If Mullin changes his staff the 2 most important things to get would be a recruiter and a knowledgeable, competent coach.
I think it depends on roster fallout. If we retain most of our roster, then he might not need to resort to an extreme (Willard's Tiny strategy). If we have significant fallout, then he'd almost certainly need a Hail Mary heading into next year. Good ACs can only do so much in one year with limited talent.

Look at Xavier after Chris Mack left. They did not sink.
What does a school who has lost proven successful coaches to bigger jobs over and over but has also made the right hire over and over again have to do with STJ historically or in the present situation?

Nothing, SJ will always be a loser. Hope that makes you feel better.

No seriously what does one have to do with the other. Take out the histories, take out their track records, what does one coach leaving a successful program for a top 10 job have to do with Mullin's situation?

Posters are being too pessimistic in evaluating SJU's chances of hiring a competent head or ass't coach(es). The college coaching fraternity operates like a food chain with hundreds of coaches looking to move up the chain to a league like the big east.
I would also expect Cragg would have some coaches in mind. The key is selecting a good one.

As I've said before this is the only thing that gives me hope.

My point is a program does not have to sink into despair when a new coach is hired. Xavier was pretty barrren when Mack left and they got better and better as the season wore on and should be very competitive next year. We don’t have to assume 5 years of losing if a new coach is hired. Also, you only cut out one sentence of my previous post so it is slightly out of context.

Agreed. But even if they hired a new coach and took a step back that wouldn't be the end of the world as long as the new coach had a staff and plan in place to get better.

But if your point is hiring a new coach does not automatically mean a 5 year rebuild I agree.
The forum is a complete cesspool right now. Some of you would be better served walking away for a bit and taking a break. I took my son camping for 4 days and left the phone off 90% of the time. It was nice. It’s just amateur sports, guys.

Mullin did enough to be retained. Seeking his removal after we just completed what is objectively one of the best four seasons we had his century is a waste of time. It’s not happening.

Matt A hasn’t gone anywhere yet. Even if he bolts, so what? The roster he assembled isn’t exactly murderer’s row. And he contributes nothing to the coaching. He swung and missed badly on Keita and Dixon and he hasn’t finished off a roster well once.

He better understand that Nebraska is a pit stop before Iowa St. so he’s prepared to either move twice or be left on the dust in Lincoln with his history as a sh*t stirrer.

I’m far from thrilled with Mullin and I think we might be better off if he stepped down and we actually made a decent hire for once. But it’s his call. This constant negativity does nothing but cannibalize our own program.
Agree on almost everything there. I'd add that our beat writers play into the madness of the fanbase, publishing one rage bait article after another. Even Phil Mushnick got into after SJU finished, kicking us while down.

These forums cant make it easy on a player, either. Or a coach.

Agree. But with SJU being the absolute worst over decade after decade of making bad hiring decisions, nobody here trusts that. I agree that my only hope here is Cragg. He’s the most important member of the team right now.

Imagine that the SJU brass was given an ultimatum by the Big East to even hire Cragg. It’s almost like Child Protective Servces had to be called on the people at SJU for us to do the right thing and not harm ourselves. At this point we have been deemed incompetent to make our own decisions. That’s nothing like Xavier who always makes the right hires and have been fantastic for decades, even though a few short years ago were considered a mid-major.

I agree that most of SJs decisions have been awful, but there was a time when Uconn was perennial cellar dwellers and SJ was king. One good decision can change everything and we are long overdue for some good luck. Fans are starving for a good team and the stink of this year is still on us. Let’s let things play out and hope for the best rather than assume the worst. I would not be surprised to see Matt leave and we end up in a tailspin but I am hoping some smart decisions and good luck find there way to our team. I went to SJ in the golden era of of the 80s so I know what good feels like but unfortunately the last 20 years have been a train wreck.

I’m gonna need proof that the Big East “Forced” SJU to hire somebody Ike Cragg. That doesn’t sound believable to me.

Not advocating for Matt to leave nor do I want him to leave but if it were to happen it immediately frees up enough funds to pay for two good assistant Coaches. Whether they be recruiters or x and o guys, I am not the one who determines what is needed. Whoever they are it would put the coaching staff in a better position going forward. Perhaps one step back and 2 forward.
Point is everything is not all doom and gloom as it is made out to be on this board.

It's not true

Just heard that the Big East was influential in our hiring of an A.D. FWIW, I’m happy about it either way. We haven’t had one since manetta.

The Big East made us get a full-time AD — as it should have. You may be conflating that with forcing us to hire a specific person.

We’ve had several runs with no legit AD over the last 25 years. It’s so bizarre and it really speaks to how inept the school can be at times.

I understood what your point was and you're welcome to have and support that opinion. I only pointed out this quote because in any context comparing the two situations was patently ridiculous. Don't really have a problem with the other positions you have taken up.

Goff was a full time AD. However he was nowhere near cut out to be an AD at a major D1 school and it quickly showed
