2023-24 Roster

Is Posh really 20 pounds overweight? Do we know he didn’t attend classes?
Yes and yes and not just Posh but a couple of other players that CMA disciplined during the season. Now CMA being made the bad guy because of it and will be part of the arbitration discussions.
One thing Pitino has learned from experience is never let players damage your cred and make sure the fingerprints lead to an assistant (T.J.? Shoes?).

Here is a question:

this time of year, is StJ’s able to conduct informal practices, and “shoot around a” where CRP and his staff can watch and evaluate the players remaining on the StJ’s roster ?

Players are in Taffner every day and nothing prevents them from informal workouts and shoot around.
Pitino's staff doesn't need live tryouts because they will rely on game tapes against top competition to evaluate players.

You have inside info about Posh missing classes or just speculation?

Most players miss classes during the season for "basketball" reasons. I'm not sure if was ever discussed on any thread here but during the season certain players were either not played (coaches decision and team rules) or barely played. Cutting classes is usually the main reason. Grad assistants are usually the snitches in these cases.
As we all know, this issue is one of the flimsy reasons for CMA's termination for cause.

Time for us fans to let Pitino sort out who’s coming back. I don’t think us fans will get details about what was going on behind the scenes so hard to make judgement on that stuff. There must be quite a bit we don’t know because the SJU admin also thinks they have “cause” in the Mike Anderson suit, so obviously it’s less rosy than we all would like to believe.

Let’s just wait til it shakes out and as much as we’d like to see certain people back, Pitino and his staff, including Van Macon who knows these kids, are vetting them and deciding if continuing at SJU is appropriate.

Ok, so you’re speculating. Posh was not suspended any games this year.

No one said Posh was suspended as far I know. I think we all hope he returns rehabilitated from a technically down season to become our Marqkuis Nowell. Although I don't think he will ever shoot as well but we can hope.

Well if posh wasn’t suspended and you have no inside info then what is your basis for speculating that he cut classes?

I am sure Posh has dreams of getting paid to play. Last year got in his head that he had to shoot threes for that to happen. For me biggest conversation as far as on court stuff is he would need to understand he has to be a facilitator not a scorer. Will Posh accept that?

In addition to having talent, he is close to Soriano. The only player Pitino had to re-recruit was Soriano….
Soriano became one of the best big men in the ncaa this past season. In step with guys like Sanogo of UConn if not better. Add Rick Pitino and a whole bunch of new talent and special things can happen. Soriano’s impact this past season as well as next can’t be understated. I don’t think he’s touched his potential yet. He needs to get into even better shape and develop at both ends to become dominant. He can do that.

i remember many a poster knocking Soriano his first season at SJU. Too slow, not enough muscle , should have stayed at Fordham, over his head , etc, etc. This staff will work with each member of the team like never before over the next 8 months to get them into better shape and better player development. Who else will have a remarkable improvement remains to be seen, but I have no doubt there will be improvement.
I will never forget the Billy Donovan transformation, totally remarkable.

I liked Soriano from the start. You could see that he was a better player than his body was allowing. I think it’s still the case, plus he needs to learn more post moves at both ends to be really dominant. Ricky P chose a good guy to build around. Soriano will be a force if surrounded by right talent and in a new system under Pitino.

What is your basis for assuming David Jones is gone?
After Soriano, he was the best player on the team. His decision making cost him his starting position and all he needs in reining in. He and Soriano are tight and is very redeemable if he chooses to stay. No way Pitino is running him off.

As for the Posh speculation, he was disciplined during the season. You may have missed the benching. He was not suspended like Curbelo. Posh is a gym rat and gives 110%. There were "non-basketball" issues. Those who have been around college ball know that that usually refers to academic issues and class attendance.
The Head coach assigns assistants to monitor academic performance but those assistants delegate that responsibility to the young grad assistants.
The assumptions have been that CMA lost control of his team but not just on the court.

In the termination letter, Anderson was fired for "failure to create and support an environment that strongly encourages student-athletes who are in the men's basketball program to meet all university academic requirements," "failure to perform your duties and responsibilities in a manner........and that Anderson failed to "appropriately supervise" his assistant coaches.

As far as we know, these kids were all good citizens. Everything the university is saying is that certain players were not in academic compliance and that is the responsibility of the head coach.

Finally, no coach can be held accountable for a student athlete getting low grades but he can be held accountable for students missing classes and study halls.

St. John's is betting $11 million dollars that it can show that the academic compliance issue didn't just involve ONE PLAYER.
