October 10: ballots for the AP preseason Top 25 (and all-American team) are due.
October 17: AP preseason Top 25 releases.

Been several decades since St. John's had a legit chance preseason. I'll have an updated post of the rankings shortly.

Yeah that's surprising, Villanova does seem overrated by the AP relative to metrics like this as well as their incoming class. A lot of it likely has to do with their brand. They'll be ranked preseason but don't see the AP giving Neptune a third chance next year if this season is a dud.

I'd be fine with 5th in BE and 7 or 8 seed in dance; would be a tad disappointed if we weren't playing Friday night in BET.

5th & 7-8 seed are cautious. With this roster & CRP at the helm, 3-4 in BE & 6 seed is midpoint of my expectation

Yes that's my expectation. I'd really like to win a game in the BET and NCAA tournament.

At a minimum, I want to make the BET semis and win an NCAA tournament game. Anything less than that is disappointment IMO.

Does this include playing into the NCAA tournament second weekend?

Not everyone because many have said they expect a Tournament win this year. Personally I'd be pretty happy making the Tournament (not the First Four) and building momentum in the off-season with expectations of a Tournament win next year. If we do better than that then fantastic.

5-6 Big East , 1st round NCAA loss min expectation but not thrilled

This is Year 1... and hopefully the Floor of Rick's tenure in terms of success... but i find it hard to envision he'll have a more* veteran laden team under his tutelage. Have they only had a couple months together, yes... but experience has to make up for something right?

Soriano/Ledlum/Jenkins/Dingle/Alleyne/Conway... almost 25 years of collective college basketball experience.

There is no next year for these guys... I expect their attitude and veteran nature to help carry what we might lack on the Talent side...

Rick will have the team peaking by Dance time and could definitely win a game to be clear & depending on matchup perhaps steal another one. Getting one is success to me though considering this total roster overhaul.

I have made my very optimistic posts on what I think we are capable of. But will back off a little and say my floor is Top 3 in big east with a sweet sixteen but still see us deeper into tourney. Once this team gets going we have as good a collective group as any team thinking they can go far.

What the team is capable of and what realistic expectations are are two different measurements. Fans of how many teams in the BE alone could set the same expectations as those you set? 5 or 6? Means more than half would be disappointed that goals were not met. I understand that is the nature of fandom.

You are allowed to disagree with my expectations. But I dont think there is anything wrong with what I said about capable and my expectations.

If a team is capable of something how can you say it is not realistic. Of course they can be seen similarly. Now if you dont think they are capable of it then that is a different story. And yes many teams that expect it can all be disappointed.

There are at least twice as many teams at this point in the season capable of reaching your "measured" expectations as there are spaces in you "measured" expectations. I am not of the kind to believe that 50% of people should be disappointed. I just find it funny that you consider these goals a downgrade on your actual expectations. PS I want the team to achieve your optimistic goals of course and don't believe they can't, but setting them up to fail is not in my playbook.

Who cares how many teams are capable? And that is your opinion. We are as well. That is my opinion. And my "downgrade" is a bit tongue in cheek.
