19-20 Transfers

I don't buy the "there are not many" line. Look at most teams, even mid majors, and they have bigger guys than we have had of recent years. There are plenty of 6'8 and 6'10 ++ guys out there. IMHO, it is more about recruiting style, effort and priorities.

Sure there are plenty of teams, including mid and low majors who have big guys. Question is how many of those guys are effective and how many of them are walking foul prone, ineffective plodders, and do we need big guys just for the sake of having height?

We have our fill of tweener forwards for right now. Really need either a wing scorer or a decent sized PF/C.
How many 6’11” bangers has MA had historically? The system doesn’t strike me a plodding big man system.
He had Bobby Portis (6'11), Daniel Gafford (6'11), and Moses Kingsley (6'10) at Arkansas. All 3 were all SEC players, Portis and Gafford both drafted and currently in NBA and Kingsley was Pre-season SEC POY heading into his senior year.

So yea, the system definitely can work with those type of big men. With that said, there were some times in Gafford's last year I thought the team look better playing smaller and faster rather than always trying to force it in to him, same thing with Kingsley's senior year, he wasn't used as much his last year because we had great guards like Barford and Macon and when they controller the ball and scoring the offense looked more fluid.

I think the perfect big man for his system is a big like Portis.... Portis plays stretch 4 in the NBA, he didn't play traditional big man role for Arkansas either, he was more of a mid-range, clean-up, and can shoot the 3 if needed type of player at Arkansas. He did a little bit of everything, which made him so good, he didn't just sit in the paint and bang. I guess you could think of Isiah Moore with 35 more pounds on him and better footwork.

Sign me up for Bobby Portis style big man all day long, but he was a top 20 recruit. There aren’t many 6’10 230lb skilled big men out there.

All three mentioned were top 50 recruits. If MA can get that caliber big man here go for it.

When Bobby Portis started his sophomore year at Arkansas he was 6'11 245 if I remember correctly according to the razorbacks website, not sure how he lost an inch moving to the NBA lol, as ESPN has him listed as 6'10, 250 right now. You never know with those heights some are inflated.

But yes, all 3 of those guys were top 50 recruits and had local ties. Portis and Gafford homegrown, and Kingsley was Portis' best friend and played for Arkansas Wings AAU organization.

It's going to take CMA longer at St.John's to land a big man of that caliber, as it's way more competitive to land the in-state talent with other quality D1 programs in the NY/NJ area so close together, and it's different in Arkansas, all there is, is Razorbacks, there's no other major sports organizations, so kids like Portis and Gafford grow up and that's all they hear about.

Syracuse transfer Jalen Carey has committed to Rhode Island, per his Instagram page.

Former Top 50 recruit.

Former Fairfield player also;

Former Cal Baptist guard Ferron Flavors, who committed to Oklahoma State earlier this summer as a grad transfer, told me he'll stick with his commitment despite the 1-year postseason ban the NCAA hit the program with Friday. Flavors averaged 13.5 ppg.

Sources: Duke, Gonzaga, and USC have all emerged as leading candidates to land Florida transfer Andrew Nembhard.

59% FG shooter and did you see the bulk on his 6'8 frame?
