I agree that the days of teams having their defense carry them to a title with an average or below average offense are in the past, at least barring significant rules changes.
But Defense DOES matter.
Going back to 1971, there are only 3 times where the Super Bowl winner had a defense that was in the bottom 1/3rd of the league in Points Allowed.
41 times they had a defense in the top 10.
