2021-2022 Schedule

Making Plays- sure, there were multiple reasons we didn't make the Tournament, but our poor OOC resume absolutely played a major role. 2 reasons:

1. We had 0 quality wins OOC. It was a total waste of a schedule once we lost to the only decent team in BYU. Compare that to Big East teams who got at-large bids. Nova, Creighton and UConn all had major OOC wins. Yes, it was a weird year, but end of the day the teams who scheduled better still were better positioned than we were. Can't rely on the Big East being as good as it was 2 years ago to bail us out. This poor schedule also arguably hurt our preparation going into Big East play and led to our mediocre conference start.
2. Our OOC NET was awful, because it was a weak schedule where we played mediocre teams too closely. I don't remember what our NET was at the start of Big East play, but I believe it was around 85-100. We were essentially playing catch up with our NET but ran out of BE games. Compare that to the last time where we made the Tournament in 2019. Our NET by the end of OOC was roughly 25, and we still made the Tournament with only an 8-10 Big East record.

Our OOC only hurt us. It provided zero quality wins and tanked our NET. Again, weird year and our OOC schedule isn't the only reason we didn't make the Dance, but it absolutely played a major role. No excuses for next year if we schedule poorly again.

Were we prepared to play quality OOC games? I'm not sure we would have won any of them.

This year, we definitely need some. Posh has a year under his belt, so I think wins would be easier to come by.

L J S A - I agree about this year. As for last year, it's tough to say if we would've been ready, but at least we would've had a chance. When you go 7-1 OOC but it hurts your resume then that's a problem. Seton Hall for instance scheduled very tough, didn't even have a winning OOC record (3-3), but still had a far better NET than we did and were ahead of us on the bubble despite having a very poor Q1 Big East record (much worse than ours). This is how the first NET rankings looked on January 4 (a few games into conference play):

5 Villanova
30 Creighton
44 Seton Hall
46 Xavier
48 UConn
63 Marquette
78 Providence
112 St. John's (NY)
149 Georgetown
155 DePaul
170 Butler

When you're in the 100s early in conference play it's extremely difficult to pull yourself back into the top 50 range. I'm not saying we need to go the Seton Hall route of super difficult scheduling, but we do at least need to keep up with how most other Power teams schedule.

We have always played too many Cupcakes .. we need more Kansas , UNC, Duke  and less St Peters , NJIT, FDU, etc .  I would think even a Gonzaga would like a OOC game at MSG . Why not ?

Why not Iona at MSG?

I love the yearly tradition of everyone thinking making a schedule is as easy as picking up the phone and saying let's play!

Ranks up there with our other time honored traditions of players real heights, local school holiday tournament and the Redmen debate.

Last year COVID hurt non-conference scheduling and also losing the Texas Tech game hurt as well.

I can't believe they can't get into an exempt Tourney this year.

Especially that one from months ago where I said I thought we'd be losing most of our team.

Are we planning to play tough local competition like Molloy?

Hearing rumor of SJU v Kansas at UBS Arena 12/2

That would be great! That game along with the Big 10, Big 12 and Pitt game , should make for a quality OOC schedule.

Apologies if this question was already asked and answered, but are we in any pre-season tournaments next year?

Does not appear so

Zach B confirms

St. John's will host Kansas Dec. 2 in Big 12 showdown, source confirms. Seton Hall hosts Texas. #sjubb #shbb

St. John's-Kansas expected to be first game at new UBS Arena at Belmont. St. John's had pushed for a big opponent, and will get it with Kansas.
