2019 Coaching Changes

Does anyone know about when we will start to hear players plans? I know typically the staff will meet with each player regarding their future and the program.

I want some of the dominoes to start falling so we have a better idea of where the program is. So much speculation and just one of two defections or confirmations can sway the health of the program.
Figueroa, Steere, and Caraher will be here. Wow, good thing we'll be able to fill in 10 holes via transfer market thanks to Ma . . .
Eli Wright as well?
Good point. I actually think Eli will be decent for us, so I apologize for neglecting him.

Could Louie C. influence Chris on his assistant coach selections?

I dont know maybe it is me, but Cragg raised a ton of money while at Duke, tens of millions to bring back from the dead the Duke football program! He knows it takes money to make money! Who cares what CM buyout is really? Pay him, part ways, bring in a reformed Rick Pitino and then we can play more games in the garden and sell out! What alumni with deep pockets wouldnt step up donations? I am not donating another nickel for CM or another bonehead hire! That includes Cluess, Oates or any other high risk hire! We need a homerun hire, someone who has done it before and hires former players and builds a legacy and a program! Duke, UNC, have former players on staff all the time! We nedd to build a winner now, not another maybe, what if, rebuild again! Its time to stop being a bottom feeder! We are NYC and we need to finally act like fans of a winning tradition. Pitino is available, did his penance, and as catholics do we need to forgive, and let Pitino come and do his magic!!!!

I think you may have finally convinced me..too bad I have no say

Thanks, but I am not getting any younger, and went to school with some of the greats at SJU and am tired of hearing how we suck! Its amazing UNC fans have been in my ear all year long that we need Pitino! They care about SJUBB more than our own fans! We sit here and debate Cluess, or Oats, or Hurley, all are high risk! We are SJUBB one of the top 10 programs historically!! Basketball you spend money to make money!! All I hear is how broke the school is? Then where did the school get the millions to hire a Texas based consulting co.? Last time when Lavin was fired, I would say Barnes or Auburns coach now, and was told they sucked, but Barnes has no top kids and is still dancing and so is Auburn! Time for us to start acting like fans of the mecca of college hoops again! Demand change!!

I was told dont mention Bruce Pearl name back then, well he is in the sweet 16. Both Barnes and Pearl were avail back then, and Pitino is available right now!

I certainly hope not.

If the admin wouldn't sign off on Mike Rice, then Pitino will never step foot on the campus. The admin would rather having a losing program than risk tarnishing the reputation of the university, or end up without a program at all. There are no quick fixes here.Get a proven winner who will work his tail off and surround himself with like minded people.
Dave Rose out at BYU
I imagine he can find something pretty quickly if he wants to.

Edit: They are calling it a retirement, so I guess he won't be looking if it's a non-forced retirement.

Honestly I used to think the Pitino idea was nuts, but in today's college basketball landscape, the shady coaches win big. Pearl, Coach K, Cal, Wade, hell even Willard cashed in after being a sleaze bringing SHU back to relevance. Obviously it does not negatively impact recruiting. Recruits care if you can help prepare them to win lots of games and get to the NBA. They don't care if he may or may not have been involved where some day walkers were around the players. Pitino was never charged with anything. Nothing has been proven. Sure maybe the parents will, but we've seen the kids have the say a lot of the time. Despite the media craze that occurs immediately after this stuff like with Pitino, it always...I repeat...always dies down and no one cares anymore after a while. I know we never will hire him, but it's a much more interesting proposition than many give credit for.

Also, have to disagree...Hurley and Oats are not big risks IMO. I'd easily give 10 years to either of those guys vs. anyone else we could realistically hire. If we don't get a top candidate this year, we will all be groaning how we missed out while watching them turn around other programs and we have Tim Cluess or Masiello with more of the same. If we were UConn, Ollie would never be fired because the championship would override any current results. UConn may be down but they aren't always dumb. They knew Hurley was a homerun and they went out to get him. You don't wait to see what coaches are available when one is clearly not working. You make a change and get your guy.

Plenty of restaurants around for Pitino to do his magic!

The question is: Can we lure a ‘home run hire’?
Since this is the ‘2019 Coaching Change thread, What about Bobby Hurley or Nate Oates?
Not ‘home run hires’ but either would cost a few $mill/year each and buying out CM would raise the ante markedly.

Sources: Nebraska has parted ways with Tim Miles.
Per Rothstein

Tim Miles out at Nebraska, according to reports. Now we wait to see if Fred Hoiberg takes the job, and how that impacts a certain St. John's assistant coach. #sjubb

A deal with Fred Hoiberg to be Nebraska's next basketball coach is close to being finalized, 247Sports has been told. If the deal goes through as expected, Nebraska is expected to pay him a salary that would place him along the top-1o coaches in the Big Ten, somewhere north of $3 million. Hoiberg has been in talks with officials connected to the Husker athletics department for at least 2 1/2 weeks.

The Huskers on Tuesday officially announced the firing of Tim Miles after seven seasons and a 116-114 record overall, which included one NCAA appearance his second season. A 4 p.m. press conference with Nebraska athletics director Bill Moos is planned to talk about the news.

i mean how much more does MC need to see? The fan base...."paying fan base" is calling for changes! At least , a figure like Mike Rice as asst. He brings knowledge, recruitment , and past coaching experience to the table not to mention he's an east coast guy.
