He always did... he wasn’t the problem.

Good for Verne Troye.

But the over reliance on transfers which often are other people’s problems and his Zero contribution to the X and Os side of equation will not be missed in long run with Macon Cleveland and possibly DeMeo on board. They are all more rounded assistants. IMHO.

Don't get me wrong - Matt was a great asset to St John's
But he was a one trick pony - a recruiter
Macon and DeMeo are well rounded - excellent recruiters and can also coach the game

The Matt/Will Wade connection always rubbed me wrong way. Wade is a total sleaze bag.

Still quite a few immediate eligible players out there. Not dire. Yet

https://247sports.com/Season/2019-Basketball/TransferPortal/?eligibility=Immediate

Then again there are few names we've seen not listed either. So not 100% the bible.
Kid name Tucker, 3 stars went to Arkansas Little Rock,CMAs territory., a couple other 3 star point guards., It would be great if we could snag one.
But I keep being told by people on this board that AAC is a bad conference hence schools like Memphis and UCONN and Cincy and Wichita St can't be good programs because of conference affiliation...

Houston too & UCF improving.

All those schools are not in Conference USA

Post corrected, AAC.

Regarding Derryck Thornton, I would gladly take him without any reservation. In fact, I think he is our best target.

That said, in the interest of going in eyes wide open, this post represents the general sentiment on the USC board.

Fight On, DT. Always a Trojan and glad he got his degree. Even though he made some really poor decisions and played selfish at times, he always played hard. Hope he finds a team/system which needs him to be the ball dominant guard he wants to be.

Now the question that everyone wants to know the answer to... is there room for Boogie?

A PG like Thornton (along with LJ's return) turns us from a .500 team to an instant NCAA bubble team. I hope it happens.

Any room for Precious? Lol.
Penny is assembling either the team that can't miss or the 'collapse' of the decade.
And perhaps a transfer portal hotbed next Spring.

Dunno about our chances to get Thornton, but he's a solid PG playmaker and TJ may be able to improve the other aspects of his game.
And agree that if LJ and Heron return, St. John's could be very competitive next season--in stark contrast to the doom and gloom a few short weeks ago.
LJ's 'return' is key.
We shall see.

Hyperbole like this make for great posts and discussion but really have no basis in predicting real results for this team. Nobody knows LJ or Herons decisions, still have roster spots to be filled and coaching spots as well.Even then we’ve never seen Coach in a competitive situation, let alone a BE game. I want success as much as anyone but many times posters get carried away with unjustified optimism on this site. Hope you are right though re Thornton and projected success.

Some of us saw his UAB team lose at Alumni to our ex-NIT champs with Marcus Hatten. Smart ball movement and tough D ate his lunch.

They'll be good, but what Penny's assembled isn't great enough to live up to either of those labels, at least not to a non-Memphis fan.

How long does MA wait ,think he has to recruit as if LJ is not returning. We ca not let him think that we can’t love without him. yes, I want him back but the longer he takes to decides is hurt the team and coach

K fair point, LJSA. But while Penny’s class may not be on par with the Fab 5 or some of KYs or Duke’s classes, it’s more than ‘good’: Re 247: #s 1, 48, 56, 98, 107, now Tucker the #2 Grad transfer and they’re a finalist for Precious #14....more than good , imo and still working.
