2020 Jets

I think the Jets would be crazy to give up on Darnold. If they are lucky enough to get #1 pick they could get a huge haul for that in a trade combined with the picks they already have and really improve quickly with a new Coaching staff.

Twice in the post game news conference Darnold said we have to adjust better to the other teams adjustments. I think 4 yards in a half makes that pretty obvious.
Only four yards more than I got sitting on my couch.
yeah but if you got up to go to the bathroom or kitchen you got that beat

Nah.

I’ve gotten into this discussion a bunch of times the last couple of days, and the truth is, you can’t pass up on Trevor.

He’s simply too good of a prospect. Trade and get all the picks you want, it’s a terrible decision for all parties involved and let me explain why.

1) from the Jets perspective - they will go down as the team that passed on Trevor Lawrence. If he’s as advertised for some other franchise it’ll be thrown in the Jets face for the next two decades. Even if they can use a haul to improve the team it’s just a risky ass move.

2) from Sam Darnolds perspective - you’re putting Darnold in a horrendous position. I’m sorry but you just are. Every time he has a bad game in the future fans are gonna pivot to the “we could have had Trevor”. The best thing for Darnold at this point is to get traded to one of the teams with aging QBs and give it another shot somewhere else with a fresh start. Setting Sam free is way better for the guy, it just is... and it’s better for the Jets too.

Now one could make the argument it could both ways of Lawrence struggles and Sam is good elsewhere, but the truth is, no one will kill the Jets for taking a prospect like Lawrence. Most complete QB prospect since Luck and Manning. Also, whoever the next head coach is, he’s probably going to want to start fresh with a young QB who hasn’t picked up bad habits playing under the Gase regime. It’s just the way it is.

Also, that game was there for the taking yesterday and Sam Darnold was bad. If he doesn’t want Trevor Lawrence to be a jet, he controls his own destiny. I know he doesn’t have great weapons or coaching or an OLine, but the numbers don’t lie. He’s been bad. If he can’t win a game and we get the first pick the decision is made

That's the conundrum. If Darnold turns out to be Tony Romo part 2, do you trade him to clear the way for a guy who could be the next John Elway?

The part that makes this such a hard decision is Gase. Look how badly he mishandled Tannehill in Miami. Instead of realizing RT's skill set best fit a power running offense with lots of play action and then building that power running attack around him, he instead tried to make RT into Peyton Manning.
Seems he's trying to do the same thing with Darnold and getting the same result.
You can probably get 6 or 7 picks for the top spot in this draft if Lawrence doesn't go back to school. Add that to all the picks you have the next two years and you can rebuild fast with a good GM and coach.
Tough call.

We would be nuts to not get Lawrence but we all know it won't happen even if we get the #1 pick. Because we are the Jets. We can't have nice things, especially on offense. Darnold is damaged goods beyond repair for us. He may very well succeed elsewhere, but not here. If we can't get Lawrence, we have to stick with him and trade down. We need to go all-in on offense for 10 years to even have a shot at competing seriously on a regular basis. Teams like the Chiefs (SB favorites) have 5 or 6 legitimate pro bowl level options at WR, RB, TE. We have 0. We have 2nd and 3rd stringers. Draft burners who blaze past defenses, guys with size for jump balls in the red zone, reliable sure-handed TE's, and some shifty RB's. We might be the most boring football team in the history of the NFL doing the same thing for 20 yrs.

Your blueprint for turning things around seems a bit long at 10 years. If you want to see how to do it in 2-3 years, look at Miami.

Step 1: Hire the right GM and put him in charge of everything football related.
Step 2: GM hires a HC he believes in.
Step 3: HC hires staff he believes in.
Step 4: Trade every player you can who isn't in your long term plans or isn't getting a 2nd contract from you.
Step 5: Find a franchise QB
Step 6: Use Free Agency to fill as many holes as possible with players 27 or younger.
Step 7: Use the draft and all the picks you've collected to build the core of your team.

Good thing for Jets fans is that the QB part, which is the hardest part to get right, is either in your building already, or is available to you in this draft (Lawrence/Fields).
For you to convince me to trade the first pick in the draft and pass on a potential generational talent at QB stuff like this can’t happen. In year 3. It can’t

Great video. Darnold locks onto receivers too often. I think this has gotten worse under Gase. I have no doubt Darnold will succeed elsewhere as has Tannehill when he leaves.

Embrace the pain
So if Jets have the first pick and Lawrence wants to avoid them he can return to school. So Jets suck again next year and get the first pick again after next season and Lawrence still avoids them by returning to school for a 5th season which he can do because this season no one uses up a year of eligibility because of Covid. Only in Jetland kids, only in Jetland. ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) :)

He'll succeed in Indy under Reich.

Wouldn't that be stupid on his part? What if he got a serious legs break, and damaged the nerves in his leg, he'd slip to the 2nd red or possibly 3rd.
I could see him going back to school for one year, but not 2.

Just curious, but what % of top flight college QB's in history have suffered "a serious legs break, and damaged the nerves in his leg"?? I can't think of one guy who was going to be atop pick and fell to the third round because of nerve damage to a leg.

Tua had about as bad an injury as a college QB can have. One that put he's entire career in jeopardy. He was still the 5th pick overall.

Bottom line is, Trevor is driving the bus. Even if we get #1 pick and he enters draft, he can still pull an Eli Manning which is looking more and more likely. Would not commit to being ok with going to the Jets when asked directly. He said "we will see".

He has no reason to commit to any team right now when he’s still playing games for Clemson. He’s giving the same generic media answers every projected first pick does in his last college year. Zion recently said the same kind of stuff. It’s people’s job to make a big deal out of nothing for clicks. He’s already said he plans on it being his last season. If he avoids the Jets it is what it is. But it’s a long way to go before that becomes a concern. Jets have to actually maintain the first pick
