2019 Coaching Changes

nothing will happen until the garden is in unison with the "Fire Mullin" chants.....no major changes this year and you will hear it

this is all sad because Mullin (I believe) came back for all the right reasons. He is and will always be the greatest johnnie to wear the uniform. he came back to restore the image and brand ( although i thought Lav was fine). Now, the experiment is over. Now that Matt is gone it will turn ugly. We say thank you to Mully for his efforts (no pun intended) but its time to revamp the staff starting with the top. Mully should go out on top. I improved every year argument and step down. He can use that for his next gig ( in cali I'm sure). Everyone saves face, now is the time. Mully leaves on his terms, leaves on a good note, and MC can bring in his own staff. The time is now ( or maybe once Duke gets knocked out) to start the changes. Just my opinion but i know for a fact MANY johnnie fans share my thoughts

This whole revamping of assistants but not the head coach which is our real problem, makes no sense to me. We aren’t going to be landing much better players with Mullin as a lame duck and everybody knows it. We have to start recruiting relationships from day 1 now, and what exactly is going to change next season? This whole thing is frustrating.

Very well said totally agree!

Mullin does some stuff really well (e.g. builds confidence although sometimes too much, seems to be well liked by his kids). Leveraging those skills could make him a success but requires strong staff around him and, just as importantly, a change of style. Would also need to make a commitment to being on the recruiting trail.

In four years on the job, Mullin has not made a commitment to be on the recruiting trail
I would be surprised to see him change his philosophy at this point
Also, 4 years into a 6 year contract, he is becoming (as Marcus said) a lame duck coach
Many coaches negatively recruit against other schools
Mullin's status as a soon to be lame duck can only hurt us

Don’t doubt it and can’t disagree re: lack of commitment...just don’t believe SJ will fire him and, as a result, we’ll have to make changes within those parameters...think it’ll come down to the conversation between Cragg and Mullin re: the need for changes....if Open to change, we’ll have leverage what he does best and fill in the gaps

This has no chance of working out long term. None. Think about being someplace like Duke for 30 years and then getting put in charge of this Clown Show. The only question now is how does Cragg attempt to phase in change, and can CM play ball long enough to not get himself fired before his contract runs out. That's it.

Effecting transitional change is always tricky if that is what is going on here.

This gave me a laugh! Yes......we are a "clown show".
Good to see list of some good names, but often a guy not on list comes out of blue with recruiting ties to surprise you. Would love Ed P for X&O guy to also help recruit, but very interested in attracting someone who could move needle on attracting solid recruits quickly. We’ll see soon enough.
You must have a ‘good name’ in mind, Paultz. Lol.
Interesting.
Hopefully, the Staff ‘re-constitutes’ soon to be able to manage the roster and recruiting process.
We shall see, but I like the overall list and I’m hopeful.

I agree with your sentiments, Cappy.
But I don’t see St. John’s having the ‘will’ or the $$$’s to force Chris out.
That move has to come from Chris—perhaps resisting the pressure from MC to fire both GSJ and Mitch—and then, there’s still the problem about the $$$’s.
We shall see, but I’m just hoping for dramatic Staff changes to be announced soon and we’ll go from there.

Agree 3. We need a change in systems/ style to at least include ‘rebounds’ as an option! Lol.
IF Chris also hit the recruiting trail that’d be great, but given his Cali off-season lifestyle, seems unlikely.
But ya neva know.
We can hope.

Two schools of thought on the current situation:
1)Matt leaving is blessing in disguise because it could lead to a major staff overhaul and allow for better recruiting and roster management. Some nice names currently being discussed.
2)It's a year late these changes should have happened a year ago this is just putting lipstick on a pig. Chris is a lame duck after this next year and these staff changes simply won't have enough of an immediate impact on team next year and chances are they will all be looking for a new job in a year anyway so why delay the inevitable. Move on at this point.

Does that about cover it?

I am actually in camp #2 but short of Chris stepping away number 1 is the next best thing....

People wanting St. Jean fired are nuts. Mitch does nothing, ok. Ratt A only recruited and didn’t even do that well. St. Jean led a team with a 6’7 jump shooter at center and to the dance. He will only get better.

Agree #1 could reap dividends you noted with right choice to fill MA’s spot. I have a certain degree of confidence that will happen.

Or 3) Cragg already knows who he wants to replace Chris, and the assistants he wants to influence Chris to hire would be guys mystery coach would want/keep on staff when he makes his appearance in 2020-21. I prefer this one, because some cloak and dagger intrigue would be pretty awesome.

I can't recall a single college program, or pro for that matter, where change was initiated through replacing support staff and keeping the coach. I'm sure it happened, but just not the way business is done. Replacing departing staff is of course necessary, but here the discussion of needed staff changes is beyond the norm.

It's nice to have an AD who is plugged into the sport and is knowledgeable of the coaching fraternity. Let's hope he can make the changes needed for Mullin's staff.
