19-20 Transfers

The way things are going, there might not be a season for LJ to return for. (Guess I'm back on the ledge again.)
Is one real PG and two combos safe enough to get us through what should be a good next season if McGriff leaves?

What if he leaves and Posh gets injured? A promising next season might take a big hit.

Tough situation all around, because even if Caraher never scored another point, I'd still want him around. He lost like 30 pounds trying to get in shape for the new style of play. I'd ask him to be team captain before asking him to leave.

And having LJ is certainly better than not having him.

I think Caraher has a 4.0. Maybe get creative with academic scholarship, although he'd have to pay for his own team meals.
Doubt you can do this and have him not count as a scholarship player otherwise this would be done all the time. I know in football if you have any type of recruiting contact with a respective recruit you cannot even accept that player as a walk-on he would still be counted as a scholarship player even if he pays his own way.

It's ridiculous that a walk-on paying their own way would count as a scholarship. Is that the rule in basketball, though? I don't know many examples off the top of my head, but Jack Trotter came into Stanford as a "preferred walk-on." I know they had contact. He didn't just show up in the coach's office out of the blue after enrolling and say, "I'm 6'9" and want to join the team."

This is one example I can remember. I don’t know if the grad school aspect plays a part

According to USA Today, neither a preferred walk-on nor a recruited walk-on are on an athletic scholarship. They can earn one but are not counted as such while classified as walk-ons.
No clue if getting an academic scholarship in place of the athletic scholarship violates any rules.

Hey Gabelmc .... how many games have you seen McGriff play in to support your opinion ?
the fact that he was recruited by Anderson and wants to stay, is good enough for me. whether he is better or worse than Perez, is besides the point. we can all watch videos and form our own opinions as to respect. only Anderson's matter.

He was recruited by CMA when we had no point guard on the roster. Then we got Rutherford who had as good a season as we could have hoped for. Then Dunn, while not a pure point transferred in and got eligible. Then we got Posh a 4 star recruit. Then McGriff required surgery and lost out on the season when he could have gotten some pt. Next season McGriff is buried real deep behind Dunn and Posh. He would be very lucky to get 5 minutes a game. While rankings are not the end all and be all he is barely 5 9 and is probably the lowest ranked player on the team. At the guard position we have Dunn, Posh, Williams, Cole and Wusu all ahead of him, with Dunn the only player who will graduate in 2021. If we don’t recruit another guard next year he will still be fifth on the depth chart in 2021. If he wants pt we are just not the place for him. Those are the hard and cold facts. If he doesn’t mind very little pt for the next four years great. But if he wishes to get on the court during game time any time soon I strongly suggest he look elsewhere.

I understand why a rule would be in place. Otherwise, schools would put kids with a 2.0 on scholarship to bring in another star player. Caraher's grades would be pretty verifiable, though. But I guess if you are LSU or UNC or Arizona, you might be able to have tutors taking classes for someone.

you may be right, and you are making assumptions that Williams, Cole and Wusu can play point guard. Can McGriff give us a better 10 minutes a game at the point vs. Dunn, would be my question? Earlington and Caraher were being written off by many at this time last year and Steere being hyped. so who knows?

If McGriff decides to leave on his own, I am fine with that. If he chooses to stay and fight for playing time I am fine with that also. One thing I learned from watching last year's team is that no one player is irreplaceable. When Heron went down last year, some thought it was the beginning of the end but it was not because other players stepped up. I could never advocate for pushing a young man out who has not done anything wrong and seems like he has bought into Coach Anderson's program. He committed to St Johns when we did not have anyone so to say that we have better players and we don't need you anymore seems rather cold.

As for Jose Perez, he is a decent player. Will he be able to adjust to Coach Anderson's system where minutes are not guaranteed? He was the focus at Gardner Webb where he had the green light. Were his lower shooting percentages this past season a reflection of his taking bad shots because he knew he would not come out of the game. None of us really know the answer to these questions.

Coach Anderson has demonstrated that he can play with the hand he is dealt. If we enter the season with the roster we presently have, I am ok with that. The Grass Ain't Always Greener!!!

1. Agree that I don't advocate pushing anyone out the door if they are good citizens, have followed the rules and bought in. If they see the writing on the wall, I respect that they might look elsewhere. Some credit must be give to those who came here when we had nothing (tho of course, for some, we were far and away their best option at that point as well).

2. I don't quite get the Caraher love. Yeah he plays hard and seems like a good kid. I have no animosity toward him, just don't see him as a player who should get a lot of minutes at this level. He made a lot of boneheaded plays and TOs and is NOT the shooter he was billed to be. So, if he chose to look elsewhere, which I understand is doubtful, that would not bother me, and would be a good development for the team's options.

3. Still would like to see another big recruited especially with all the cited depth in the backcourt.

Your point re Perez minutes not being guaranteed on a deep team is spot on. Most of these transfers desire prime time and don’t think CMA will guarantee anything in this case.

Honest question- has anyone seen McGriff play in practice prior to or after injury (is he even back playing?)

Are most putting him behind the likes of Posh/Wusu/Dunn etc based on rankings.... or evidence of play?

From my perspective it makes no sense to speculate on either McGriff leaving or whether or not he is good enough to warrant playing time. He was recruited here by Coach Mike Anderson and his staff and that is good enough for me.

Last year there was a ton of speculation about Earlington leaving and not being a Big East caliber player and in both cases that turned out to be completely incorrect. Additionally we recruited a grad transfer point guard from the lowly MAAC who averaged just 5 points a game and shot 37% from the field and yet Nick Rutherford turned out to be the heart and soul of our team.

MGriff was on the bench last year because he was unable to play due to injury. Watching him at games he seemed both engaged and passionate. From watching videos he seems to be both very quick and have point guard skills. The coaches will figure out how he best fits in and how much he plays. Based on seeing this staff operate last year I am confident that McGriff will have a role and he will bring his best to fill it. One thing for sure is that this staff finds ways to get players to buy in and play hard. I am sure this will be the case with Mr. McGriff. Personally I can't wait to see him play.

Agree. I think this kid thinks he can be the starting pg and is going to compete to get that job. Looking forward to seeing what he can do.

Just watched videos of Mc Griff, he looks like the real deaj . .He should see a good amount of playing time and would really be an exciting player in MSG .

BYU’s Mark Pope and staff just completed their virtual tour with Gardner-Webb transfer Jose Perez, he told @Stockrisers.

Perez has the Cougars on his list of ten finalists.
