2019-20
Maybe it's just me, but if Matt does leave why do so many posters think that all of a sudden all these players will leave too? Matt sells the reasons to come play in NYC at SJU. Plus since his recruits are typically transfers it's not like he's built these long term relationships with them like you do with high school kids. Matt's like a silver tongued used car salesman. He's good at selling a product to you quickly. Just my opinion on it. That's why I don't think next year will be that bad IF most guys stay and IF we bring in a seasoned assistant coach.
If he does leave, I expect some fallout, but of course not to a devastating level. As stated, I just think the roster will look different than the one on paper for next season and less promising than the 18-19 squad. Hope to be wrong on that & they surprise.

If Matt leaves, of course the program survives. In the short term with his exit, our dependence on one recruiter may hurt with the Spring signing period and transfer search. Beyond that my hope is the often expressed desire for two recruiters to put SJU in a less dependent position. Perhaps we can also rely less on transfers and balance scales better with high school kids.

Does anyone else notice this game?

Situation A: We are having a good season and things are going well. Tons of people donate, record sales, we eat breath and sleep SJ hoops!

Situation B: We are vastly underachieving and failing. Things are not going well. Oh well, it's just a stupid game that started with a peach basket. It's just a game that doesn't matter.

Can we at least be consistent? If you are posting on this forum, you're already in the top 5% of SJ fans and I'd consider everyone here a diehard, even those I don't agree with. My point is, we all obviously care a lot and we all obviously know it's more than a "silly game". This isn't D3 in some basement. This is the Big East on FOX national TV with millions and millions of dollars at stake, major donors who are in some of the most successful businesses, and our home court is THE Madison Square Garden in the center of the universe. This is not to say sports are everything obviously. There are much more important things in life. But instead of pretending like we don't care when we suck, can we at least admit it's a pretty big thing in our lives? Look how much money is involved in major college hoops. That right there completely counters the argument that "it's just a dumb game". Just sick of people using Situation B as a means to excuse lowering standards. IMO the standards should never be lowered.

Okay you got me I will bite again. It’s not just you, a bunch of posters keep lamenting the lowering of expectations. Who the hell do you think you are? College basketball is entertainment, that’s it. Just like a movie. Some people will only go see a movie if it fantastic, some people enjoy just about any movie. Same with this, it’s a personal choice.

I have two words for anyone who tells me what should make me happy. Worry about yourself and stop lecturing the rest of us.

Mike, your duality is really not accurate. Your Sit. B is inaccurate because I do not believe anyone reverts to an indifferent attitude. Some temper their disappointment with the realization that this is just college basketball and refrain form the most caustic criticism of the school, program, players, coaches etc. Others can't restrain themselves, and that's where the line is drawn.

Wow, how many times are you going to keep saying the same thing. Redundancy is extremely annoying. Most on here would agree that the season was disappointing. However, to continue to use every single post to say the same thing over and over is ridiculous.

I was optimistic about this season but things did not work out the way I would have liked. So yes, I am disappointed but life goes on. None of us have any control over what happens next, so to continually belabor the point of players, recruits, or coaches seems ridiculous. In reality, all we can do is sit back and see what happens. As for myself, I will continue to root for St. Johns the same as I have over the last 60 years.

Also please remember, there is a difference between caring and obsession. I care about St Johns basketball, however I also understand that ranting and raving on Redmen.com ain't gonna change shit.

Let's go REDMEN.

I guess the “letting it play out” meant for one day? One hour? One minute?

the mention of the "TMC" reunion here is sickening! Its like Jay Bilas and his throwback thursdays when he shows everyone on social media his loveliest for HIMSELF! This is NOT about TMC, this is about the St Johns Red Storm (redmen) Basketball Team! Stop with all your glory days and glory stories, these kids are here to learn, develop, and WIN! They are not here for more of your look at us tour. Go back to Cali where people actually care. NYers want a winner again in the Garden. The fans showed it this year with their attendance and the city showed it when the storm was actually ranked (for a measly week). Move on MC, get us a staff here that wants to be HERE, and wants to win HERE!!!

For being accused so often of being Mikey Two Times, the irony is that many posters are repeating themselves in criticizing my repetition. But wait, does that make it repetitive that I critiqued it? It's not the repetition it's the POV you don't like. Let's be honest here. It's funny, whenever I meet people in person from the site, literally every time the first thing they say when I tell them I'm Zaun is, "Oh god haha that's you?! Dude I'll be honest, you take so much crap on that forum". So before you say "oh he's trying to play victim again", just know many others notice this. Bottom line is that if you don't have the "correct" opinion on here, you will have a target on your back unfortunately. I'm sorry, I'll accept a CBI every 5 years as our ceiling...don't want to come off obsessed!

Calling bullshit. Again. Nobody is telling you what to accept. Do what you want but stop telling us what is acceptable for us. What gives you that right?

A lot of back and forth going on, but little about next season. Coaches, recruiting, players, schedule, facilities, etc. Why so much animosity? Rhetorically posed.

Talking about next season = animosity.

Pretty simple equation

I don't think kids leave because of Matt. I think kids leave because Mullin has no clue how to substitute them in for players who are having horrible games, players who are leaving anyway.

A common theme on fixing all the ills of the SJU program is to hire an experienced ass't. I have posted that solution myself a number of times in the past couple of months and just today realized it probably wouldn't mean a thing. No one is going to tell Mullin what to do. The first sign of that was the fiasco with Slice.
When Mullin was hired SJU had a history of powerless AD's. That changed with the hiring of Cragg who has gone out of his way to publicly say he is going to do everything he can to help Mullin elevate the SJU program time after time. I have not seen any mention of Cragg by Mullin since his hire. I'm sure Mullin feels he doesn't need the help and if Cragg demands a change in staff Mullin will just ignore them. It appears to be that gifted player who can't coach who complicates everything because he doesn't feel he has to work like other coaches to be successful but also doesn't like to take advice.
I posted yesterday how I always felt SJU missed out because the timing was never right in hiring Al McGuire. Al recognized his limitations and hired strong ass'ts and took their advise.
I'm afraid Cragg has a disaster facing him.

Well, there was that one article where Mullin was asked about Cragg and he made a weird face.

"Tons of people" didn't come out to support this year's team because Chris Mullin was the head coach. That may have been the case in his first or even second year, but fans got behind this year's team because we all thought this was going to be a huge turnaround year: an NCAA bid and maybe even a BE title. But as losses built up and the team's play deteriorated, having an iconic figure as head coach meant less and less. Consistency? What fans want is a consistent winner and a solid program far more than they want an AA/HOF head coach -- however beloved -- with questionable coaching skills and poor judgment, a HC whose assistants -- especially one famous one -- leave a lot to be desired and one who's indefensibly overworked.

Mike Z, failure is an orphan, success has a thousand parents, just human nature. Right now this thread feels like a mob working itself up for a lynching.
