2021-2022 Schedule

When the Lapchick tournament started in 1975 it was a lot different than how it ended up as a cupcake city tournament for SJU. At first decent teams were willing to come to NYC for two games for what must have been meager payments and some of the teams that participated in those first ten years were Mich. St,, Ala., Oral Robert’s, Xav., St. Bon.,U Penn and Old Dominion.
After those first ten years teams wouldn’t give up two games and the competition went down.

FYI-Here is a list of these Tourney's.  Interesting looks like the matchup with Pittsburgh at MSG is being counted as exempt.  Exempt simply means that the Tourney only counts as 1 game towards your maximum schedule limit.  So even if you play 2, 3 or 4 games depending on how big the field is it only counts as 1 games towards your maximum number of games allowed.

Some notable BE schools include Butler is in Maui, Marquette is in Charleston, Creighton is at the Paradise Jam, SHU in the Fort Myers Tip Off, Providence will be in NY at the Legends Classic,  UCONN is in Atlantis.https://www.gazellegroup.com/main/gotham/]Gotham ClassicDec. • Pittsburgh (ACC)
 • St. John’s (Big East)
 • Others TBA
Sat., Dec. 18
Pittsburgh vs. St. John’s
Iona vs. Seton Hall (non-exempt)

Yes, there are supposed to be two additional games on campus for both Pitt and STJ as part of this.  Usually the exempts come down to a predetermined final 4. But in this case at the Gotham Classic (I hope the Joker doesn't ruin the whole thing but killing everyone in the arena) it's a predetermined final 2.

I thought we were playing Kansas in addition to playing another Big 12 team in the Big East / Big 12 challenge. We still need another real good high major OOC game

Hosting our own exempted tournament to open the new Belmont arena would have been cool, but I guess the timeline on these things takes a while to pull together.

I guess we will play the lesser ooc games on campus, the higher echelon ooc games and all conference games at either MSG or Belmont Arena. It will be interesting to see how the three home court situation evolves.

i guess

It’s only 1 game at Belmont to open up arena.  Do not plan on playing additional games there next year

You’d think the powers that be would have Dion open Belmont, but no such luck.  I wonder why...

I know it's oddly a home game for us, but what is the official rule about distance and/or when it is gets classified as a neutral site game?

I dont think it goes by distance but number of games played there. Should count as a neutral court. BE tourney and out of conference games at MSG may be a different story.

Will they tell him where or when? No one knows.

I think it comes down to who pays for the rental of the arena and who gets the rights to sell tickets to their fans, irrelevant of distance to the arena

I believe they consider it a home game if a team:

1. Plays at least 4 regular season games there:

and/or

2.  Is part of the team's season ticket package.

There may be other qualifications, too.

St John's is playing at Indiana in the 2021 Gavitt Games per Rothstein

The other matchups

Ohio State - Xavier
Illinois - Marquette
Seton Hall - Michigan
Rutgers - DePaul
Creighton - Nebraska
Michigan State - Butler
Providence - Wisconsin

So we have games against Big Ten, ACC & Big 12 opponents. If we could add a decent SEC  opponent that would give us a nice OOC slate.
