2022-23 Season

Soriano is a very good rim protector and got better as the year went on. He was 6th in the league in blocked shots playing 19 mpg. I believe if he can stay on the court for 23 mpg or so he can be a top 4 BE shot blocker and strong rebounder this year. I also continue to believe that if we can get a good 4 type guy who can rebound and shoot the three we can be pretty good.

Those two are our top shot blockers so, at best, that puts them toward the middle to bottom of the league among centers.
Would you say a guy who blocks a shot once every ten minutes is not a shock blocker by any means?

We have two guys who both blocked a good amount of shots. Not obekpa, but closer to that than Sean Evans or Christian Jones.

Meh
I don't know what the infatuation with shot blockers is. Have we learned nothing from the Obekpa era?
Give me big guys with good feet, a desire to grind and solid rebounding skills.
While we are here - Soriano was 9th in defensive rebounding % and 10th in offensive rebounding % in BE play last season. Will need others to step up, but Soriano was pretty solid.

I agree with you for the most part. But shot blocking becomes a little more of a necessity when you want to pressure the ball full court. I just don’t want to see Soriano EVER guard someone 25 feet from the hoop.

Yeah I missed the 6-8 points a game in goaltends he contributed.

And refusing to go back into a BET game that if we won we danced.

Other than that he brought lots of cheers!
One of the most talented shot blockers I’ve ever seen at the college level, and absolutely infuriating to watch as a fan.

And the BET happened for those who think it is speculation: I saw the exchange happen literally 10 feet away. Add costing Dlo and Co. a chance to win a tournament game.

I'm confused. You said we are looking at a 9th to 11th place finish and seconds later you say at this time it's too early to predict next season ?
Yes I did. I stated at this point in time if there are no improvements we are looking at 9th to 11th. Then I stated if there are improvements that could change. So since we don’t know if there will be improvements or who will show up, it is too early to accurately predict any outcome. I don’t know why you are confused?

Not true on both.

Mathis could have a great game here and there but not consistent.

only true statement
Who else on the team had a decent outside/three point shot? What about PINZON leads you to believe he will be a prolific scorer? He may just become one but based on the small sample, he has not demonstrated the ability to make shots consistently. .

From what I’m hearing, our guys are hearing everything the fans are talking about.

They are essentially sticking together to prove everybody wrong. They were really disappointed as a group.

For those who don’t think our guys are going to improve this offseason enough to offset Wheels and Champ, keep watching.

They are on a mission. Go Johnnies 💪

Knock wood when you say this

The team on the list that I find interesting is Seton Hall with the coaching change. Is a tribute to the incoming coach having a positive impact or are they happy that Willard left??
They were old. Not many underclassmen who could transfer right away. Couple of their guys with another year available chose to turn pro tho.

I don't think any reasonable person thinks the staff and players aren't working hard to improve. That type of cliched talk is meaningless though. Been hearing that type of stuff with this program since the Lavin years and all last summer including Anderson himself making comments like that at media day. We don't need to hear it, we need to see it.

Very old. Cale was done. Yetna as expected given his age is going to try and play overseas or in some professional league, like Wheeler. Ike is apparently an excellent student as well and going to pursue career options. Rhoden is electing not to return and trying to be a professional. Aiken was done as well.

Richmond can’t transfer again without sitting out unless he got a waiver- that’s the one kid I thought Willard might try to take with him. The kid who transferred from Missouri is in the same boat. The older Harris is coming back to play with his brother and assume a bigger role, although the younger Harris I think is hurt too. The Hall’s 3 freshman didn’t play; I think I read at least one redshirted. Would not be surprised if one of them leave. And I think the kid they recruited for the same spot as Posh - which looks like an abject disaster for them recruiting wise - may leave, but who knows.

They had a few redshirts last year.

Regarding Soriano: not only blocks but he altered a ton of shots last season. Once he adjusted to the speed of the level, he stopped w the dumb fouls and became a significant force. Not sure why he’s being knocked when he gave us exactly what we’ve been begging for in a center after all the years we were dominated by conference bigs regardless of skill level

Pluses so far: (i) we seem to be retaining most of the team which many posters pointed to as a must this offseason, I'm a big fan of continuity especially in a program that can't expect to get top 50 players very often; (ii) Curbelo pickup is a huge boost to our backcourt and he and Posh will create multiple scoring opportunities for their teammates.
What we still need is a guy who can come off a screen in late game situations and hit the big shot - someone who has experience doing that in Div 1 play. Unless we find that guy, we will continue to lose too many close games imho. Hard to expect that this year from a frosh like Storr or a virtual frosh like Pinzon.
