2019-20

I seem to be in the minority in that I hope Hoiberg gets the job and takes Matt with him. The thing I find most annoying about the current program is the constant revolving door. Fault for that begins with Mullin, and ends with Mullin. He is the Head Coach. But Matt is the person targeting all of these kids and he is doing an awful job of vetting kids. Kids are coming and going like there is no tomorrow and Matt has shown no ability to attract any recruits out of high school.

I don't see the big risk of bringing in a new individual to head up recruiting. No 2019 high school commits, and if Tabor is actually taking away his commitment there is nobody to lose for 2020. And having Matt around certainly hasn't helped keep kids from leaving the team. Mack isn't even on campus yet and wants to leave. Why are we targeting guys like this over and over again?

I respect that Matt works hard, but this is high level D1 and that is not a high enough bar. And if the program totally disintegrates because he leaves then let's find that out this year. Because if Mullin cannot run this program without him he absolutely has to go too.

Do you think we underachieved this year? Cause I think the roster we (matt) built was good enough to win 25 games.

I have wandered over to a number of message boards of other schools since the tournament started, in particular, teams that lose games. When the teams seasons end threads about 2019-2020 such as these pop up almost immediately. Sometimes fans use it as another thread to complain about the coach, or worry about a star player who is not a senior going off to the NBA. I can't find any where the expectation is that the entire returning roster is in immediate jeopardy, except one. Hello Redmen.com!

What is going on here with bizarre departures (Keita to the NBA!) is much more than part of a new trend, unless the idea is that SJU is on the cutting edge. The idea that fans are worried about the immediate future of a team who made the tournament with only one senior is not only depressing but incredible.

We had not one quality big man. Not one. I don't see how we win on a consistent basis that way. That is on the coaching staff-- all of them, not just Matt.

Wasn’t perfect but it was the most talented team we’ve had in a very long time

No, I don't think it underachieved. Twenty one wins was about right. No size, no bench, we know the issues by now.

Yeah, it's a yearly problem around here.

Angst is high on Redmen.com,
the fate of our Johnnies hangs by a thread.
When Matt leaves to husk corn
will Mully tie his shoes
as MC slices & dices the coaching staff?
Will Fordham & Marillac recruit,
Can Dink & Moose coach?
What about Paultz's senses
& Paul will have to shepherd the drama,
as Monte will want to be a gangsta
or get that major detective role
& Maher will demand more Pale Ales,
while Otis & Knight moderate.
Ponds is gone & likely Mustapha too
Simon leaves for brown & dusty Cali to surf
& our freshmen become sophomores somewhere else,
Trimble stays
but Mack walks on to the Knicks
as Caraher attempts a 3 in the Non-Baptist Big East,
can Steere & Manuel rebound
as Keita becomes NBA ROY
& Figgy is our mainstay
but is Wright to be seen?
Are there a few Grad Transfer we can sell on Jamaica, Queens
as Beast & Bama disagree
& 72 spouts something funny.
While JohnnyFan inveighs on what it all means
NCJohnnie looks for balance
& Adam calculates next year’s NET
as Jack Williams urges Old School to be calm
& Zaun to be nice
while Sherman, Sheridan & Grant
pines for the glories of Union Turnpike
& Mean Gene, Frank61, Farifield & Rawdog gnash & grind
whatever is at hand
but North & Redstorm NC see the big picture
as the whole Board hopes for the best.

Ugh.
Mucho foreboding ‘stuff’ is surfacing.

I certainly agree with Mr Williams. A small gesture but means so much to the kids who did not play. In our case there were 2 players who could have been taken out much earlier and sat for a moment or two. Williams and Roberts could not have done worse than Heron and Clark. Sometimes you just have to think about the future.

Do we really need more evidence that the program is in shambles? Trust the process! (Blank) is the man for the job!

Can’t help thinking what an indictment against the state of the program it would be if Matt were to leave for Nebraska. Matt is a New York guy and a SJU alumn. Nebraska is fat from a top tier program and they are located in Nebraksa!

I understand Matt’s wife is from Iowa and he’s had success with Hoiberg, but the only reason Matt would leave is if he thinks the ship is sinking here. What does that say to recruits if our NY born and bred, SJU alumn assistant jumps ship for Nebraska.

Whether you like Matt or not, his leaving would send an unequivocal message that the program is in trouble under Mullin. Short of a brilliant assistant hire or two, I don’t think Mullin can survive Matt leaving. Not sure Mullin survives more than a year under any circumstances, but I think Matt leaving would be the straw that breaks the camel’s back.

How posting up the follow up answers that Mr. Williams gave? Might not fit the agenda. Even the questions being asked under the tweet are baiting him to throw Mullin under the bus.

Very thoughtful and disturbing post, Boo.
Indeed, it seems a watershed moment for Mullin in the way you’ve cited but also leaves the program desperate, on the cusp of numerous player departures with not one recruiting AC on the Staff at the looming peak of the Spring Signing and Transfer season.
The timing of this could not be worse.
We’ll get through it but I’m bracing for the flood.

Selective Service stopped years ago

Forget the last two minutes, I was stunned Williams didn’t into that game earlier. The team needed a spark and it was worth a shot. The way Williams and Roberts were handled this season was disappointing and Earlington played hard when he was in there as well.
