2019 Coaching Changes
My questions are: What is happening behind closed doors about the state of the program: the coaching staff, departures/replacements; the roster, departures/replacements?
If Matt is indeed ‘gone’, is Mullin seeking out at least 1 recruiter to replace him?
Are talks ongoing with the players?
And a statement: I thought Mullin would meet with his Staff early this week and then meet with the AD.
What’s the status with that?
What is going on with the program?
I believe individual player/HC meetings took place this week and assume staff meetings also occurred.

Arizona guy. Maybe he's a U of A choice?

You really think changes are going to be made based on what people on this board think?

He has passed on jobs of similar ilk in past years. So not sure he is eager to leave Moraga.

Also he ran afoul of the NCAA recently, not deadly serious, but they did sanction SMC.

If Mark Few can stay at Gonzaga thru all of the openings that have occurred at UCLA and Arizona over the last decade then anything is possible.

For starters, looks like Mullin will be returning.
We know Matt’s not recruiting now. If it is indeed true that nobody is recruiting now for SJU, I say fire the whole staff and start over.
Yes, it is absolutely plausible that no one is recruiting for St. John's right now. As you wish for us to return to relevance and live in the top quarter of the Big East Standing, just let that sink in.
If Matt goes, we should blow the whole thing up and hire Pitino, who would be a perfect fit. I'm sure he's dying for a D1 job. St. John's is a great place to come back to. Started in the Big East and can end his career here. Themes of asking for penance and acts of atonement. Catholic forgiveness of sins. He would have us in the Elite Eight in two years. Can't write a story much better than that. The only downside is, Little Richard probably takes over when he's ready to step down.
So you want to get rid of an entire coaching staff and completely start over, just because an assistant coach leaves? That's an absolutely fantastic message to send to any potential future head coaches!! Come coach at our school. You can hire your own staff, but if any of your other coaches leave, we are going to get rid of you and start over.

I understand your point, but that's not the case here. No one else is recruiting other than the assistant coach that is supposedly leaving.

I'm sure any prospective head coach would totally understand it based on that particular scenario.

I think Bennett has been slightly more tempted to leave. Also think Few reached a point years ago where he knows he will always win big where he is and eventually break through. Plus he's not a city boy and can do all his hunting and fishing nearby.

Pretty sure Bennett wanted the job in the past, so went hunting. Found this summary on his candidacy:

Interesting comment on Fox too. Whoops.

Interesting thought. Always though UA would go more sexy. but maybe sexy isn't what's needed there for time being. Plus Bennett has won for a long time . . . unlike that terrible Fox hire at Cal.

Can anybody on here verify if ANYONE on staff has been recruiting during the past week? Such a ridiculous question to even ask. Sometimes I feel like 95% of posters on here would put in more recruiting efforts than Mullin, GSJ, and Mitch if they had the same job title. That is what annoys me about the staff more than anything else.

Which kid is going to annoy you? The one who gets C/Ds but studies, or the one who gets the same grades but doesn't study?

Nobody knows that but many will default to answering no because we haven’t made any lists.

This is a busy 10 days for Mullin. At least one change will almost certainly have to be made with the coaches, a few current players will have to be re-recruited, and there will have to be a few difficult conversations.

I inartfully posted that. I meant that once Matt leaves, that will start the ball rolling. Sorry for the confused post.

Matt will be replaced by Tim Hardaway

As much as Lav wasn't a good coach, I do miss going into offseasons excited for next year with lots of highly rated recruits. The only coaching issue was that Dunlap left because the consensus was that he was a pretty good coach. We all slept at night knowing the coaches were at least trying their best and they were very visible out there recruiting. Now we are a part-time job apparently. Can we be the bride and not a bridesmaid?
If I remember correctly, Lavin didn’t recruit much his last year knowing his fate.
Yes, correct...just meant the first few years.
Exactly Lavin's engine definitely slowed down after the cancer and Cap's death. That said he did have a top 100 commitment on the books when fired but given how much was graduating there wasn't enough there to use that as an excuse to keep him if the administration was otherwise motivated.

To be pragmatic about this unless and until there are more departures next year's scholarships are all accounted for with 13 players signed and committed and only 1 even has to sit out for the first semester. Ponds and Clarke out, Mack and Manuel in and all the transfers active. I tend to agree that Mullin is not going anywhere and that roster is going to require a bit more coaching acumen so it'll be test time for the remaining or rejigged staff. Only 2 seniors on next year's team as well. Now this will likely all change and how rapidly STJ responds to those changes as they happen, especially as it pertains to the staff and recruiters, over the next 10 days will speak volumes of who is in charge, who has BG's ear, and if and how the program will transition to one more accurately reflecting a high major basketball program.

Awesome, let's add another coach who won't want to recruit. Sounds like a plan.

They've already moved a La-Z-Boy recliner into his new office.

I'm willing to bet at least least 2 of Simon, Trimble, Williams Roberts, or Earlington transfer out. No way all of them stay.

Plus, will guys like Mack and Manuel still come here if Matt A is not?

I dred that type of thing after the Mitch debacle. Who in the administration in their right mind would sign off on such a plan?
