2023-24 Roster

In the ratio of recruiting effort to production on the court, there may have never been anyone who stretched it quite like Marco Baldi.

This is a great story from the archives of the LA Times of all places on everyone and their brother trying to land Baldi.

“The thing is, I’ve coached a lot of players who were more talented,” McKillop said. “Marco is a good player, but he’s no great talent. He’s not a franchise. I’ve had a number of Division I players, but none with this kind of fanfare. It’s the Italian thing.”

Funny line. Had to laugh.

We need a Theo John type of player. A banger down low who will set screens, play defense, grab rebounds, and finish around the rim. I think two of our final five ships need to be HS recruits.
Another benefit of Theo John was he seemingly had 8 years of eligibility somehow! That type of player would be a benefit to any team. He even ran the floor well for a big dude.

Years remaining in ()

PG - Jenkins (1)

2/3 - Alleyne (1)
PF - Slazinski (1)
C - Soriano (1)

Bench - Conway (1)
Bench - Davis (3)
Bench - Traore (3)
Bench - Keita (3)

Main targets as of now and where they slot in if they commit:
Mgbako (Lock to start at PF)
Ledlum (Lock to start at SF or PF)
Demary (Starts along Jenkins, both as Combo Guards)
Thomasson (Starts at SG or first G off the bench in instant offense type role)
Cormac Ryan (Likely starting SF)
Glenn Taylor (Could start at the 3 or be first wing off the bench)
Dunlap (Mid bench piece)
Meyer (Probably slots in between Davis and Traore)

He's building a "bridge team" to get to 2024. I mean look at those numbers. Even with what is assembled that's 5 open slots. As much as I want these names coming in this year we are definitely looking at a "scrappy team with shooters that can beat anyone and lose to anyone"

Unknown euro shooter?
One eye is twitching because I’m getting flashbacks of Richard Freudenberg and Federico Mussini

Does this ever work out for us?
Don't mess with my cousin Freudenberg (all Bavarians are cousins in some way or another). 🌭🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺

McKillop good coach. Did we try to get him here?. Where is he now?

To me, what it means is that the ONLY way to evaluate players is to see them perform in games and by talking to people in the business you trust who would have an informed intelligent read on a player; you know, the way coaches evaluate players. And even then, it remains a very inexact science.
You certainly don’t get reads from sterile stats and not from click bait ranking sites, when you have no idea of what credentials they have to judge players, what the criteria they use to judge and subsequently rank and how many of the “Top 100” players they can possibly evaluate to come up with anything resembling a credible list. And who really have no way to get any kind of a line on the all-important intangibles for each player.
They are also not ranked by how they would fit into a specific style of play or system. Pitino sees something he likes in these kids at some point we have say "let's wait and see".
We can debate all day whether these players being recruited by Pitino are better than last years players or not all day; we will not know until we see how they perform, and even after that some will say "wow, imagine what Pitino could have done with last year's roster. The debate may never be resolved LOL.
We all also speak to the fact we need to win in order to bring in top talent. While Pitino has name recognition that obviously is not everything (especially with the timing of his hire). When we add winning to the name recognition I believe we can get back to the "good Ole days".

This is Gen Z, words have meaning! Tough
And actions have consequences in the real world. THERE WERE ISSUES WITH THIS TEAM!
Well maybe this issue is that Gen Z does not know what it feels like to be told "no" or be held accountable for their actions. Yes that is a very big over generalization on my part. I just believe he never wanted some of the kids back the ones he wanted back he made no promises too (which is likely based on Quinn Slazinski's quotes about how coach Pitino operates). They chose to move on as should we.
