while it is nice to have Kansas on the schedule, we just have to win to have a signature win on the resume for tournament time.

The problem with our OOC schedule this season, as it has been frequently in recent years, is not at the top - it's the absolute crud at the bottom.

We already have 3 games against awful opponents, with 1 or 2 more anticipated.  Why we need to play 4-5 games a year against junior high teams is beyond me.  We should be playing 2 of those games max and fill in with 100-200 type opponents.  Our strength of schedule gets weighed down and we aren't properly prepared for BE play.

Almost every high major team plays a few cupcakes during it's non conference schedule. Those games are not only designed to pad their record but also give coaches a chance to give the bench guys some run. Playing Kansas, Pitt and, potentially, Indiana in the Gavitt Games are solid matchups. Making the Kansas game potentially the first basketball game ever to be played at the new arena in Belmont is a brilliant move IMO. I would like to see us play at least one more high major team before league season begins.

Why?

Because a program with our history and Lapick’s importance in basketball. Duh!

We can call it the Lapchick Holiday Festival and kill two birds with one stone.

That might make those living down memory lane somewhat happy.

But as you know it's current iteration is just one game.  The Lapchick tournament had two games but schools just don't do that anymore.  It's all Multi Team Events and as Fordham and others have pointed out we're not in one next year.

The Lapchick Tournament was the "norm" in its day.  Major schools would host a 4 team tournament such as ours.  There were very few tournaments in the "old" days other than the Rainbow., the Real Holiday tournament at MSG with at least 6 teams (and they were great games with GO card you could see 3 games for 50cents) and a few others.  Look at the Media guide and see the various "tournaments/classics" we played in at other schools (BYU, Vandy, Kentucky, Maryland, Tenn,. Marshall, etc.).  (Heck, look at Syracuse and their "Carrier Classic" competition.)   Then revenue became a factor in getting teams to fill 3 slots in your "homer" tournament; basically double headers diluted the revenue to be paid to the cupcakes.  For Lapchick, day one's revenue had to be divided among 4 teams and same on day to.  Now playing St. Pete's and NJIT on separate nights (no tournament) one games' revenue is divided  between 2 teams

Only if Incarnate Word, Delaware State and UC-Irvine are in the field. /media/kunena/emoticons/devil.png

As someone once said (don't recall who) about the Lapchick Tournament "St. John's invites 3 teams it knows it can beat and calls it a classic".

The Slapstick tournament and no disrespect to Coach Lapchick.

The Holiday Festival and the Lapchick Tourney were never exempt tourney's anyway so having them would not preclude SJU from playing in a exempt Tourney.  In other words they can and have done both.

FYI-Here is a list of these Tourney's.  Interesting looks like the matchup with Pittsburgh at MSG is being counted as exempt.  Exempt simply means that the Tourney only counts as 1 game towards your maximum schedule limit.  So even if you play 2, 3 or 4 games depending on how big the field is it only counts as 1 games towards your maximum number of games allowed.
