Our coaches talking about the NBA and how great things were 25-30 years ago while others are out recruiting for their COLLEGE basketball team. If there was ever another shred of evidence to show that Mullin and Mitch just don't seem to give a crap or take their jobs too seriously, it's this. We are paying legit coach money for no show coaches. It's that simple. It's a paycheck to them. As a program, Mullin has pushed every wrong button he possibly could right up until now. He's literally doing the polar opposite of what it takes to be a successful coach.
I would love to know what Mike Cragg thinks about this.
One last thing on transfer and strategy. I am still not 100% convinced on Ewing yet.

But his strategy is good. Again overwhelmingly building with solid 3-4 star kids and trying to go after the occasional stud, Cole Anthony. And oh when goes after a transfer, a very productive high major kid named Omer Yurevsten, not a lot of risk with that kid. Now he has to win so we'll see. But that is where SJU needed to be LAST year let alone THIS year....
Honestly, I don’t think that Mullin nor Ewing are real good coaches. Difference is that Ewing sees more value in big guys and a balanced game plan and has hired a very good and complete staff. I’ve watched Ewing in huddles and he’s not the sharpest coach by a long margin. His staff with Orr and others is good though and it will carry him further by far. We missed that mark and it’s too late to correct it. The fans and recruits already can see the gaping holes here.

All of this leading to the same conclusion. Mullin has to go.. SJU isn’t no on a low note with some talent in place. Move this thing along with a top notch coach and try to keep this roster together a bit. Our fan support at msg was amazing this year in terms of numbers. Hungry fan base. Don’t let that momentum die. Cut any losses and move on.
It’s only up to mullin. If he chose to leave I wouldn’t be upset about it but there’s no way he’s getting fired. And he shouldn’t be.
I hate to pile on Mullin. He is, after all, along with Louie, the face of our program. But his tenure has been very shaky, to say the least. Just imagine where this year's team would've been if Heron, who had fallen into his lap at the last moment, and Figueroa weren't granted immediate eligibility. Sorry to say -- and sad to say -- it's time for a change.
I have to agree with you. The “shouldn’t be” comment is confusing, must be based on increase wins. However, this team underperformed this year plain and simple. If there are some major shakeups on the staff then I would be ok on the wait and see approach. But if the staff remains the same, he needs to step down.
I’m putting my feelings as Mullin the coach aside. He inherited shit and in his 4th year he made the tourney. Add to the fact he’s the face of the program and firing him would be crazy. Again I wouldn’t be upset if he decided to leave but asking for him to be fired is asking for something that will not happen.
If he was just a normal coach and not the face of the program what would you like to happen, especially if the staff remain in tact or replace one person (Matt)?

Most people thought this hire would backfire and then we would face the difficult decision on what to do. This is why IMO I wished he was never hired.
Mullin is the only person in the world St. John’s was going to hire without ever coaching before. That’s why it’s different. Doesn’t mean it was right. They didn’t hire him because they thought he was was a good coach, they hired him because they thought he could become one.

I’m not defending the hire. I’m not defending him as a coach. But as a program, firing the guy 4 years in after knowing it wasn’t gonna be a quick turnaround and he’s proven he can at the very least get St. John’s to the tourney would be craaaazier than an opposing foothills council student section when JG3 is in town.
Majority of the people here know he won’t get fired, he will leave on his own terms. To me that’s the first reason why he shouldn’t have been hired.

At the press conference he sold me probably just like he sold SJU at the interview, but what we know now it was all talk. How many gyms has he visited? The staff makeup has been terrible. When will we have our first year where there isn’t any major concerns or issues? The hard working coaching staffs don’t just put the balls away and leave after the last game. This job has very little breaks, you can’t give 50% effort. If he can’t put in the effort like majority of coaches then he needs to step aside. You know all of this and you also know SJU is basically the only school in the Big East that goes through this crap every year. When do you say enough is enough?

I actually think this is a good sign. Maybe CM, and Coach Mitch can now use video chat to talk to recruits since they can't be bothered to attend their games.

In all seriousness though this is bad optics. To do this while other coaches including some in our conference are already scouring the transfer market. Just dumbfounded.
This is laughable.
The Board is up to its collective eyeballs in angst while simultaneously foaming at its collective mouth fearing the worst about roster turnover (upheaval?) and having nightmares about bringing Louie back to recruit and Chris & Mitch are waxing poetic about the ‘glory days’ of the RUNTMC Warriors.
Unbelievable.
The "glory days" that didn't include an NBA title or a finals series.

