2019 Coaching Changes
Daniels and Goodman both reporting with others that Matt A will be hired next week to join Hoiberg staff at Nebraska..ouch
Worst kept secret. Regardless of what you think of Matt the fact is Chris put this staff together. If he doesn't seize this opportunity to overhaul staff then he's run out of excuses.
Quite frankly he may have already but the fact is a coaching change is unlikely to happen so this is next best thing.

Too bad an assistant coach leaving doesn't have to sit out a year, like players.

Goodman
Fred Hoiberg is also expected to hire St. John's assistant Matt Abdelmassih, sources told @Stadium. Abdelmassih was with Hoiberg at Iowa State and did much of the heavy lifting with recruiting.

Adam Zagoria

No news from @mabde33 yet, but I'm told it could come tomorrow or Monday re: a move to Nebraska w/ Fred Hoiberg.

Chris Mullin will need an ace recruiter to fill his shoes as Matt recruited most if not all of the current team.

Evan Daniels
Sources: Fred Hoiberg’s deal with Nebraska is for 7 years. The deal with worth more than $3M a year
yeah but now its in the press. going to be hard to change a staff with only 2 years left on your contract and haven't been extended.
Maybe but that's not my problem that's his.

He chose this. There were 1000 different ways he could have gone after the Slice debacle 3 years ago and he chose this staff and strategy. That's on him. Period.

If he's staying then fix it.

Blow it up. The only reason to keep Mullin around was to keep Matt in the fold as well. Now we have arguably the worst staff in Major D1 basketball. Matt kept the program together. Where is this next magical recruiter coming from. Mullin has no interest in recruiting. He no-showed the Femi visit which may have been the difference btwn losing to ASU and winning a tourney game or two. Also, who now leaves the program due to Matt leaving? Heron's only connection to the program was Matt. Mullin never even spoke to him before he committed. Does Simon leave now? What about Tabor, assuming Matt A is the only coach with a real relationship with him?

Hire Pitino with the promise that Little Richard can take over in a couple years if he wants it. If not Pitino then Cluess. He's on the older side, but he's a winner. Maybe he can bring Grasso with him as a successor in training (prob unlikely)

Matt is making a smart move, I don't blame him at all. I've seen a lot of people over the past month or two saying Matt has been "distant". Well, this is why. Mullin should already have a replacement lined up, but I personally wouldn't make that bet.

Totally agree. Smart move. We're going to take a step back next year. Very unlikely Mullin gets extended, so Matt would end up being a lame duck after next season. He would've landed on his feet, but can't turn down the Neb opportunity for several reasons. Now he has at least 5 years of job security at good money, working under someone Matt has a high affinity for and work history with. No brainer move on Matt's part. Thank you Matt for all you did rebuiilding this program to a tournament caliber team. You will be missed.
Everybody loves harping on the gloom and doom. Didn’t see anybody note Zach’s comment that he expects Heron and Simon to return. If that happens, we should be very competitive next year.

Resolve the Matt situation quickly and bring in an impact immediately eligible transfer and we’re in business. A long term solution it may not be, but at least some cause for mild optimism amidst the Armageddon that some have prognosticated.
Hey Boo, I’m ready to refill my glass to ‘half-full, but truth is we need more than to have Heron & Simon back and not lose Mack, ‘somehow’ get that elusive Grad Transfer, and replace Matt.
We need ‘at the very least’ a solid x&o coach to teach a ‘new’ system, because Mullin’s does not work at the college level.
And that’d mean we’d still have Mitch and not a 2nd recruiter, but hey if we get those additions maybe next year might be decent...not with the ‘potential’ 2018-19 had, but ‘decent’.
An NIT bid.
Maybe.

What stud recruiter/AC are we going to get since Mullin is basically a lame duck? The top candidates aren't going to find this an appealing situation.

Seven years of security instead of possibly being out of a job in one or two. And no sucking up during an exit interview with new coach to see if he'll keep you on if you don't already have another job lined up.

But there are ACs out there without jobs like Tony Chiles who would come here.
My question is, since this has been ‘in the press’ for over a week, has Chris reached out to ‘any’ AC candidates?

From Zach: Abdelmassih did virtually all of it for them, and they haven’t had anyone recruiting since season ended. #sjubb

This is infuriating to read. Mullin needs to step down.

Absolutely should, but I doubt it.

That’s gross negligence on Mullin’s part. Gross.
Tony Chiles, Rasheen Davis etc.

Dial them up....quickly
Funny, couldn’t remember Davis’s first name so left him out of an earlier post.
Lol.
But there are good ACs out there, jobless, who would come here.
Go get them, hopefully more than 1 (which I highly doubt), ASAP.
The most realistic scenario imo, is we replace Matt and that’s it—but it must be soon, NOT 3 weeks or more from now.
If Matt announces Monday—get his replacement inked Tuesday.

Gawd, I hate to stomp on Mullin and I try not to, but if our perceptions are accurate, criticism of how he manages his HC duties are justified.
Just hoping, it breaks at least ‘okay’ for the program in the coming days.
