2019 Coaching Changes
How about Mullin does some recruiting.
Nah.....that would just be too weird.

It’s Matt’s time to pursue his connection with his former boss - let him go with warm wishes for how he helped SJU - we will survive his loss and my heart is inclined to believe we are in good hands with Mike Cragg.
We all knew the staff needed to be changed and augmented - and “ people get ready ” (Chambers Brothers) there’s a change a coming.
Going to be better my heart of hearts says...
Hopeful
Next year can be more successful and satisfying than this Winter of our Discontent.
2019-20 bring it on!
Let’s go Storm
Pecora, Pinckney and Hsu would be a major score at this point considering all that’s gone on. A guy like Phelps would be good also. A Queens kid who maybe can be the successor. Who knows, let’s just hope the program lands on its feet after all this upheaval. We just have to trust that Cragg has a handle on all this.
Pecora is also a good recruiter. Brought Paschall to Fordham.

Good to see list of some good names, but often a guy not on list comes out of blue with recruiting ties to surprise you. Would love Ed P for X&O guy to also help recruit, but very interested in attracting someone who could move needle on attracting solid recruits quickly. We’ll see soon enough.

One could see Marc Hsu @MarcHsu21 either being the second recruiting shark added to #Nebraska or heading home to St.John’s. He’s been instrumental in landing players at challenging places like Western Kentucky, NM St., , Cal-State Bakersfield & Binghamton. #SJUBB
I've never heard of this guy but I'm already sold.

The buck stops with Coach Mullin who is entering his 5th season at StJohn’s.

It is his responsibility to deal with the facts that exist.

Any failure or success at this point is with him.

Lol you’re right I was reactionary AF and was exaggerating. Think we all know MITCH is the most replaceable. My point was definitely that Matt leaving isn’t a negative in my eyes
I was going to agree with you on Matt until I reached this post because I completely forgot about Mitch. I guess if he did anything my memory would have been jogged sooner.

Anyway, Matt is expendable/non-expendable all at once. The other three literally don't know anything about how recruiting is supposed to function, but at the same time, I'm better with the X's and O's than Matt is. He literally does shit on that front.

Get the right guys in here and maybe the damage from losing our only recruiter can be minimized. Phelps is interesting. He probably absorbed a lot from Smith, and could probably get up to speed pretty quickly on recruiting NY/NJ. Plus he actually has real Cali connections, unlike our staff that was 75 percent Cali.

I don't think any of those mentioned will materialize. Especially Tom the Maven Pecora.

The Jesuit Giglio....
I feel like Matt hit the ceiling here, and the timing of this is actually pretty decent. Put Mitch back to whatever the special assistant role he had in year one, and hire two of the guys on that list, and I think we're in pretty good shape.
Why keep him on the staff at all?

What has he done in 4yrs, but he'll start in his 5th year? Good luck with that.
If Matt goes, clean house and hire 3 new assistants
Don't want Pecora - his best are in the rear view mirror
So were George Blaney's and Ralph WIlliards.

Sorry to disappoint you, but I'm hearing he's at the top of the list ... and someone who always wanted to be at St. John's (albeit as a HC).

Thanks for that, red.
I don’t have a problem with Pecora. At least he’s an experienced college HC and will have better talent to work with on an x&o basis with the Johnnies. (At least I hope the talent is better next year than what he’s been used to! Lol.)
Then we need 2 more ACs, but likely get 1, since my gut says Mitch returns. (I hope I’m wrong about that.)

I think we're stuck with Mitch. Personally, I'd like to retain GSJ since he seemed to be the most engaged coach during the games, he actually gives a shit and isn't here just to collect a paycheck...plus the players from what I've heard really connect with him and like him a lot. Ultimately if it were up to me, I'd have GSJ, Hsu and Phelps as the assistants.

Everyone is talking about assistant coaching changes. As I see it there is very little hope of things improving until the guy who put this staff together is gone.

I will tell a quick story a few years ago my older son was playing travel, we met Pecora, i met him a few times very nice guy and you know where we met at the local AAU circuit, think we need a guy like that! Just my observation, wants to be here check, knows the local landscape check and former head coach check.not a bad assistant....
