2023-24 Rankings

I've learned to temper expectations this early in the season. Perhaps I have PTSD from years of mediocre teams and performance. I'm going to wait until at least December 1st before trying to predict what this season will turn out to be.

Understandable. I’ve been way too optimistic in the last bunch of years. To me this is totally different situation.

The Tournament is incredibly random. The champion for EVERY year during the past decade did not make it past the Round of 32 the previous year. UConn, Kansas, Baylor, UVA, Nova, UNC, Nova, Duke, UConn. Happened literally every year. You have to go all the way back to Pitino's 2013 Louisville team for the last time the previous year's team made it past the Round of 32.

This is why I'm not placing too much emphasis on winning in the Tournament year one. Just make it in consecutive years, something St. John's hasn't done in decades, and we will win some games.

I don’t think Nova is being rated based on pedigree. Think most realize without Wright it’s a new day down there. On paper they have a strong starting 5 plus talent off the bench.

A healthy Moore could be the best player in the league. Dixon is one of the best bigs in the league. They brought in several highly rated transfers. And still have talents like Armstrong projected to come off the bench. That’s why people are high on them IMO.

Rick will have the team peaking by Dance time and could definitely win a game to be clear & depending on matchup perhaps steal another one. Getting one is success to me though considering this total roster overhaul.
Year one yes, but a hall of fame coach got to pick more of “his” players in one off season than ever before, many of them very experienced. Time needed to jell , yes, but everyone else in same boat. So I predict hall of fame coach will exceed our expectations, all other things being equal. I wouldn’t limit expectations ,because his expectations are so much different, much greater than this fan base.

I am so ready for the season. I think we compete for the top 4 in the Big East. I am not afraid of anyone considering I believe in Rick Pitino as a game Coach. Yes this team has to “jell” but who else would you want leading that effort?

He believes, We believe. More importantly the PLAYERS believe. This is going to be a fun ride with some highs and lows. My bet is on Rick Pitino.

By the way, it’s only 19 days until the Rutgers scrimmage. But whose counting am I right?

Feels like the longest off-season ever. Or maybe I just can’t wait!😜

I have made my very optimistic posts on what I think we are capable of. But will back off a little and say my floor is Top 3 in big east with a sweet sixteen but still see us deeper into tourney. Once this team gets going we have as good a collective group as any team thinking they can go far.
I made that prediction and I'm not backing off it. The s seniors and graduate transfers know this is their last chance to do something special.

They want to go out with a bang, and that's why they came to St. John's, they know that playing for Rick gives them a damn real good shot at going out was winners.

I know those guys and the guys that will return after this year are busting their asses off in the gym, and in practice.

We'll be proud watching them win, and when they have a hard fought loss because they'll give us 110% every game no matter what.

Go get it guys, we'll be watching.

BIGGEST RISER: St. John's Red Storm (No. 170 to No. 45, projected Last Four In). The Red Storm fired Mike Anderson on March 10 and needed only 10 days to lure Rick Pitino from New Rochelle (and Iona) to Queens. Myron covered the larger St. John's saga above, but suffice to say, Pitino's pursuit of an NCAA tournament bid -- and beyond -- for the Red Storm will be among the major storylines of the 2023-24 campaign.

You will see massive improvements in all areas of the game. Ball movement, shot selection, turnovers and even defense. May turn into wins but only time will tell.

Sounds like we must've hired an Hall of Fame Coach.

Arise from the ashes REDMEN, and let the rest of college hoops world ,
at long last ,
RESPECT US!

PUT ON the WAR PAINT ! BEAT THE DRUMS and SEND OUT the
SMOKE SIGNALS !

NEXT YEAR, is THIS YEAR !

Me upon contemplating this and future seasons, coming to the realization that this team, that I am very excited to see play, which should have us dancing again come March and that no one will want to play, will probably be the ”weakest“ team we will have under Pitino.

Happy Eddie Murphy GIF

The seniors and Grad transfers don't want to hear that crap "next year". They might feel disrespected by that, like aren't good enough.

Those guys came here because of Pitino who is a 2 time champ with 2 different schools. They want to go out winners.

I can gauranteed you one thing, those guys are motivated and they'll be busting their asses every game. Don't sleep on them.

I agree, that's why I said, "NEXT YEAR IS THIS YEAR", meaning we have arrived now.

The old Brooklyn Dodgers would always say, "Wait till next year," meaning that's
when they would win the pennant, and repeat that failed hope almost each year

That's why I wrote that for us next year is this year. We will win now.

Oh, "next year" I was thinking 24-25. With only a month to go I'd say this year.

No biggie.

Will compile a larger post this weekend, but #25 on 247:

No. 25: St. John’s Red Storm
247Sports overall class rank: No. 27
Will this be college basketball’s version of Colorado football? Rick Pitino might wind up being more effective in year one after overhauling the roster with transfers. St. John’s ranks second nationally in Torvik’s transfer points after Pitino essentially hit the reset button on the roster outside of Joel Soriano. Jordan Dingle is the biggest prize, but players like Chris Ledlum and Daniss Jenkins should help push this team into the NCAA Tournament, while Kansas transfer Zuby Ejiofor and former UNC signee Simeon Wilcher — technically not a transfer — provide hope for the future.
