Geez, only eight teams. That bodes well for us. :(
He's down to one team but doesn't want to give the impression that discussions took place during his time here.
Having that Big 10 body must be giving him away.
If he avg say 13 & 10 next year, what does that say a our staff?

Just remember, as a recent trip down memory lane, was that when Christian Jones was in the very same situation, the discussion was whether Mullin would cut him loose (he had a red shirt year), or allow him to stay at St. John's as a grad student. We had zero problem with Christian exploring his options and going elsewhere, and the biggest advocates for him staying here saw a lot of potential in his final 25+ point game. However, not a single person had a problem with him looking elsewhere.
If we want players to commit to us we have to truly commit to them. We didn't get mad when CM chased of CJ or AA (of course AA always wanted to be hear and stayed because we couldn't fill a team). If that is acceptable Tariq looking elsewhere has to be fair play.
You make a good point re. Jones and Amar but Owens is or was a big part if the puzzle for year four. He either doesn't want competition for his minutes (selfish) or his dad has no confidence that our staff can get Tariq to improve his game any further. My guess is that it is more of the latter.
Three straight losing seasons while he has been on campus doesn't exactly scream optimism but sadly, no matter where Owens transfers to, he will in no way have a bigger role and ultimately will have to learn a new system (or a real system ) as opposed to the free style he has been accustomed to with Mullin's NBA offense.
We are both losing if he transfers but I think he loses more by going to a 3rd school.
Finally, the more troubling thing here is the willingness of players to leave Mullin, whether it is their 2nd, 3rd, or 4th year.
I thought I heard the announcers day that Nevada's entire starting 5 wete transfers.

It's interesting, but for 4 year players transferring just once and having to sit out a season automatically creates a "free move" for student athletes who carry enough credits. Complete your degree in 4 years and you can transfer to another school without having to sit out again. It creates the recruiting process all over again with the dizzying allure of being wanted by many. In an era where a 5th year experienced player has value in the post season where a 23 year old competes against touted 18 year old freshmen who never dealt with the pressure of the dance, it almost makes sense for an owens to pick a school he knows will field a tourney team.

Its likely what drove Williams to leave also

While I disagree with his reasoning, As a man I do respect his honesty. Nowadays, people try to tell you a PC answer. At least Mr. Owens is honest.

I still wish he was here, but I have to give his father props for telling us the truth.
As I said before, not quite as bad as LoVett bailing, but not much better. It’s all about the individual, and not about the team. It’s tough enough when you have a star player trying to call the shots. It’s a whole other thing when you have a roll player and his Father trying to call the shots. Chris must be pulling his hair out with these kids. No wonder he keeps it so short, makes it that much harder to grab.

If his dad wants more than 6 shots a game then it's probably down to the last 3...

Tariq averaged closer to 7 shots per game with us this year. I see no reason he couldn't get another shot or two per game with us next year, especially if he works on his offensive moves over the summer beyond hoisting 3 pointers. I agree with Gman, if his dad thinks he has to get more than 8-9 shots per game to maximize his pro aspirations, it would have to be with a run and gun mid-major team.
As others have said, it seems obvious that Tariq is better off staying with a major program and getting exposure with respect to his greatest attributes, namely athleticism, shot blocking and grit. Assuming they believe SJU can win enough next year to dance, don't get why the family thinks he is better off leaving.
However, I don't agree with those who compare his situation in any way with Lovett. He played two years with us and gave 100% in every game and is ready to graduate. No reason that the parents and student should feel an obligation to stay with our program if they feel they are better off at a different school. While most of us think the idea of him being an offensive focal point at a major conference school is unrealistic, it is natural for a parent to see their child in the best possible light. Hope he stays and believe that will best serve his and the SJU's interest, but wish him well whatever his decision.

Simply put, Tariq got 6 shots a game because that's what he is. He's not going to take over a game...he's not Kevin Durant. He's a solid bench player on a good team in a major conference in a perfect world. His shot is far from reliable. As someone else said, at least his father was honest. I respect that even though I think he's making a big mistake. We really need to start finding guys who put the program and the name on the front of the jersey first. I understand players are looking out for their professional careers, but at the same time focus on one thing at a time. Your time in college should be spent refining your skills, practicing, and getting a degree. Even some great Big East players won't make an NBA bench. If you're that good, your payday will come.

Scholarships are shockingly overlooked in terms of their power. I have a pretty good job and I pay about $425 (would be about $900 if I wasn't in the loan forgiveness program) a month for my SJ graduate degree. That's a luxury car payment. All it takes is one bad injury to end your career and you will be at Starbucks if you don't have at least a BA/BS. Even a BA/BS these days is like having an iPhone (everyone has one). IMO too many players/parents/handlers think they're LeBron and Durant...they need to humble themselves. Of course top 10 type guys are exceptions and can easily forego a degree. Btw, I know he's graduating but I mean college basketball players in general.

I respect the honesty by his dad, but what will get him a pro contract is his defense and athleticism. More freedom on offense may actually hurt his chances at the pros. He has a mediocre jump shot and no post moves.

You have to earn your role no matter what team you play for. I would think for a grad transfer who has a body of work that would be even harder based on what you have produced prior and the fact that you are a one year rental.

I posted this on other board and it is a 100% true story. I coached 8-10 year old kids in little league last year. First day of practice a kid shows up wearing a glove on his throwing hand. After we determined which hand he actually should throw with, I spent the whole year teaching him how to throw and trying to not get him hurt. Towards the end of the season this kids dad comes up to me complaining on how come his son can't play first base. I thought he was kidding. Sadly he wasn't. That dad and Owens dad should hang out.

You'd be better off giving him a drug test.

This kids father is a dumb strategist and is going to screw up his sons career, just like Lovetts dad.

Hes not getting 10+ shots on any program higher than midmajor level. All of the other major conf schools he is looking at will have him come off of the bench for even fewer minutes, points and rebounds than last year. Although some unscrupulous coach will lie and tell him otherwise.

Those 6 shots got him 8.5 & 6 this year. If he even only matched those numbers next season, on a ranked tourney team, in the BE conf, with NY media focus, it will be better for his "goals and aspirations" than taking 12 shots for some mediocre A-10 team.

Gee, I thought the Mullin offense was basically, if you are open and have a good shot take it.
Good luck elsewhere, Tariq.

With Tarig's father going public with his demands the players on whatever team he ends up can be sure that their coach has agreed to make Kareem, rather Tarig the focal point of the team's offense and all current players, especially the bigs are going to have to sacrifice to accomadate Tarig.
Perhaps some of them might want to get on the transferring carousel.

Father’s latest
“Our meeting with Coach Mullin went well. So don’t think it was bad. If you watched the games we played there’s a saying “Men lie women lie numbers don’t” watching games don’t lie either. I’ve watched every game and I watch everything #11 do and don’t do”

Perhaps dad should just move on, make his choice & not engage the masses at this point.
