BREAKING: Alabama has hired Buffalo's Nate Oats as its next head basketball coach, per @Greg_Byrne.
Damn!
Have to assume Mullin is coming back at this point, otherwise he'd be screwing over St. John's. Other schools are getting straight to business and soon there won't be any good candidates left.
I think Oates is a good coach and all, but I doubt he would have wanted to come here, and also doubt SJU admin would want him. Yes, he did coach in the state of NY, but 7 hours away from NYC, and he is originally from Wisconsin. I doubt SJU would consider someone who wasn't a proven great coach, and had no NYC ties.
I'm not so sure. I think we could have matched whatever Bama was offering. They aren't a highly respected basketball program, despite improvements in recent years.
I agree Buffalo is far away from NYC, but Alabama is a lot further away.
Anyways, no reason to think about it any longer as he is gone. On to the next candidates...
Bama just fired a coach making 3.5 million per with a negotiated buyout that was at 8 million so imagine they would be willing to go even higher for next coach and if someone goes after Oates if he does well there they will more than match any offer.
