McKillop good coach. Did we try to get him here?. Where is he now?
I believe there were a lot of posters who were suppportive of his candidacy during the Fraschilla and/or Jarvis searches. Not sure if he was interested even back then pre Steph.

I mean, maybe he should have a ‘system’ that works with really talented players like the system Dan Hurley, Mark Few, John Scheyer, Tom Izzo, Shaka Smart, Sean Miller, John Calipari, Ed Cooley, Chris Beard, Bill Self etc have. Seems silly to hamstring yourself with a system that only works for former Iona players and future military personnel. RP may have hamstrung himself with that limited demographic. They are also not ranked by how they would fit into a specific style of play or system. Pitino sees something he likes in these kids at some point we have say "let's wait and see".
We can debate all day whether these players being recruited by Pitino are better than last years players or not all day; we will not know until we see how they perform, and even after that some will say "wow, imagine what Pitino could have done with last year's roster. The debate may never be resolved LOL.
We all also speak to the fact we need to win in order to bring in top talent. While Pitino has name recognition that obviously is not everything (especially with the timing of his hire). When we add winning to the name recognition I believe we can get back to the "good Ole days".
Is this your submission for most ridiculous post ever?I mean, maybe he should have a ‘system’ that works with really talented players like the system Dan Hurley, Mark Few, John Scheyer, Tom Izzo, Shaka Smart, Sean Miller, John Calipari, Ed Cooley, Chris Beard, Bill Self etc have. Maybe I’m misunderstanding your post or am behind in the discussion, is this your way of trying to get us to admit we Havnt landed super talented players yet? Obviously pitino will take really talented players. So rest assured they fit his system.I mean, maybe he should have a ‘system’ that works with really talented players like the system Dan Hurley, Mark Few, John Scheyer, Tom Izzo, Shaka Smart, Sean Miller, John Calipari, Ed Cooley, Chris Beard, Bill Self etc have. it was sarcasm. The new justification for missing out on top tier talent on this board is he is looking for ‘system’ players. The joke was other successful coaches have systems and still can recruit top tier players. It obviously didn’t land, I guess I’ll cancel my set at the Cellar.Maybe I’m misunderstanding your post or am behind in the discussion, is this your way of trying to get us to admit we Havnt landed super talented players yet? I havnt had any issues with your thoughts re pitino so far, but to juxtapose his system next to several coaches whose resume pale in comparison to RP, in attempt to question if he knows what he’s doing or not seems a stretch.
YepThe reality is recruiting in the Big East is hard. Recruiting to St John’s is hard. RP who hasn’t needed to recruit on this level for 10 years is finding it, unsurprisingly, hard. He, I believe, made it harder on himself when he went scorched earth at the press conference then promised a turn around in months not years.
For sure and he had only been away for 5 years. There is no resting on past successes in the Big East. Every recruiting battle is going to be a dog fight.Yep
Thad Matta who has never lost found that out last year. Good coaching can only take you so far these days.
He definitely wanted the job. Our whole recent history would have been rewritten.I believe there were a lot of posters who were suppportive of his candidacy during the Fraschilla and/or Jarvis searches. Not sure if he was interested even back then pre Steph.
Wasn’t it during Norm hiring? He definitely wanted the job. Our whole recent history would have been rewritten.
McKillop was a great coach, was always a pleasure to watch his teams play as I live right next door to Davidson. My understanding is he would have been interested back in those days butI believe there were a lot of posters who were suppportive of his candidacy during the Fraschilla and/or Jarvis searches. Not sure if he was interested even back then pre Steph.
Nope neither played at IonaSo let me get this straight
McKillop and Norm are on the roster next year?
Did SJU hire Roberts over Mckillkop or Jarvis over him? Why did SJU need extra funds to hire Jarvis? He was a mid-major coach who experienced some success at GW. Can’t imagine he was commanding a top salary at the time.Mckillop had the job. Even told his Davidson players at the time he was leaving. Deal was done. Nike then stepped in and provided funds/sponsorship $ to SJU to hire Jarvis. Fact.
It was Jarvis. Nike wanted Jarvis in place and SJU wanted Mckillop. Nike ponied up funds for Jarvis they where not ponying up for McKillop.Did SJU hire Roberts over Mckillkop or Jarvis over him? totally agree RP has no idea what he is doing. Definitely hamstrung himself. WOW horrible post!!!!! One of the iona guys was originally a louisville guy only came to iona cause of RP. Ever think and wonder thats the same reason the other players came to IONA? Come on now!!!! Stop bashing our new committs they see these boards too and I welcome them. There not iona guys any more there OUR GUYS. Start thinking that way PLEASEIs this your submission for most ridiculous post ever?
or e that he just started recruiting these guys and only had the job for a month. Can say the same why they not going to Seton Hall or Duke or the other colleges that are also recruting them. Come on now. RELAX CALM DOWN. Look at what we could of had another year of losing without hope with Anderdson and the bad news bearsit was sarcasm. The new justification for missing out on top tier talent on this board is he is looking for ‘system’ players. the majority of this board are big time RP fans. And I believe all but the most ardent RP devotee are probably a little underwhelmed by the recruiting haul. So as a bit of rationalization for not getting top tier talent the words ‘culture’, ‘basketball IQ’, and ‘system’ are being bandied about like having top tier talent and being able to work in a system are mutually exclusive. Ridiculous. It’s even more ridiculous to think that a HOF coach like RP wouldn’t alter his system to let a top tier talent achieve their highest potential.
Get LeBron first, focus your plan around him and then go out and get Kyle Korver because he is a system guy.
RP is smart he’s not passing on top tier talent because he wants guys that play Pitino Ball. Top tier talent is passing on him because a) recruiting is hard, b) he coaches a team that hasn’t won in a dog’s age, c) he’s has to recruit at level of competition he hasn’t see for the past 10 years AND d) all the rules are new.
Thank you LW ( Orville, Wilbur & Larry ? lol)SSG
Again Pitino is miles ahead of Anderson. But not sure how you quantify that in wins. 3 seems aggressive. But if it is 3 that puts last year team on bubble. Any more than that and we are in. I would have liked to see him take more of last year team and enhance it through the portal. Think we make tournament that way.
Not going to lie, with each new recruit, losing the kids we did seems like a worse decision every time.
And people can’t have both ways, if the players were so bad, how was Anderson such a bad coach?
Which he was
