2019 Coaching Changes

Actually a big did show up on Campus his name was Femi but Mullin couldn’t be bothered to be there that day so he went to DePaul.

People wanting St. Jean fired are nuts. Mitch does nothing, ok. Ratt A only recruited and didn’t even do that well. St. Jean led a team with a 6’7 jump shooter at center and to the dance. He will only get better.
We limped into the ‘play-in’ game and lost that.
I think that proves our ‘system’ doesn’t work with any roster we can hope to have and needs to be changed, so we need an AC that can craft a ‘new’ / different system, assuming Chris returns, which I think proves out.
I understand Marillac's point but St Jean's system will only yield high results with top level players and neither he nor CM showed any ability to modify their styles to meet their player's strengths. Last year was a high water mark for the talent level of the roster, despite the poor positional/size balance, and with the downgrade in talent next year the St Jean/Mullin system is very likely to deliver results in line with their first 3 years. For that reason I wouldn't miss him but also doubt that CM is going to let his replacement put in a new system better suited to the roster.
You’re probably right austour.
I base my long-shot hopes on the new hires and the pressure on Mullin to ‘go along’ with revisions, but I’m likely wrong.
I hate to say it, but if Mullin is stubborn and won't go along, he should be fired

What “system”’did you see this season? Hang on and pray with a 6’7 center and 6’6 195 PF? That’s clearly not what he wants going forward. Steere is built the hulk and they went out and got 6’10 Manuel as well with Roberts, Keita, and Earlington on the roster.
Yeah, can't wait to see those guys playing ree form 5 out standing outside the arc and jacking up the occasional or not that occasional three.
I think it’s pretty obvious that we played “5 out” out of necessity. Mullin would have loved to have a big man to post and draw double teams. It opens up the whole court offensively.
Would have loved it so much he couldn't be bothered to recruit one. They don't just show up on campus.
So you know for a fact Mullin couldn't have bothered to recruit a big?
Let’s not get into a ‘he said/she said’ rut, but there’s probably a tape of visits by Bigs last off-season and/or a record of who on the Staff was there to greet them.
‘Nuff said.
Let’s just hope Mullin and his ‘new’ staff are up to the challenge of building a competitive roster for next year.

The Femi thing still really pisses me off.

The system by GSJ and Mullin works... when we're shooting lights out. Too bad that could be said about any system.

I hear you Mark, but doubt that’ll happen.
Seems like he will have to replace 2/3s of his staff.
Let’s see who the new hires are and if things change for the better.
Here’s hoping...

Imho, disappointing results came primarily from being too small, having no bench and players not bringing it every night rather than from any "system" we employed. Hopefully we will be bigger and deeper next year although that obviously remains to be seen. As for Mullin being willing to (i) listen to new staff members and (ii) learn from hard lessons of this year only time will tell. I'll wait and see and hope for the best.

Very accurate post and in addition for the first time in his coaching career Coach Mullin has an AD looking closely at what he is doing and or not doing. Many other programs at SJU do well and I have to believe that the real purpose Mike Cragg was hired is to improve the men’s bball program which is the biggest revenue producing sport by far at SJU. A coach being absent during key recruiting periods will be noticed and hopefully not tolerated. As Paultzman has often pointed out Cragg is observing , taking notes, reflecting and hopefully will act when the time is right.

Should have recruited a serviceable Big. But its tough to recruit when you only have one recruiter covering the world.
Even tougher when that one recruiter doesn’t know a thing about basketball. Hopefully that will change with his replacement. Hsu would run laps around Matt.

Matt always struck me as more of a walk guy

amazing a recruiter who doesn't know anything about basketball, is being recruited by a successful coach. wonder what he knows that you don't.

If it’s true that Mullin is not recruiting, there is no question in my mind that he should be let go in light of the fact that he is making over 2 million dollars a year! He should read his job description!

Someone had exchange w/ Mullin's wife about his effort and engagement and recruiting

..she makes it seem he actively recruits and is always on the clock for the program

No doubt a lot of work.....like non stop, 24/7. I know, I witness it. There is never a disconnect .....✌?

Hsu is a quality candidate for sure. Of course there may be another guy in the mix media guys have not yet identified, happens often obviously.

While you nailed it regarding our lack of depth and ‘bigs’ I disagree a little bit, NCJ, about why the ‘system’ failed.
It’s the Warriors’ system that did not work because we had neither the talent nor the depth to make it go.
That system calls for great shooter, plus mobile/athletic ‘bigs’ who can run and shoot with less emphasis on rebounds or boxing out or typical
ABC fundamentals.
We did not have the shooters nor the ‘mobile’ PFs for that ‘system’ to work.
Few college teams do.
Hence, we need to change to a different system that is in better sync with th capabilities of the roster.

Pretty sure it is the only revenue producing sport.
Think the 24/7 refers to 24 days per year, 7 minutes per day.
Lol. That’s funny Bama!

Interesting, RedstormNC.
That view sure the heck runs contrary to the prevailing view on this Board!
Gotta laugh.

I think redken commented that he was hearing Pecora was one of the leaders for an AC spot. Is Hsu the other...and /or a ‘mystery’ candidate?
Hope we have better luck with the ‘mystery’ AC than we did with snaring last year’s ‘Mystery’ Big!
Lol.
