Totally agree that Cragg should act fast.
Make his staff change preferences known to Chris, get Chris on board, or buy out his deal...if he has a buyout clause.
But does anybody know? Otherwise, it’s silly to keep tossing around coaching alternatives imo.
But I disagree that there are scores of ‘much better jobs out there’ than St. John’s.
Despite antiquated facilities and the dreaded commuter school label, if a new coach can win here the buzz on the guy’s success would resonate far and wide.
Because, if highly successful, we would truly be: New York’s team.
That’s worth beaucoup PR, renown, and ultimately $$$$$$’s.
UCLA
VA Tech will open
LSU and Zona are likely. I don't see LSU sticking with their interim unless and absurd run.
By better job the reasoning is the roster will be bare. That means year 1 is a total wash. And the coach would be replacing a SJU playing legend. I think when and if the job arises we need to recalibrate expectations of the level of coach.

All coaches can be bought out. Just a level of how much remaining. I would like to think Chris wouldn't hold SJU over the table
Gotta atleast call oats up.
If not, maybe grab one of Coach K's assistants, he's been a winniner the last 25+yrs, so they learned from one of the best.
I really don't care who the next coach is, I just want SJU to win, sick of no ncaa wins the last 20 damn years.

Could we be Duke of the NorthEast, if we win then I say WHY NOT???
Gotta forget Oats. He is and will be hottest up and coming name. And there is literally no connection to SJU or NY or anything associated.

The Duke connection makes sense with Cragg. But K's tree isn't exactly the gold standard
if no one of the hot mid major coaches want to coach at SJU, then maybe Jon Scheyer and he's only 31.
247sports ranks him as the #3 recruiter in coll bball and job title is Associate head coach.

If Chris doesn't step down this off season then get Jon next off season.

I concede that I may be delusional, but I still think this can be a great job. What other big jobs that are/will be open would be appealing to Oats? Do up-and-comers really want to be at Alabama?

Does a UCLA go for someone like Oats?

I doubt it. I suspect they will want a "big" name coach and have to money to get one.

Probably really easy to be the No. 3 recruiter in the country when you are selling Duke, and Coach K is closing. I'd be afraid of a Norm situation, although I doubt anyone could ever be that bad.

My thought as well. So of the schools that will be open, is going to a big-time football school the best option if you have to live there? Then again, I'm looking at it from the eyes of a Northeast/Bay Area guy who would rather kill myself than live in Alabama.

Of course, LSU and Arizona could both be enticing. Especially since people at Arizona watched Oats beat their asses.

Not just those jobs. Then the jobs who open as a result of those being filled

Don't think we are changing the head coach for next season.

Cragg and Mullin haven't even met yet.

Good point. I wonder if this is the year Marshall might finally head somewhere else, which would shake things up and open up a plum job investment-wise for someone moving up the coaching ranks.

True, but my position goes to economics. SJU not going to eat $4 Mil. due to CM.

Contrary to popular belief people are willing to assist with that. Just like in the past.

Plus who knows. Mullin loves SJU right? Maybe he's open to a Bonilla type plan. Not that severe but you know what I mean

With Clark graduating, if Ponds, Heron, Simon and Trimble leave, I would feel bad for Figueroa. It could mean that this past year will be the best St. John's team he ever plays on.
Anyone know when Cragg and Mullin are meeting?
Chris meets with staff next week and would assume shortly thereafter.
Chris' meeting with Matt is the only relevant assistant meeting.
If they have it. See what Nebraska does tomorrow night.

Just my own speculation...while it’s natural to want to be close to family, he only has one year left. I would suspect that the family issue is secondary and an easy one to use. If Clark weren’t leaving I don’t think he even considers leaving.

Hope he stays.

This is a good point. Simon is a unique player. In addition to being a superior athlete, his jump shot is an obvious detriment. He will have to choose a new program carefully. He knows he will play big minutes here and I imagine he does not want a repeat of the Arizona experience.

Wish I could reply in the other forum.

I asked again and was told Simon is 100% NOT transferring. Take that to the bank.
