2019 Transfers

SMU grad transfer Jimmy Whitt tells me he's receiving interest from Arkansas, Virginia Tech, Gonzaga, Oregon, and Texas A&M. Returning to SMU is also an option.
Whitt to Arkansas. Arkansas to SMU back to Arkansas...

Rodney Howard’s decision to back out of Ole Miss this week came as a bit of a surprise. The Georgia native who spent this year at Legacy Charter in South Carolina committed early to the Rebels and Kermit Davis. With him back on the open market, high-major schools looking to add a big man late are all over him.

On Wednesday night, Howard told me Georgia, Georgia Tech, Illinois, LSU, Miami, Nevada, Pittsburgh, South Carolina, St. John’s, Virginia Tech and Wisconsin had already reached out within hours of him decommitting. He’s already set an official visit to Georgia Tech for May 25-26. Keep an eye on Georgia and South Carolina in this one, too. The Bulldogs were involved the first time around, although he committed shortly after Tom Crean took over, and the Gamecocks have his close friend and Legacy Charter teammate Jalyn McCreary signed already.

No surprise since he is from the state of Georgia and he visited both this weekend. But he will choose from G Tech and Georgia:

Things are going to get interesting in the next couple weeks I think for both Arkansas and St. John's.

Arkansas is currently 2 scholarships over the limit, and Musselman is still bringing guys in for visits and recruiting, so obviously at least 2 guys are going to be asked to transfer, some Arkansas insiders are thinking it could end up being up to 3.

How that relates to St. John's is that some of these guys are going to be CMA's recruits that are in the portal.

Here's my early prediction of likelihood some of the guys that transfer out in order of most likely.

1. Khalil Garland - He's currently on scholarship though has never played for Arkansas, he's had a medical condition related to the heart that very little info has been given on Former top ESPN 100 player. My strong guess is he's very likely to end up transferring and see if he can get cleared by another school or if stays at Arkansas he won't be on scholarship, they'll put him on medical hardship.

2. Gabe Osabouhein - Seen something very odd that he tweeted out the other day, he re-tweeted all the schools that were recruiting him when he came out of high school in 2017. Also, I noticed TJ recently started following him. He's usually very vocal on twitter, and since it was announced CMA was fired thing have been very quiet on his twitter. He was very vocal after CMA was fired that he didn't like the way CMA was treated. A little about his game, he's mostly a defensive player/hustle guy, lead the team in charges, was the best on ball defender, he can legit guard position 1-5, he came off the bench until the last 7 games when he earned a starting spot, not a great offensive player put he shows flashes. IMO, if he transfers out, very likely he ends up here at St. John's if CMA wants and has room for him.

3. Justice Hill - He committed to CMA in the 9th grade and held firm on that commitment. He started off as a 4-star recruit when he was in 9th/10th grade, he never really grew and stayed at about 5'10, that affected his ranking he's a 3-star by most services. He actually graduated early and joined the team this Spring, there was no scholarships available at the time so he walked on for that semester and was promised he'd get his scholarship in the fall (when he was originally suppose to start school). Since Musselman didn't make that promise I could see a situation where he passes on Justice. If that happens, I could see a scenario on staff trying to convince him to come to St. John's, he'd be a good pick-up, although his game is very similar to recent commitment Jonathan McGriff.

4. Ethan Henderson - Former top 100 player, didn't see much of the court his first year, very skinny kid for a center with ton of athletic ability. There's been questions about his motor, if he transfers out, I'm not sure staff would purse him. It's possible, but I wouldn't put it as likely.

5. Jalen Harris - At one point last year he lead the nation in assist-turnover, think he ended up being 7th in the nation when the season ended. He's a very good PG as far as protecting the ball and getting others involved and controlling the game. His weakness is shooting, think he ended up as a 12% shooter from 3 pointer. He took a lot of criticism for that. He's already sat out a year, not sure exactly how it would work if he transferred again. But, if he does transfer out I think it's likely staff pursues him, TJ recruited him and staff really likes him.

Looks like Osabuohien is from Toronto, so we would be an easier trip home. And he'd be a good practice player during redshirt year.

Harris would be perfect if he were able to immediately transfer.

I'm clearly biased here, but NCAA should probably let a kid play immediately if the coach he committed to is fired and the new coach forces him out, especially if he recommits to former coach at his new school. . .

Interesting list MP and great point below by LJSA about potential eligibility waivers in a case like this.
We’ve got 3 ‘ships to give I believe.
Harris is very intriguing given the uncertainty of getting D. Thornton away from the Zags at this point.
We can hope things break well for these kids and for St. John’s in this game of musical chairs.

That is not biased. That is logical.

That has always been one of the biggest peeves of all fans, and it is something the NCAA can fix. This gives something to the kids, especially those who are not super elite recruits.

The majority of those kids will not play pro ball, and picked the school because the family trusted that coach to watch their son through 4 years of college.

As a parent, nothing is more important than making certain your child has a strong and positive influences. College coaches are that.

More families of college kids should rattle cages to allow a no sit transfer in situations when the coach who recruited that kid is no longer at the school.

Oh and by the way LJSA, in short, I agree with you.

Source: Alabama wing Tevin Mack will transfer. Averaged 9.0 PPG & 3.3 RPG this past season. Will be eligible to play elsewhere right away.

Not a need

Obviously what Thornton decides to do is the operating 'trigger' on how the Staff proceeds to fill the PG spot.
Not much to do, except to wait...

A kid from my neck of the woods. His stats was a bit uneven during the season, as he certainly looked better during his sophomore year at Texas than he did this past season. I recall him coming up big against Kentucky for a big win in January (I believe it was the same day we had the comeback win versus Georgetown in DC).

Not sure if he wanna come back home or what.

He plays the same position as Heron and Figgy - not sure why he'd want to come here.

Sure. In the same vein, I presume it's ok with you if people respond to your posts?

In a perfect world SJU would pursue ONLY players that fit a specific need AND are talented enough to play immediately.

This is not a perfect world.

Simply put if I give you a choice between landing a big man who is a complete project or a wing player who can start or play serious minutes off the bench IMMEDIATELY (even though you have solid wings) in my book you go with the wing player period. Let the rest sort itself out.
