Agreed about waiting to see how it all plays out. But I don't blame the board for being a bit crazy after the past 4 years under CM. We as a fanbase packed MSG and Carnesecca supporting this team, especially this year, only to see our head coach seemingly mailing it in with an unbalanced inept coaching staff, putting in no effort recruiting, and not getting any better as an in-game coach.

I think most of us expect a change to be made one way or the other. Anything else is unacceptable in my opinion. This is not how a good program is ran, and it's so obvious to everyone, even someone who just saw us play one game the entire season vs. ASU last week. I for one will definitely not be renewing my season tickets if the status quo is kept next season.

I went to a lot of games during every season of Mullin's first 4 years. That includes years 1 and 2 when even the NIT was out of reach. That's because I wanted to support Mullin and felt like we had a bright future. The close loss vs Seton Hall during our 1-17 year was reassuring, simply because we weren't blown out. That is how low my standards have been.

Needless to say, the honeymoon is now over. Mullin needs to acknowledge that AC changes are necessary. If the staff doesn't change and we underachieve at the start of next year, then I won't be purchasing tickets. I won't sit through losing seasons again under the current staff.

I'm posting this assuming Mullin is returning. If Mullin feels that hiring Rice could help solve the recruiting and X's and O's deficiencies currently infecting the program I hope the powers to be at SJU would not stand in his way.

I'm not as connected as some posters are on here, but I believe the general feeling has been just the opposite re: Rice.

University is more then willing to bring him on, but Mullin has remained steadfastly loyal to his staff.

If this is true, how can anyone continue to support CM? Virtually anyone looking at this program would come to the conclusion that the staff is inadequate.

I fully supported hiring Chris Mullin.
I was mistaken.
I think it’s another mistake, but I support CM returning IF he fully revamps his staff which, at this point, looks like replacing all 3 ACs.
I do not support Mully returning if he just replaces the likely departing Matt.
It’s time to recognize that our great legacy player is a poor coach and the AD should, at the very least, pressure him to gut his entire Staff.
The turning point for me has been the Matt dilemma.
No competent boss would ever allow himself to be in a position, where 1 departure threatens the near-term viability of his domain.
CM has.
I’ve had enough.

At what point does steadfast loyalty degrade into blind stubbornness?

It’s best to come up with some amicable divorce agreement contractually with Mullin for a split. It’s only starting to get ugly now. I don’t think there’s any winning this one for Mullin the longer he stays. Let him go on a high note after an NCAA appearance. SJU fans will be happy for his service to the University and SJU basketball for trying to breath life into his alma mater and all will be happy. He stays on and stays lame duck with a new staff to start from scratch, it’s only going to go badly I’m positive about it.

I saw from the awesome fan support at the Garden that this program has more life’s in it than I thought, waiting to take off. Mullin helped bring that fan base back. Now need to get a real good coach and recruiter in to take advantage of that.

Marcus, I’ve always found you to be one of the most reasonable posters we have here. And your comments in this case support that. I’ve been worried about legacy tarnish since CM took the job. But I’ve long maintained that he should be afforded the respect to allow him to decide when it’s time to go.

Maybe I’m naive to think he’d voluntarily forego the remaining 4 mil on his contract but I still believe he would opt to “retire” if he thought he’d maxed out.

I still feel that way and hope whatever he decides it proves beneficial to the program. If he stays he MUST bolster the staff. Even if Matt stays.

Jim Calhoun quote on the commitment by tiny St.Joe’s College in West Hartford at his new job: St Joe’s doing 14-18mil in renovation.

“I said that about building a legacy to sustain,” Calhoun said. “When I'm not coaching here in two, three [years], whatever it may be, I want St. Joe's to sustain excellence. Greatness is determined by what kind of kids you get, the way the program is run and by the support you get from the university.”

If SJU can’t figure out how to navigate 2 years of Mullin’s contract and go hire a good coach, we will never ever see sustained success. Jim Calhoun, a guy I couldn’t stand when he was coaching, but he’s 100% right. Time to commit to excellence.

Thank you. I wasn’t always as reasonable but fan is short for “fanatic” and I’ve grown more reasonable. I just can’t wait to win any more. I’m getting old watching us lose for decades.

My concern is that this past year is the best it will get. I'd be shocked if Matt doesn't leave and I'm expecting a mass exodus.

We need two recruiters, preferably at least one of them with X's and O's acumen. I unfortunately don't trust Mullin to make the correct hires.

I think the money can be found for a "mutual" parting. I'm just not sure the political will exists outside of Cragg, so don't want to get my hopes up.

I can live with a Mullin/ex-coach like Rice (but know it won't be him)/Rasheen Davis/GSJ combo for next year. But Mullin/Richmond/GSJ/Tim Hardaway next season looks like a seven-man roster to me. And a pathetic win total.

I know posters are hoping Heron returns. I don't think he does unless Mullin is back in Danville, Calif.
The best we can get? We had a 6’7 jump shooter playing center. We didn’t have a PF or C that could rebound or defend bigs. We didn’t have a capable second ball-handler. We didn’t have great individual defenders.

Surely we can improve by closing some of those gaping holes.

I actually think this is a good sign. Maybe CM, and Coach Mitch can now use video chat to talk to recruits since they can't be bothered to attend their games.

In all seriousness though this is bad optics. To do this while other coaches including some in our conference are already scouring the transfer market. Just dumbfounded.
Par for the course.

I liked it better when I thought Chris might be hunkered down and feverishly working on the team, recruiting, and his staff. Apparently he has time on his hands. Never any urgency with Chris. Guess the guy won't get an ulcer.

And yet according to you repeated several times SJU was set to make a UCONN 2011 like run to the Final Four. Especially if they matched up with overrated Virginia right?
