O boards more, he'd average more than 6 shots a game. It's not rocket science. You're one of the tallest on the floor and your rebound numbers suck.. He'd average a few extra shots more per game just by placing himself in a good rebound position. Get a few bunnies and watch your ppg and your shooting average go up...

I congratulate you for having the stones to point that out in Mullin's offense. Sometimes I think Justin Simon learned that play while at Arizona and surprised Mullin with that play". Ironically, we were forced to use Alibegovic in the end out of desperation and Yakwe never saw daylight again with Mullin eve using a walk on guard rather than use any semblance of an inside play. Can't wait to see how Keita and the unrecruited big will be used.

Exactly , his dad happens to be a very nice guy . Very affable
And a pleasure to talk hoops with . Switch positions with him and maybe you’ll feel differently . That being said I hope he stays because I really enjoy Tariq’s hustle and attitude .
