2023-24 Roster

Reading Posh's farewell tweet , apparently keeping door open to return to st johns. I read that as, "Show me some love, coach, and I'll be back."
I think so many players have coaches tell them that they are gonna start, play 28 mins per game, have the offense run through them etc etc just so that they commit and 95% of those promises get broken which is why so many kids are in the portal now. Then the next coach does the same thing and they don't learn.

Feels like Pitino isn't doing that with Posh or anybody else. He may have just told him something along the lines of "I'd like to have you back but you may only 12-15 mins and you aren't allowed to shoot 3s".

These kids have a lot of different voices in their ears saying stuff like "you're better then that!", "he(RP) doesn't appreciate you", "you can get more money elsewhere" etc etc. In the old days these kids would have jumped at the chance to be coached by one of the all time greats. No more.
The right kids will, saw it all the time in business. Called it grit.

No doubt you are right. Old days or new days some may live to regret that decision.

I take it from a lot of the comments here that many of you....

...A) Have never worked for a company that was suddenly acquired by another company

and

B) Had to reapply for your job because of that acquisition.

Well, both of those things have happened to me.

A) is a shock. And B) is a humiliating process.

So have some sympathy to all those involved.

It happened to me when I was 41. I can't imagine it happening to me at 21.

There's 2 sides to every story. I am saddened by the loss of so many of our players but I am excited to have RP as our coach. Nobody here knows what went on behind the scenes with all of these kids. I do know that the amount of attention paid by the players in the huddles was disrespectful to the coach. The players often played out of control and did not value the basketball. This cannot be tolerated if we want a top program. We also do not know the amount of NIL dollars that each player received, so we cannot just say blankly we feel bad for all the kids. They did not help themselves. I am not saying this is the case across the board but merely generalizing.

This is now being run like a business and all that matters in business is results, so RP is doing whatever it takes and at times can seem cruel toward our former players. What we are seeing is a mom and pop program moving toward the big time and the steps to get there are painful but necesary.

Here is my only concern. Not sure Pitino will be able to recruit here as well as he may think. I am not sure anyone can. I thought there was enough salvageable talent that he could have had a base to start his first team with and he would have made returning guys better.
This concern may very well be proven silly in coming months. And even if isn’t Pitino will figure out the best way to recruit at St John’s.

Every coach has(recruited well here), and most certainly Pitino will. Probably better then any of them.

I think Rick's 'brand': personality, his winning-%-age to the HOF level, his tournament wins, conference coach of the year a couple times, his track record of winning with moderate - exceptional talent, and even more his success in developing talent, will register with recruits and their 'people'.
He may not be able to recruit like he did st Kentucky or Louisville, but he's targeting a cluster of 5* and high-end 4* and I bet he'll hit on more than a few of them.
And i think it'll get easier as the wins mount and MSG becomes our 'home' court and a magnet to recruits.
Just my view, but I've never been this excited about the future of St. John's hoops.

No one has to sell me on Rick Pitino.
Even if he can’t get the players he wants because ST John’s has been a disaster, he will still be successful. For this upcoming season my only worry is he kind of tossed aside talent he could have used.
Hopefully that doesn’t bite us on the ass.

Anderson’s teams were never put together with a clear understanding of roles and expectations for the players. Street fight, have a street fight when Miller was coaching strategy. The team will be better and more prepared.
I can’t wait to see who comes and watch Pitino coach them up.
Excelsior!

Where is your grit? How come you didn’t take a pay cut for the chance to gain experience under a HOF CEO that could orchestrate a merger like that? In the old days employees would be at their cubicle at 4am calculating 400 practice spreadsheets before anyone else got there. Then they’d stay there until 10pm finishing all the companies TPS reports. Nowadays, there’s always family or some handler whispering in your ear something like ‘maybe you should due your diligence and find a situation that’s right for you’? Oh how all those people will rue the day!!

You can replace Anderson with every coach after Louie.
For me really just Storr and Posh I would have PERSONALLY liked to keep but I guess they were looking at a possible reduced role.
I am guessing Rick is confident he can bring in better players and or pieces that at least fit better.

This is the best post about the transition. In this, and my, case it's played out in public which makes it even worse. On top of that, there are so many posters weighing in that the players we had weren't really Big East players. That adds to the humiliation. I'm elated we got Pitino. I only said it should have been handled better.

Dylan drove me crazy at times in his 2nd year, but I really came to appreciate him this year. Very easy kid to root for, always 110% effort and did a lot of things well. He will do fine wherever he lands.
Again, that is what we "saw" and thought. He was one of the main culprits with the issues with this team. I have even read that the decision to let him go came from "above the coaching staff". Again, we do jot know what was going on with this team and it was obviously a lot worse than we thought!

I do think 9 out of 10 posters support Posh and probably half, like myself, have him in their top Johnnies of all-time. But we know there will always be a vocal minority of posters who are never happy. I’d imagine all fanbases have them.

There are some valid concerns with our roster at this moment, but we have one of the best coaches to ever do it who won’t just sign kids in the portal right away without seeing them in person and vetting them to ensure a good fit. Therefore the timeline will allow for people’s fears to run wild. In the past our staffs just offered guys instantly. He doesn’t have to close on the spot like a timeshare salesman and encourages recruits to take their time and look around. You can only do that when you’ve put dozens of players in the NBA.