Sounds like a coaching/recruiting Dream Team.

Funny thing is, I think they would be, IF they got off their butts and recruited!
Lol.

I'll take the opposite argument on the twitter thing or vid thing or whatever it is. Frustration and angst run deep with all of us ( definitely not looking forward to any threads on April 1 ) but Mullin doing a twitter thing or video thing with just himself or with Mitch and Tim talking about NBA isnt a bad thing at all. I definitely want to see more recruiting but the reality is the thing he did didnt exactly take weeks to prepare for or prevented him from recruiting. It certainly cant hurt recruiting and exposure.

I was dense, Dink.
I had blind faith in our Legend.
Oh well.

No problem, Chicago Days.... It happens! I wanted to believe, but my eyes (and ears) kept telling me something differently.

The board is just a reflection on the state of the program. Tons of enthusiasm when Mullin was hired, despite all the posters who now say they were against it. Just 4 years later the supporters are few if any. Not an ounce of good news once the season ended. Other programs making changes already. The only chatter here is speculating which players and coaches will leave. The Recruiting Trail more like a dead end to nowhere. They could use this program as the basis of an episode of The Twilight Zone.

The forum is a complete cesspool right now. Some of you would be better served walking away for a bit and taking a break. I took my son camping for 4 days and left the phone off 90% of the time. It was nice. It’s just amateur sports, guys.

Mullin did enough to be retained. Seeking his removal after we just completed what is objectively one of the best four seasons we had his century is a waste of time. It’s not happening.

Matt A hasn’t gone anywhere yet. Even if he bolts, so what? The roster he assembled isn’t exactly murderer’s row. And he contributes nothing to the coaching. He swung and missed badly on Keita and Dixon and he hasn’t finished off a roster well once.

He better understand that Nebraska is a pit stop before Iowa St. so he’s prepared to either move twice or be left on the dust in Lincoln with his history as a sh*t stirrer.

I’m far from thrilled with Mullin and I think we might be better off if he stepped down and we actually made a decent hire for once. But it’s his call. This constant negativity does nothing but cannibalize our own program.

No. The board is just a reflection of a very vocal minority of fans that take it too seriously. Twitter and instagram are even worse, but it is less than 1% of fans.

You may be right, Mike but the visuals sure ain’t good.
Five minutes away from focus on the program at this time of impending crisis is too much imo.
But whatever, it is what it is at this point.

You are the Mt. Rushmore of hypocrites. Since you and others tried to create a real cesspool by doing nothing but trash and root against SJU, its coach and the management more than a decade ago. To the point where you went to a different board and continued it after you were kicked off this board. And you didn't wait 4 years to do it. And I have the posts to prove it.

Your shame and hypocrisy knows no bounds.

You have zero credibility with being a board policeman. Zero, none.

Oh I'd love to know what Louie thinks about this.
I remember Lou saying: "With Chris now coaching here, the days of coaches taking this job for a vacation are over."
Lou must be heart broken, and that really pisses me off. He deserves to see a good SJU team before his time is up.

But it seems that Chris could really give a blank.

I was 21 when Roberts was hired, as I’ve said repeatedly. If he was here now I’d just walk away. It’s just college athletics.

I’m very hurt by you not thinking my anonymous handle doesn’t make a good board policeman. I guess I’ll just have to worry about real life and things that actually matter.

Tim Hardaway is being asked if he wants to replace Matt. They will officially have a TMCG staff...
Yikes that would be bad. Tim was a good player, but a terrible person. His comments concerning the LGBTQ community are unforgivable in my opinion. We have enough negative recruiting going on with opposing staffs telling recruits Mullin can't coach his way out of a paper bag. Last thing we need is them telling recruits one of our assistants is a known homophobe. Also if he's anything like his two buddies already on the staff he won't want to do squat. But hey they'd have epic games of HORSE to keep us entertained while our team is occupying the basement of the Big East for years to come...

Maybe it's just me, but if Matt does leave why do so many posters think that all of a sudden all these players will leave too? Matt sells the reasons to come play in NYC at SJU. Plus since his recruits are typically transfers it's not like he's built these long term relationships with them like you do with high school kids. Matt's like a silver tongued used car salesman. He's good at selling a product to you quickly. Just my opinion on it. That's why I don't think next year will be that bad IF most guys stay and IF we bring in a seasoned assistant coach.
