2023-24 Rankings

Mase , do you think that our team this year will more talent and have a deeper roster than Kansas St did last season? Also, do you think Pitino is a better coach than Jerome Tang? My answer to both those questions are “yes”. I know every year is different and schedules are different, strength of conferences varies from year to year, but I think we should be shooting higher than just making the tournament based on what has transpired with our program the last two months.
As Mase stated earlier, K State had two outstanding players. Can Jordan Dingle replicate Markquis Nowell's season? Nowell exceeded everyone's expectations, his performance at the Garden during the NCAA tournament was mesmerizing. Do we have a wing as good as Keyontae Johnson?

In the 22021-22 season, we beat St Peter's which went to the Elite 8 with Shaheen Holloway as the Coach. Yes, Pitino is a HOF coach but we have to see how all the pieces come together.

Personally, I look forward to playing in the Big East tournament on Friday night and an NCAA tourney bid.

There is also the fact that very few of these guys have played together or in Pitino’s system. It will take some time to gel obviously. Seems like year 2 is when his Providence, Kentucky and Louisville teams took off

One thing I'm hoping to see under Pitino is our teams will take care of business against the cupcakes and leave no doubts in those games. Under each of our coaches over the past 2 decades, we've seen struggles and even losses at home to far inferior talent. I don't see Pitino letting that happen.

Yes, exactly this. What drove me crazy over the last few years is we very rarely blew bad teams out. That's a huge reason why our NET was terrible. Yes NET capped at 10 point margins, but the efficency metrics on offense and defense were poor which was a direct result of the final scores. Have a feeling Pitino will have the team focused all game even when the game is out of reach, especially given how deep this team will be.

The top end talent is missing. What we have is the best coach in college basketball and a ton of experience. That’s hard to quantify.

This is clearly a tournament team to me, but questions abound.
Soriano is probably one of the top centers in the country. I saw a ranking of this years centers and he was something like 7. I think Dingle may have the potent to be a high end talent. We are also deep and balanced. But we will see.

You may be right and with all due respect we all have got to stop comparing situations from years ago to the present day landscape of college basketball. The Portal (and NIL) has changed things substantially.

The portal for year 1 has enabled all the player movement, and puts lots of teams in a situation where they’re trying incorporate lots of new players. Maybe that could even things up a bit, but nobody is incorporating more “new” than St. John’s.

Or Kansas St last season. In year one of Pitino’s prior regimes he was limited to bringing in immediately eligible players from the HS ranks only and very late in the recruiting season. Huge difference as he is bringing in up to 11 transfers most with tons of college experience.

I think optimism abounds . The Pitino Coaching factor is hard for the Statistics guys to gauge . Don’t underestimate it .

The last couple of years have shown the reality of mid Majors or low ranked high majors getting far in the Tournament .

K State , SD State, FAU , St Peters the year before all have shown the ability to exceed rankings .

As for us , Pitino hasn’t just filled a roster. He’s constructed it . There is a difference .

Remember too , Iona led UCONN at 1:2 in the NCAA . Their bigs , Sanogo and Clingan just wore down the Gaels in the 2 nd half .
Actually , Iona have the Huskies a better game than Gonzaga . If I remember correctly .

Good stuff, though every other year this article (or Tweet) has been written going back to the Lavin years. Last year for instance I saw multiple journalists predict we'd get that NCAA win, but we know how that went. I definitely do feel there's a better chance at least this year. Maybe the best odds since Lavin/Mullin's final year, if not better. I'll say 47% odds (85% we make the Tournament and 55% we'd win a game if we make it).

Compared to blue bloods and St. John’s itself in one to two seasons we don’t have the top end talent IMO.

The experience is crazy, though, and that can be mean a deep run of the team gels and peaks at the right time.

I don’t feel comfortable putting a ceiling on this group. The floor is dancing. The FT shooting is pretty nuts too and will win is close games.

If Creighton, Nova, Marquette , Providence , UCONN all think they have 2 All BE players , we can equal that with Soriano and Dingle .

So that makes all 6 of the Schools pretty much even , doesn’t it ?

Why shouldn’t we dream high ? And , most of the Rankings haven’t really adjusted to Wiltcher or , the possibility of the Portuguese Kid .

McDermott , Smart , Hurley , Cooley are top tier Coaches but , Neptune and the new guy at PC are not at that level yet , if ever . Matta is a very good Coach but , is rebuilding Butler and so will Cooley at G’Town .

My opinion is that we have as good a chance as any to win the BE and all that goes with it Nationally .

I think too much is being made of the number of portal players brought in . They are all experienced and were custom selected by RP,

They will fit well together and Rick will have them playing at a high level . The squad is also 5 deep past the first 5 and the 6-10 players will all contribute .

Add the Kid from Europe and we may see new Banners hoisted in CA .

I look at a roster like UNC, who is in the top 15 and honestly it isn’t scaring me. Our coaching and depth will be excellent abs we have some studs at important spots.

Love the Optimism, I am also looking forward to this season with a positive attitude.
