2019 Coaching Changes

What do folks think of Avery Johnson/ Alabama’s former coach?
Probably not taking a job as an assistant. Seems like he recruited decent talent.

We also haven't forced a change that was needed years ago to assistants. We also knew years ago we needed bigs and that never happened. We know what needs to be done but it's not being done. I'd say that's similar to holding a program hostage. Especially with rumors that the effort is minimal but Mullin still wants to coach here.
I trust Cragg has smarts to evaluate the program and make appropriate decisions. He is here a short time btw. Let’s see what he thinks. Our opinions are not going to move the needle anyway.
Well said, Paultz. I'm as guilty as anybody in terms of venting my frustrations, but at the end of the day nobody knows what Cragg is thinking right now. Maybe he's a fan of Mullin and thinks a few staff tweaks will do the trick. Maybe he doesn't think Mullin is the right man for the job, but he's handcuffed from making a change until after 2019-'20. Right now, none of us know and none of us seemingly have any power to change it. I guess just let it play out and hope for the best.

I mean, let's be honest for a second. We haven't seen an NCAA Tournament win in close to 20 years. Is another year really going to make a difference at this point?
When you're my age, yes!

Our “Bama Fan” must be happy I assume.

Damn!

Have to assume Mullin is coming back at this point, otherwise he'd be screwing over St. John's. Other schools are getting straight to business and soon there won't be any good candidates left.

I think Oates is a good coach and all, but I doubt he would have wanted to come here, and also doubt SJU admin would want him. Yes, he did coach in the state of NY, but 7 hours away from NYC, and he is originally from Wisconsin. I doubt SJU would consider someone who wasn't a proven great coach, and had no NYC ties.

There's always Pitino...LOL

Regarding Pitino...

He'd be a terrible choice because the school would be heavily monitored for NCAA violations (somebody referenced earlier that RI inquired about him and were told this). I don't know if St. John's is dirty, but it seems like the vast majority of high major teams are. In other words, don't go expecting 5 stars to suit up for Pitino at St. John's like they did for Louisville. Instead, we might end up with a bunch of 3 stars and coaching them up would be really tough. Pitino without his high level recruits would be a shell of his former self.

There's a reason no other D1 programs have taken a chance on him after all these years. He's an incredibly risky hire but for some reason a lot of people don't see that.

Edit: this wasn't directed at you Fordham (since I think you said that in jest and I read after posting). I'm just surprised by how much he is mentioned here. He may soon be target #1 on Redmen.

Johnson: 75-62
Mullin: 59-73

Same 4 year time frame. And Johnson was fired. That's having standards. Close to 20 wins all 4 years. They just went out and got Oats. Watch Hurley go to UCLA next. After this year, watch Cluess be the best option or Masiello. Then watch UConn and Bama get better. After a while it's not just bad luck, just dumb hires and not being aggressive or having high standards. Let's hope Cragg pulls a rabbit out of his hat.
Man I think he should’ve held out for a better job but a great hire for Alabama
I was just telling another poster I was speaking to when he broke the news to me that I was shocked Oats would go that far south. But it's a fantastic hire for them, and Oats probably knows that if he wins big there, any Big 10 jobs that open will come calling for him.

Mike Rhoades of VCU. Just 2 years at VCU, but had taken over a mess at Rice and began to build them and now 2 years at VCU and they won their first outright A10 title.

Keep an eye on him, he's going places if not this year...

Happy for Bama yes but if things don't work out with Mullie would have liked him here. That said there are few sure things as far as coaches go but have to like the job he has done at Buffalo and seem to remember reading a Juco list where 3-4 top Jucos were signed by Buffalo so he probably would have had continued success there.

Any chance Matt McMahon from Murray State leaves this year? Great young coach who wouldn't cost an arm and a leg if we were to pursue him in case things don't work out with our current staff. I think he's the guy I would want.

I'm not so sure. I think we could have matched whatever Bama was offering. They aren't a highly respected basketball program, despite improvements in recent years.

I agree Buffalo is far away from NYC, but Alabama is a lot further away.

Anyways, no reason to think about it any longer as he is gone. On to the next candidates...
